Work Experience: Participation or Creation?  [PDF]
Alice Itani
Psychology (PSYCH) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/psych.2014.55052
Abstract:

Where does the successful performance of businesses and organizations mostly stem from? Is it from engagement in work or an effort undergoing imposed expectations? The latter has been a matter of much controversy. Proposals for participation in the workplace were a target of much criticism by Castoriadis and Tragtemberg. Without intending to answer such a predicament, this paper discusses points that seek to contribute to the debate. It analyzes the experience of air traffic controllers, which may be approached not as much as an effort in itself, but as the result of a collective creative process. It is based on research data collected from the past fifteen years from aviation workers, above all from air traffic control centers in S?o Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

The Discrimination of English Vowels by Cantonese ESL Learners in Hong Kong: A Test of the Perceptual Assimilation Model  [PDF]
Alice Y. W. Chan
Open Journal of Modern Linguistics (OJML) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ojml.2013.33025
Abstract:

This article discusses the results of a study which investigated Cantonese ESL learners’ perception of English vowels and their perceived similarity between similar L1 and L2 vowels in an attempt to test the prediction of the Perceptual Assimilation Model (PAM). Forty university English majors participated in three L2 perception tasks, which aimed at discerning their perception of English vowels spoken in different contexts, and one L1 L2 speech perception task, which aimed at discerning their classification of L2 vowels into native vowel categories and their perceived similarity between similar L1 and L2 vowels. It was found that their classifications of English vowels into Cantonese vowels and their perception of the corresponding English vowels did not provide strong support for the prediction of the model. The effects and extent of native language phonological influence are yet to be determined.

What Does “Noise Pollution” Mean?  [PDF]
Alice Elizabeth González
Journal of Environmental Protection (JEP) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/jep.2014.54037
Abstract:

Noise features different characteristics that make it different from every other “classic” pollutant. Noise is invisible; it does not smell; it disappears when the source is turned off and leaves no traces in the environment. In addition, when people perceive something wrong about their hearing capacity, it is often long time after the beginning of noise exposure. This fact contributes to strengthening the misconception that noise is not harmful to human health or, at least, efforts and funds aim preferably at controling and decreasing the emission of other pollutants. Adding to this, most people tend to consider that noise is the price to pay for accessing to the amenities of the Technological Era and it is indivisible and inevitably linked to them. Last but not least, noise pollution could adversely affect ecosystems and ecological services. Then, how is it possible to convince the decision makers that noise pollution is one of the major current environmental problems? The aim of this paper is to discuss step by step the applicability of noise of a “pollution” definition, as a way to ease the understanding that lowering environmental noise levels should be prioritized: because it will lead to a healthier and better society.

