José Manuel Azevedo, Rui Almeida, Pedro Almeida
International Journal of Intelligence Science (IJIS) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/ijis.2012.224023
Abstract: Data Mining (DM) methods are being increasingly used in prediction with time series data, in addition to traditional statistical approaches. This paper presents a literature review of the use of DM with time series data, focusing on shorttime stocks prediction. This is an area that has been attracting a great deal of attention from researchers in the field. The main contribution of this paper is to provide an outline of the use of DM with time series data, using mainly examples related with short-term stocks prediction. This is important to a better understanding of the field. Some of the main trends and open issues will also be introduced.

Targeting Brazilian Market through Digital Branding Strategies: The Relevance of the Cultural Dimension  [PDF]
Lilian Maria de Souza Almeida
Open Journal of Business and Management (OJBM) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/ojbm.2015.31004
Abstract: While Internet has been achieving its omnipresence worldwide and offering to companies the opportunity of trading in a “no-borders” market, global brands, and those aspiring to become global, face the challenge of dealing with significant cultural differences. Emergent economies account for one of the greatest opportunities for global brands interested in extending their business overseas through digital channels. Among these economies, Brazil has been receiving special focus lately as a promising consumer market. Working from a theoretical point of view through literature and simultaneously examining companies as potential paradigms, this study aims to provide suggestions for global brands interested in targeting the Brazilian market through effective cross-cultural digital branding strategies. The results are valuable insights about how to establish better communication with Brazilian consumers and also offer some guidance to help marketers to keep brands desired and admired in Brazil. It was mainly concluded that global brands should find out the right balance between a standardized and an adapted cultural approach in order to establish a trust-worthy proximity with Brazilian consumers on the digital environment.

Almeida, Carla;
História, Ciências, Saúde-Manguinhos , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-59702006000500017
Abstract: the article discusses fayga ostrower's contribution to both science and art. artist, educator, and humanist, ostrower (1920-2001) devoted her life to art and art education. between 1948 and 2001, her works were exhibited at numerous museums in brazil and internationally. she taught at rio de janeiro's museu de arte moderna for sixteen years, gave classes at brazil's top art institutes, and lectured with charisma, enlightenment, and clarity to students, artists, workers, and businessmen around the world. the article offers a brief biography of the artist's life, and describes her main ideas on the relation between art and science, a topic that fascinated her. many of these thoughts were recorded in her penultimate book, a sensibilidade do intelecto: vis?es paralelas de espa?o e tempo na arte e na ciência (the sensibility of the intellect: parallel views of space and time in art and science), for which she received brazil's top literary prize, the jabuti, in 1999.

Médicos e assistência médica: Estado, mercado ou regula??o? Uma falsa quest?o
Almeida, Celia;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 1997, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X1997000400009
Abstract: a cost crisis in the health care sector has focused discussion on health care services and an assessment of the results of investments in the health sector, underlining the importance of medical doctors as key actors in this area. this article reviews the main analytical approaches to professionalism in the last decade and discusses the most recent paradigmatic shifts. new approaches have emerged for correlating the medical division of labor (contained in specialized fields which are becoming more and more fragmented) with structural and historical changes in the professional market, as well as the collective action developed by these interest groups in their relationship to the state. these approaches, more closely linked to political economy, have made important contributions to this debate, because they allow for a questioning of the kind of ideological polarization contained in health care reform proposals aimed at a withdrawal of the state and the rule of the market (with no analytical justification), in addition to shifting regulation to a position outside the historically mutable dynamics between the state, health care providers, and clients of the health care sector and the public policy arena.
Reforma de sistemas de servicios de salud y equidad en América Latina y el Caribe: algunas lecciones de los a?os 80 y 90
Almeida, Celia;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2002000400002
Abstract: this essay proposes a review of the issues of equity and reform in latin america and the caribbean in the context of changes in recent decades, emphasizing the discussion of health systems reform. the economic, political, and social context prevailing in the critical 1970s extensively favored budget cuts for public expenditures, cost containment, changes in the health sector power structure, and health services reorganization from an 'economicist', pragmatic, and restrictive perspective. an inventory of the latin american economic and social situation is markedly negative, and efforts to recover from the damage done in the 1980s were largely unsuccessful in the 1990s. the reforms implemented in some paradigmatic countries (chile, colombia, costa rica, argentina, and brazil), in light of their specific characteristics, demonstrate the dissemination of a common agenda, adapted to the various national conditions. some positive results of these processes were diluted in new problems caused by the reforms themselves, especially in countries with more radical adherence to the new reformist model; meanwhile, in the country where the public, universal system based on solidarity was most consolidated, the management changes have obtained the best results. however, overcoming inequalities is still a distant goal.
Eqüidade e reforma setorial na América Latina: um debate necessário
Almeida, Celia;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2002000700004
Abstract: reform and equity are terms that have frequented political discourse, technical documents, and conceptual discussions in recent decades in different proposals with different ideological references. to understand the importance and centrality of these themes in the contemporary debate in latin america implies a more in-depth reflection on health policy in the sphere of social policies and to define which reforms were are discussing and the place equity occupies in this discussion. the first part of this essay discusses the concepts of reform and equity, followed by a review of health policy as a social policy. the article ends by discussing the central elements on the health systems reform agenda in latin america. the conclusion is that the situation is dramatic and that recent reforms have exacerbated inequalities and created new problems by replacing the values of solidarity and equal opportunity with those of "radical utilitarian individualism"; meanwhile, the principle of "health needs" has been replaced by that of "risk", "monetarized" and defined according to the individual's social and economic position. it becomes necessary to resume the discussion of social and health policies as the matrix of principles justifying the order ascribed to any other policies.
Argumentos em torno da possibilidade de infec??o por DST e Aids entre mulheres que se autodefinem como lésbicas
Almeida, G.;
Physis: Revista de Saúde Coletiva , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-73312009000200004
Abstract: the academic production motivated by hiv and aids epidemic has impelled research works related to the sexuality, configurating new investigation fields, mainly about gays. however, in brazil, the academic production which addresses to the std vulnerability, taking the lesbian identity into account, is not significant. the sexual health of women, expected to be heterosexual, was connected to the unique preoccupation about reproduction along the course of policies in terms of the attention to women's health, even facing aids. increasingly, considering the heterosexual female sexuality, female homosexuality has tended, in the brazilian society, to become invisible in the medical / gynecologic speech. the epidemic contributed to this continuing invisibility, due to strong beliefs in which the "lesbian body" would be the only one immune to the infection through the sexual via. the hypothesis guiding this paper is based on the idea that lesbians vulnerability is the "passport" for affirmation/inclusion of a certain identity mark in public policies agenda.
