Phenolic Content and Antioxidant Activity of Six Acanthaceae from Burkina Faso

Abstract: In this study the total phenolic and flavonoid content as well as the antioxidant activity of six Acanthaceae namely Blepharis lineariifolia PERS, Dicliptera verticillata (FORRSK.) C. CHRISTENS, Dyschoriste perrottetii (NEES) O. KTZE, Hygrophila auriculata (SCHUMACH.) HEINE, Lepidagathis anobrya NEES, Nelsonia canescens (LAM) SPRENG were evaluated. The total phenolic and flavonoid of their aqueous acetone extract were assessed by Folin-ciocalteu and AlCl3 method, respectively, whereas the antioxidant activities were determined by the DPPH method. Lepidagathis anobrya, Hygrophila auriculata and Nelsonia canescens which had the highest phenolic content, were found to possess the best antioxidant activities. The results suggest that these plants are good sources of antioxidants and support their use in cardiovascular and antiinflammatory diseases.

Abstract: In this paper we examine the large deviations principle (LDP) for sequences of classic Cramér-Lundberg risk processes under suitable time and scale modifications, and also for a wide class of claim distributions including (the non-super- exponential) exponential claims. We prove two large deviations principles: first, we obtain the LDP for risk processes on D[0,1] with the Skorohod topology. In this case, we provide an explicit form for the rate function, in which the safety loading condition appears naturally. The second theorem allows us to obtain the LDP for Aggregate Claims processes on D[0,) with a different time-scale modification. As an application of the first result we estimate the ruin probability, and for the second result we work explicit calculations for the case of exponential claims.
Polyphenol Content and Antioxidant Activity of Fourteen Wild Edible Fruits from Burkina Faso

Abstract: A total of fourteen (14) species of wild edible fruits from Burkina Faso wereanalyzed for their phenolic and flavonoid contents, and their antioxidant activities usingthe DPPH, FRAP and ABTS methods. The data obtained show that the total phenolic andtotal flavonoid levels were significantly higher in the acetone than in the methanol extracts.Detarium microcarpum fruit had the highest phenolic and the highest flavonoid content,followed by that of Adansonia digitata, Ziziphus mauritiana, Ximenia americana andLannea microcarpa. Significant amounts of total phenolics were also detected in the otherfruit species in the following order of decreasing levels: Tamarindus indica > Sclerocaryabirrea > Dialium guineense > Gardenia erubescens > Diospyros mespiliformis > Parkiabiglobosa > Ficus sycomorus > Vitellaria paradoxa. Detarium microcarpum fruit alsoshowed the highest antioxidant activity using the three antioxidant assays. Fruits with highantioxidant activities were also found to possess high phenolic and flavonoid contents.There was a strong correlation between total phenolic and flavonoid levels and antioxidantactivities.

Abstract: The islets of Langerhans collectively form the endocrine pancreas, the organ that is soley responsible for insulin secretion in mammals, and which plays a prominent role in the control of circulating glucose and metabolism. Normal function of these islets implies the coordination of different types of endocrine cells, noticeably of the beta cells which produce insulin. Given that an appropriate secretion of this hormone is vital to the organism, a number of mechanisms have been selected during evolution, which now converge to coordinate beta cell functions. Among these, several mechanisms depend on different families of integral membrane proteins, which ensure direct (cadherins, N-CAM, occludin, and claudins) and paracrine communications (pannexins) between beta cells, and between these cells and the other islet cell types. Also, other proteins (integrins) provide communication of the different islet cell types with the materials that form the islet basal laminae and extracellular matrix. Here, we review what is known about these proteins and their signaling in pancreatic β-cells, with particular emphasis on the signaling provided by Cx36, given that this is the integral membrane protein involved in cell-to-cell communication, which has so far been mostly investigated for effects on beta cell functions. 1. Introduction In vertebrates, pancreatic beta cells are the sole source of the insulin hormone [1]. The modulation of insulin secretion as a function of the changing metabolic demand and environmental conditions, specifically the levels of circulating glucose, cannot be quantitatively fulfilled by a single beta cell. Indeed, the total amount of insulin of one cell (~10?pg) will not allow for establishment and maintenance of the basal circulating levels of the hormone (~1.25?mg/L in humans). Assuming that all beta cells of the million islets which are thought to be dispersed in a human pancreas contribute to these levels, this implies that about 125 cells should simultaneously secrete in each islet. After a meal, this number should increase by about 5 to 6-fold to rapidly establish the postprandial levels of insulin, which are required to maintain normoglycemia, and be tightly regulated to ensure the peripheral oscillations of the circulating levels of the hormone, which prevent the target tissues to establish a resistance to the hormone [2–4]. Eventually, the mechanism(s) controlling these surge and oscillations should also be able to synchronously turn off the secreting cells, in order to avoid dangerous hypoglycemia, once insulin has launched its

Abstract: Essential oils from leaves of Lippia multiflora, Mentha x piperita and Ocimum basilicum from Burkina Faso were analysed by GC–FID and GC–MS. Major components were p-cymene, thymol, b-caryophyllene, carvacrol and carvone for L. multiflora, menthol and iso-menthone for M. x piperita and, linalool and eugenol for O. basilicum. The essential oils and their major monoterpene alcohols were tested against nine bacterial strains using the disc diffusion and broth microdilution methods. The essential oils with high phenolic contents were the most effective antimicrobials. The checkerboard method was used to quantify the efficacy of paired combinations of essential oils and their major components. The best synergetic effects among essential oils and major components were obtained with combinations involving O. basilicum essential oil and eugenol, respectively. As phenolic components are characterized by a strong spicy aroma, this study suggests that the selection of certain combinations of EOs could help to reduce the amount of essential oils and consequently reduce any adverse sensory impact in food.
Antiacetylcholinesterase and antioxidant activity of essential oils from six medicinal plants from Burkina Faso

Abstract: in this investigation, we evaluated essential oils from six medicinal plants from burkina faso for their antiacetylcholinesterase and antioxidant abilities. the chemotype of most active were also determined. the best antiacetylcholinesterase activities were recorded for the essential oils of eucalyptus camaldulensis (ic50 18.98 μ g/ml) and ocimum canum (ic50 36.16 μ g/ml). their chemotype have been related to the 1,8-cineole one. both essential oils demonstrated a linear mixed non competitive inhibition. the essential oil of ocimum basilicum which belong to the linalool-eugenol chemotype exhibited the best radical scavenging activity (ic50 3.82 μ g/ml) and reducing power (531.75 mg aae/g). in comparison with gallic and ascorbic acids, o. basilicum essential oil evidenced interesting antioxidant activities. the antiacetylcholinesterase and antioxidant activities of essential oils were discussed in regard with their chemical composition.

Abstract: In the last few years, thanks to the Internet, access to foreign language media has become more and more easy, which is why the number of foreign language media users has increased. This research focuses on exploring the use of German speaking media by Romanian students from the German speaking departments of the Babes-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca. The theoretical background of the study is the Uses and Gratifications theory. The research methods applied were the focus group, followed by a survey applied to a representative number of students. Our research highlighted the fact that the students from German language programs often used German television and German websites. In regard to the German media in general, most respondents stated that they satisfy, in a very large mount, the needs described by the Uses and Gratifications model.
