Abstract: Predicting users’ next location allows to anticipate their future context, thus providing additional time to be ready for that context and react consequently. This work is focused on a set of LZ-based algorithms (LZ, LeZi Update and Active LeZi) capable of learning mobility patterns and estimating the next location with low resource needs, which makes it possible to execute them on mobile devices. The original algorithms have been divided into two phases, thus being possible to mix them and check which combination is the best one to obtain better prediction accuracy or lower resource consumption. To make such comparisons, a set of GSM-based mobility traces of 95 different users is considered. Finally, a prototype for mobile devices that integrates the predictors in a public transportation recommender system is described in order to show an example of how to take advantage of location prediction in an ubiquitous computing environment.
A Bandwidth-Efficient Service for Local Information Dissemination in Sparse to Dense Roadways

Sensors , 2013, DOI: 10.3390/s130708612
Abstract: Thanks to the research on Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs), we will be able to deploy applications on roadways that will contribute to energy efficiency through a better planning of long trips. With this goal in mind, we have designed a gas/charging station advertising system, which takes advantage of the broadcast nature of the network. We have found that reducing the number of total sent packets is important, as it allows for a better use of the available bandwidth. We have designed improvements for a distance-based flooding scheme, so that it can support the advertising application with good results in sparse to dense roadway scenarios.
Geographical variation in the genetic diversity and composition of the endangered Queen Conch Strombus gigas (Mesogastropoda: Strombidae) from Yucatán, México
Pérez-Enriquez,Ricardo; Garcia-Rodriguez,Francisco Javier; Mendoza-Carrion,Gabriela; Padilla,Claudia;
Revista de Biología Tropical , 2011,
Abstract: in mexico and elsewhere in the caribbean, the queen conch strombus gigas is an endangered species. understanding the genetic connectivity of their populations will support management strategies for long term conservation of the species. genetic diversity and population differentiation was assessed from samples collected at banco chinchorro and isla cozumel in the mexican caribbean and at arrecife alacranes in the gulf of mexico. samples were obtained from the commercial capture at banco chinchorro (n=50) and isla cozumel (n=40) on march 2004. on november 2004, a non-invasive method for the arrecife alacranes sampling was applied, taking the hemolymph of live animals (n=65) and releasing them to the wild. the mitochondrial dna variation at two genes (coi and cyt-b) was analyzed. genetic diversity at the three locations ranged between 0.55-0.65 in coi and 0.87-0.94 in cyt-b, showing no bottleneck evidences. a non-significant fixation index (fst=0.019, p=0.161) and a maximum parsimony network tree that did not show particular clades associated with any of the geographical locations, suggested a lack of statistically significant genetic differentiation among populations. nevertheless, the cline patterns observed in both genetic diversity and haplotypic frequencies from banco chinchorro through arrecife alacranes, and the larger genetic distance between these locations from those between isla cozumel, banco chinchorro and arrecife alacranes, suggest the possibility of a pattern of isolation-by distance. the role of the main current systems over the potential genetic differences in s. gigas populations along the mexican caribbean, and the conservation management of s. gigas at these locations as discrete units is discussed. rev. biol. trop. 59 (3): 1115-1126. epub 2011 september 01.

Amount and Sources of Income of Older Households in Mexico
Alicia Rodriguez-Flores,Sharon A. DeVaney
Journal of Financial Counseling and Planning , 2006,
Abstract: This study investigated the amount and sources of income of households headed by a person age 60 and older in Mexico using the 2002 Household Income and Expenditure Survey of Mexico (N = 3,672). The results suggest that Mexicans do not come from a culture of retirement planning. In households where the head had a source of income, the income was composed of pensions, 24%; wages, 19%; business income, 15%; partnerships, 13%; gifts, 10%; and other sources, 19%. If the head of the household reported no income, he or she was dependent on other earners and gifts. When advising those who were born in Mexico, consumer educators and advisors should realize that these households might expect support from family members instead of saving for retirement.
The structure of bivariate rational hypergeometric functions
Eduardo Cattani,Alicia Dickenstein,Fernando Rodriguez Villegas
Mathematics , 2009,
Abstract: We describe the structure of all codimension-two lattice configurations $A$ which admit a stable rational $A$-hypergeometric function, that is a rational function $F$ all whose partial derivatives are non zero, and which is a solution of the $A$-hypergeometric system of partial differential equations defined by Gel'fand, Kapranov and Zelevinsky. We show, moreover, that all stable rational $A$-hypergeometric functions may be described by toric residues and apply our results to study the rationality of bivariate series whose coefficients are quotients of factorials of linear forms.
Competi??o e conflito em redes de economia solidária: análise do projeto de implanta??o da Central de Comercializa??o de Resíduos Sólidos de Porto Alegre (Brasil)
Carrion, Rosinha Machado;
Cadernos EBAPE.BR , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1679-39512009000400002
Abstract: the article uses bourdieu′s field theory to analyze the findings of an exploratory-descriptive study, carried out in solidary economy "enterprises", in order to uncover the reasons that led to the failure of a local government project to establish a collective solid waste commercialization center in porto alegre (brazil), that had been requested by workers within the solidary economic sector. among the factors that contributed to the failure of this project, one is particularly noteworthy: strong competition between members of the solidary recycling network.
Organiza??es privadas sem fins lucrativos: a participa??o do mercado no terceiro setor
Carrion, Rosinha Machado;
Tempo Social , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-20702000000200015
Abstract: this study analizes the participation of private business in the third sector. it is based on research carried out in four of the seven `gaucho' institutions, affiliated to gife, an institution that congregates outstanding business initiatives in the social field in brazil. the article reveals the move from the `logic of charity' to that of social investment. thus, the act of giving gains strategic connotations setting a priority on actions and projects that, due to their features, may be interpreted as being capable of contributing more effectively towards the solution of social problems. at the same time, the `gaucho' private business institutions associated to gife show a clear preference for preventive actions such as those that aim at keeping children and adolescents from becoming outcasts. schools providing professional traineeship are among such initiatives.
