Revista Saúde.Com , 2008,
Abstract: In recent years, ingestion of inorganic arsenic from drinking water has emerged as an important public health concern. It enters drinking water supplies from natural deposits in the earth or from agricultural and industrial practices, mainly the mining. The health consequences of chronic arsenic exposure include increased risk for various forms of cancer and numerous pathologic effects, such as cutaneous effects (hyperpigmentation and hyperkeratoses), gastrointestinal effects, vascular effects, diabetes mellitus, and peripheral neuropathy. This way, this study presents through a critical revision of the literature, the more relevant current aspects on the immunological consequences, carcinogenic and resulting genetics of the human intoxication for arsenic. They were identified and analyzed 50 works published on the subject among the years of 1979 and 2008, being used as main sources LILACS-BIREME MEDLINE/Index Medicus, SciELO and PubMed. The specific effects of the intoxication for arsenic about the human health are not still completely elucidated. Thus, is possible that this element affects functions still unknown, becoming important the scientific exploration on the subject.

Orbital : the Electronic Journal of Chemistry , 2012,
Abstract: Porphyrins are very attractive compounds due to their wide application in many areas of new materials as chemical technology, ecology, medicine and, electronics. In the last years, they are also been a focus of attention owing to their implications to many photocatalytic reactions. Cardanol (isolated form cashew nut shell liquid) and glycerol (side product of biodiesel industry) are raw materials of low aggregated value; however, they hold chemical structures with functionalities that can lead to products of high commercial value to Brazilian industry. Aiming to use these chemical materials, our research group has proposed the synthesis of new hybrid molecular structures of porphyrin-cardanol-glycerol, which will be submitted to test of their photocatalytic properties. The synthetic proposal is based on the reaction of 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde (1) and epichloriridine (2) (derived from glycerol), using pyridine in dichloromethane and FeCl3 as a catalyst, under reflux and stirring. This process will provide the mixture of intermediate 3 and 4. These compounds will be attacked by the nucleophile cardanol (5) in sealed tube, using pyridine and dichloromethane at 120 oC for 80 hours, giving the intermediate 6. After oxidation of the alcohol 6, the corresponding ketone will be achieved. Continuing the synthesis, these intermediates will separately react with pyrrol, giving the wished porphyrins that in turn will be transformed in macromolecules by treatment with Grubbs catalyst, according to methodologies already known in the literature. The previously synthesized compounds 3, 4, 5 and 6 had their structures confirmed by spectroscopy analyses of NMR (1H and 13C).

Abstract: chanarin-dorfman syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive disease that may be associated with ichthyosis and is characterized by the presence of intracellular lipid droplets in the cells of many different tissues, in particular in keratinocytes and granulocytes. mutations in the gene that encodes the abhd5 protein of the esterase/lipase/thioesterase subfamily have been identified as the main cause of the disorder. the extracutaneous manifestations are heterogeneous, both in intensity and characteristics. systemic involvement may include hepatosplenomegaly, double-sided cataracts, growth retardation, myopathy, ataxia and bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. (1) since the first reports of the syndrome (1) only 30 patients have been described in the literature, mostly from middle eastern countries.(2) the diagnosis is confirmed by the presence of lipid droplets in granulocytes of peripheral blood.(3)

Ambiente e água : An Interdisciplinary Journal of Applied Science , 2012,
Abstract: The present study aimed to adapt a rapid river assessment protocols (RAP) to be used by elementary school children. The study was conducted in Ipameri, GO and the RAP was adapted for the evaluation of streams in the Cerrado biome. Based on two protocol models, the developed RAP included: physical parameters that affect the functioning of streams, language adapted to the educational level of elementary school and the presence of drawings that could facilitate the field application of RAP by the students. For consolidation of the adapted instrument, it was offered a monitoring workshop to 95 students from two public education institutions, and developed an analysis and interpretation of the pattern of responses obtained during the practical step of the workshop. The Bartlett and Levene tests revealed no statistical differences between the response patterns of the students, allowing to infer that the developed RAP was understandable by the evaluators. The application of the RAP was fast (20 to 40 minutes) and the students reported that the developed instrument helped them to familiarize with environmental issues. In addition, the monitoring workshop helped them to understand the instrument and the available illustrations facilitated the field evaluation. In addition, the students concluded that they have become aware of the issues related to the water resource preservation and also that participation in the environmental monitoring workshop allowed the appropriation of knowledge about the river system functioning. It was concluded that adapted RAP has been proved to be a useful and interesting tool for using in environmental education projects and programs.
