Retrenchment and restructuring in an age of austerity: what (if anything) can be learned from the affluent democracies?
Pierson, Paul;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2002000700002
Abstract: the article discusses some difficulties of drawing implications from welfare state reform in the organisation for economic co-operation and development for "middle-income countries", and whose welfare states have been less well institutionalized. it is argued that globalization's role in contemporary social policy dynamics were not unimportant, but social processes occurring within national contexts were probably more important. there is not a single "new politics of the welfare state" but distinct political dynamics in different "regimes" or "configurations", which are characterized by different problem loads and different structures of political opportunity. different factors are crucial in explaining outcomes in different configurations and there is little reason to expect much convergence in social policy outcomes across regime type. contemporary welfare state reform is depicted as a process of restructuring rather than dismantling, what can encourage the possibilities for developing coalitions advancing multi-dimensional agendas of welfare state reform.

The Current-Temperature Phase Diagram of Layered Superconductors
Stephen W. Pierson
Physics , 1996, DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevB.55.14536
Abstract: The behavior of clean layered superconductors in the presence of a finite electric current and in zero-magnetic field behavior is addressed. The structure of the current temperature phase diagram and the properties of each of the four regions will be explained. We will discuss the expected current voltage and resistance characteristics of each region as well as the effects of finite size and weak disorder on the phase diagram. In addition, the reason for which a weakly non-ohmic region exists above the transition temperature will be explained.
A Taylor series solution of the reactor point kinetics equations
David McMahon,Adam Pierson
Physics , 2010, DOI: 10.1016/j.anucene.2013.03.004
Abstract: The method of Taylor series expansion is used to develop a numerical solution to the reactor point kinetics equations. It is shown that taking a first order expansion of the neutron density and precursor concentrations at each time step gives results that are comparable to those obtained using other popular and more complicated methods. The algorithm developed using a Taylor series expansion is simple, completely transparent, and highly accurate. The procedure is tested using a variety of initial conditions and input data, including step reactivity, ramp reactivity, sinusoidal, and zigzag reactivity. These results are compared to those obtained using other methods.
A Review of the Real Space Renormalization Group Analysis of the Two- Dimensional Coulomb Gas, the Kosterlitz-Thouless-Berezinski Transition, and Extensions to a Layered Vortex Gas
Stephen W. Pierson
Physics , 1997, DOI: 10.1080/01418639708241138
Abstract: Fundamental properties of the Kosterlitz-Thouless-Berezinskii (KTB) transition which occurs in systems in the universality class of the two-dimensional X-Y model are reviewed here with an emphasis on the real-space renormalization group analysis used to derive the recursion relations. A derivation of the unique temperature dependence of the correlation length of this system will be presented and the signatures of the KTB transition in electronic transport measurements will be explained. Extensions of this model and technique to layered superconductors will also be presented. The size of the 3D critical region, the nature of the 3D crossover, and the effect of a finite electric current will be discussed.