Production of strange particles in charged jets in p--Pb and Pb--Pb collisions measured with ALICE at the LHC
Alice Zimmermann,for the ALICE Collaboration
Physics , 2015,
Abstract: Studies of jet production can provide information about the properties of the hot and dense strongly interacting matter created in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Specifically, measurement of strange particles in jets may clarify the role of fragmentation processes in the anomalous baryon to meson ratio at intermediate particle pT that was observed in PbPb and, to a lesser extent, in pPb collisions. In this contribution, measurements of the pT spectra of Lambda and Antilambda baryons and K0s mesons produced in association with charged jets in PbPb collisions at sqrt(sNN)=2.76 TeV and pPb collisions at sqrt(sNN)=5.02 TeV are presented. The analysis is based on data which was recorded by ALICE at the LHC, exploiting its excellent particle identification capabilities. The baryon meson ratios of the spectra of strange particles associated with jets are studied for different event activities in p-Pb and are restricted to central events in PbPb. A comparison to the ratios obtained for inclusive particles and for particles stemming from the underlying event as well as to PYTHIA simulations is shown.
Recent results on two-particle correlations in ALICE
Alice Ohlson,for the ALICE Collaboration
Physics , 2015,
Abstract: The discovery of correlations between particles separated by several units of pseudorapidity in high-multiplicity pp and p-Pb collisions, reminiscent of structures observed in Pb-Pb collisions, was a challenge to traditional ideas about collectivity in heavy ion collisions. In order to further explore long-range correlations and provide information to theoretical models, correlations between forward trigger muons and mid-rapidity associated hadrons were measured in p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mbox{NN}}} = 5.02~\mbox{TeV}$. The results demonstrate that the nearside and awayside ridges extend to $\Delta\eta \sim \pm 5$ and that the $v_2$ of muons, obtained from subtracting the correlation functions in high- and low-multiplicity events, is $(16\pm6)\%$ higher in the Pb-going than in the p-going direction. The results are compared with AMPT simulations.
Hemispheric Asymmetry for Language Processing and Lateral Preference in Simultaneous Interpreters  [PDF]
Alice Mado Proverbio, Roberta Adorni
Psychology (PSYCH) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/psych.2011.21002
Abstract: Neuroimaging studies showed that linguistic functions are less lateralized in polyglots than in monolinguals. However, there is not much agreement about the role of the two hemispheres in semantic and syntactic processing in bilinguals. In this study, 35 right-handed Italian speakers were shown 520 words and pseudo-words. The task consisted in detecting a given target letter by pressing a button with either the left or right hand. 19 simultaneous interpreters and 16 monolingual University students participated in the study. Interpreters performed the task in their native (L1) and second language (L2 = English); monolingual students only in L1. Response times to targets were recorded as a function of the hand used. RTs were faster to words than pseudo-words (word superiority effect). Results showed a significant right hand/LH advantage for the student group, and a complete lack of asymmetry for the interpreters both in L1 and L2. These data indicate a left-lateralization of linguistic functions in monolinguals and reduced lateralization in polyglots. The lack of lateralization in interpreters can be attributed either to their polyglottism, or to their prolonged practice of simultaneous interpreting strategies (e.g., dealing with two input channels; right ear/LH for listening to themselves interpret and left ear/RH for listening to the source language).
Announcing the Andy Kaplan Prize and call for nominations
Alice Telesnitsky
Retrovirology , 2007, DOI: 10.1186/1742-4690-4-3
Abstract: A new prize in tribute to Andy Kaplan has been established, to be awarded annually, with the purpose of advancing the career and honoring the accomplishments of a distinguished postdoctoral scientist as he or she embarks on an independent career in retrovirology. Until his untimely death at 47 last year, Andy Kaplan was an Associate Professor in Medicine and in Microbiology and Immunology at UNC Chapel Hill [1].Like many people in the retrovirus field, Andy started attending the Cold Spring Harbor Retrovirus Meeting while he was a postdoc. Many of us got to know Andy and his engaging personality through this meeting, and it was always a pleasure sharing his excitement about science and his interest in junior investigators. The format of the Cold Spring Harbor meeting – predominantly short talks describing the latest results, presented by the people who performed the work themselves – has long highlighted and supported scientists in training. With this new prize, we honor Andy Kaplan's legacy while celebrating the triumphs and challenges of newcomers to our field.The inaugural Andy Kaplan Prize will be awarded this May at the Cold Spring Harbor Retroviruses meeting. It will consist of a modest cash prize (the exact amount to be determined by the fund advisor) and an opportunity for the recipient to present a short address on his or her research. We anticipate that the award will become an integral part of the Cold Spring Harbor Retroviruses legacy and a valuable laurel for a new investigator in our field.We ask that you bring this announcement to the attention of eligible applicants. The Kaplan Prize will be awarded to an accomplished young retrovirologist who will have completed his or her PhD no more than four years prior to May 2007. An application for the First Annual Andy Kaplan Prize – which is due February 14, 2007 – will consist of materials similar to those required to apply for a faculty position.Specific application information is available at a website [2
O Hospital-Colónia Rovisco Pais: a última leprosaria portuguesa e os universos contingentes da experiência e da memória
Cruz, Alice;
História, Ciências, Saúde-Manguinhos , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-59702009000200008
Abstract: the hospital-colónia rovisco pais was inaugurated in portugal in the 1940s for the treatment, study and prophylaxis of leprosy based on the compulsive internment model, whose configuration reflects the total institution concept proposed by goffman. it concerns an important hygiene project of the estado novo. its educative paradigm combined elements inspired in european social medicine and the ideology of the paternalistic portuguese dictatorial regime. the hospital colony here will be thought of as a disciplinary dispositive, developing considerations regarding the confrontation between disciplinary power and experience. memory emerges as a contingent instrument to access the practices and interstitial meanings woven into the hospital colony's daily life, seeking to find out about the experience of its former patients as political subjects.
A antropologia e o estudo do consumo: revis?o crítica das suas rela??es e possibilidades
Duarte,Alice;
Etnográfica , 2010,
Abstract: the paper begins by placing in time the emergency of consumption as an area of anthropological investigation, seeking to expose the circumstances that made the establishment of an anthropology of consumption rather difficult. next, following the development steps within that area of studies, the paper presents a selective synthesis of authors and works that, in any way, are making a change to a real concern on the study of consumption.
A violência no imaginário dos agentes educativos
Itani, Alice;
Cadernos CEDES , 1998, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-32621998000400004
Abstract: violence is very much present in debates. in fact, it is part of school as social institution which is present in daily experience not only of educational agents but also of pupils, particularly in brazilian society, with deep social inequality. how does violence develop in the practices and actions within the educational process? the notion of violence is commonly related to its most visible facet which is that of urban crime scenes and robberies. the dimensions through which violence manifests itself are diverse. among the dimensions through which violence affects us most noxiously are those of legalized and institutionalized violence, which are very little visible, sometimes even invisible. for this reason, we are unable to defend ourselves against them. the action of educational agents is an institutionalized reaction, that could become institutionalized violence too, throughout the educational process which establishes and reproduces itself by dissemination throughout the social relationships. the present text seeks to contribute to the debate on the question of violence in schools by presenting some aspects observed in the actions and practices of educational agents and in daily school life.
