Indexicals in Virtual Environments  [PDF]
Bernardo Alonso
Open Journal of Philosophy (OJPP) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ojpp.2014.42018

In this paper I explored three well-known cases that seem to cast doubt on the notion that a speaker is always at the place of the utterance when the utterance occurs. I gave a few examples produced in Second Life environment, which cannot be handled correctly by evaluating the expression at issue with respect to the traditional view, i.e., the kaplanian framework—where the agent and the utterer will always be identical, and the referent of “I” will always be the utterer. The same happens to “here” and “now”; in each case the character of the indexical is a function from a contextual parameter to the referent of the expression. An example of logical truth peculiar to indexicals is the sentence “I am here now”, since, according to that view, no utterance can take place in a context whose agent is not in its location in its time. Finally I concluded by claiming that particular kinds of utterances produced in virtual environments (VE) break with the logical truth status of “I am here now”.

?Cuál es el rol del sistema neurohormonal en la insuficiencia cardíaca con fracción de eyección preservada?
Alonso,Enrique; Alonso,Enrique;
Insuficiencia card?-aca , 2010,
Abstract: the role of neurohormonal system (nhs) in the pathophysiology of systolic heart failure (shf) is transcendental. however, their participation in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (hfpef) is not fully clear, since the data is provided from observational studies in patients with shf. small studies have shown that the degree of activation of snh in the hfpef is lower than in the shf. experimental models of hypertensive heart disease showed the active involvement of nhs in the progression of cardiac hypertrophy to shf. increased blood levels of pro-bnp and bnp reflect structural and hemodynamic alterations in patients with hfpef that facilitate early identification of subclinical abnormalities. the probe-hf study showed that type ii diabetic or hypertensive patients with blood dosages of pro-bnp > 125pg/ ml identify a particular group of patients which leads us to request routine tests to acquire functional and structural information about ventricular dysfunction, in order to indicate prematurely the appropriate therapeutic measures.

El contexto de una carta: la conflictiva relación de dos filósofos católicos
Alonso, Jorge;
Diánoia , 2007,
Abstract: this paper provides a context for the letter sent by the french philosopher gabriel marcel to paulette dieterlen, in which he expresses the disruption of his relation to his fellow philosopher jacques maritain. it also explores the common elements in marcel's and maritain's thought, summarizes their contributions and analyzes their differences. it concludes with some clues that might explain why these two catholic thinkers remained estranged, even though the death of maritain's wife could have provided an opportunity for their reconciliation.
Total inexperiencia
ARQ (Santiago) , 2002, DOI: 10.4067/S0717-69962002005200017
Abstract: starting from the current split of the different artistic disciplines, and the later attempts to regroup them into a total art, alonso proposes a link between that totality and the city. if, for the situationists, the city is the ultimate staging of man's life -and, as such, the ideal frame for this integration-, then urbanism, architecture, and the citizen's everyday lived experience must assume together a new kind of commitment
Arrivistas e decadentes: o debate político-intelectual Brasileiro na primeira década republicana
Alonso, Angela;
Novos Estudos - CEBRAP , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-33002009000300006
Abstract: this article takes the political conflict over the overthrow of the brazilian empire as key to understand the intellectual production of the first decade of the republic. i argue that the intellectual debate at the time was genuinely a political one, opposing two relational identities: "monarchists de plume", i. e. ex-aristocrats, converted into knights of the defeated regime, and jacobins, members of ascending social groups, working out the destruction of the former status quo symbols and the legitimization of the new ones.
O abolicionista cosmopolita: Joaquim Nabuco e a rede abolicionista transnacional
Alonso, Angela;
Novos Estudos - CEBRAP , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-33002010000300004
Abstract: this article argues that joaquim nabuco's position as a leader of the brazilian anti-slavery movement was due to his ability to build the brokerage between diverse social networks, operating as a broker between parliamentary and civil society activism, on the one hand, and between the local activism and the global abolitionist network, on the other.
A Igreja católica, a política e a sociedadade
Alonso, Aurelio;
Estudos Avan?ados , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-40142011000200010
Abstract: this essay aims to analyze the relations between the catholic church and the cuban socialist state over the years after the revolution. to this end, we established a chronology of these relations that includes the ensuing frictions, conflicts and dialogues - from the expulsion of a bishop and his deportation to spain after a procession dedicated to our virgin of charity [la virgen de la caridad del cobre, cuba's patron saint], which ended in a march against the revolution in havana in 1961, to the visit of pope john paul ii in 1998 and the reconciliation and restructuring of the catholic church on the island. as a constant background concern, the chronology takes into account the dilemma between "revolution" and "catholicism that was introduced in 1959. thus, the essay traces the long road from initial divergence to the current climate of religious freedom and conciliatory dialogue between church and state in cuba.
Cuba: a sociedade após meio século de mudan?as, conquistas e contratempos
Alonso, Aurelio;
Estudos Avan?ados , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-40142011000200002
Abstract: the revolutionary victory in 1959 transformed the social and economic structure, as well as the notions and collective imagination of the cuban people. this episode is already half a century old, during which time the mobile and contradictory nature of the situations, through external and internal factors, gave rise to victories, setbacks and very complex effects in cuban society today . the resistance of the cuban project against imperial hegemony over the last fifty-odd years surprised the world's centers of power, when cuban society chose a socialist path in the 1960s. the scope of its strategies of solidarity was also cause of surprise, with their prolonged and decisive struggle against apartheid over the two following decades. equally surprising, cuba remained standing after the worldwide fall of socialism. during this period, the country showed time and again that resistance is possible and necessary.
