Iridescence in Meat Caused by Surface Gratings
Juan Leonardo Martinez-Hurtado,Muhammad Safwan Akram,Ali Kemal Yetisen
Foods , 2013, DOI: 10.3390/foods2040499
Abstract: The photonic structure of cut muscle tissues reveals that the well-ordered gratings diffract light, producing iridescent colours. Cut fibrils protruding from the muscle surface create a two-dimensional periodic array, which diffract light at specific wavelengths upon illumination. However, this photonic effect misleads consumers in a negative way to relate the optical phenomenon with the quality of the product. Here we discuss the fundamentals of this optical phenomenon and demonstrate a methodology for quantitatively measuring iridescence caused by diffraction gratings of muscle tissue surface of pork ( Sus scrofa domesticus) using reflection spectrophotometry. Iridescence was discussed theoretically as a light phenomenon and spectral measurements were taken from the gratings and monitored in real time during controlled drying. The findings show that the intensity of diffraction diminishes as the surface grating was dried with an air flow at 50 °C for 2 min while the diffracted light wavelength was at 585 ± 9 nm. Our findings indicate that the diffraction may be caused by a blazed surface grating. The implications of the study include providing guidelines to minimise the iridescence by altering the surface microstructure, and in consequence, removing the optical effect.

Abstract: Dear Colleagues, As a result of globalization, the English language has inevitably had an active part for journals for increasing impact factors. Thus, become a widely distributed journal worldwide, I invite all authors to submit their papers in English to CDJ. I’m happy to announce that Dr. Sauro has accepted the role of associate editor in CDJ. I’m grateful to him for sparing his time for CDJ. Furthermore, I would like to thank Dr. Foschi and Dr. Kantarci for joining our family. Our journal has become a member of CrossRef. Thus, articles have been published with doi numbers in January 2012 issue. Moreover, accepted articles will be published with doi numbers in online first section. I would also like to once again express my personal gratitude to all authors and editorial board members for their valuable contributions. Hope to meet in the next issue. How to Round Subspaces: A New Spectral Clustering Algorithm
Ali Kemal Sinop
Computer Science , 2015,
Abstract: A basic problem in spectral clustering is the following. If a solution obtained from the spectral relaxation is close to an integral solution, is it possible to find this integral solution even though they might be in completely different basis? In this paper, we propose a new spectral clustering algorithm. It can recover a $k$-partition such that the subspace corresponding to the span of its indicator vectors is $O(\sqrt{opt})$ close to the original subspace in spectral norm with $opt$ being the minimum possible ($opt \le 1$ always). Moreover our algorithm does not impose any restriction on the cluster sizes. Previously, no algorithm was known which could find a $k$-partition closer than $o(k \cdot opt)$. We present two applications for our algorithm. First one finds a disjoint union of bounded degree expanders which approximate a given graph in spectral norm. The second one is for approximating the sparsest $k$-partition in a graph where each cluster have expansion at most $\phi_k$ provided $\phi_k \le O(\lambda_{k+1})$ where $\lambda_{k+1}$ is the $(k+1)^{st}$ eigenvalue of Laplacian matrix. This significantly improves upon the previous algorithms, which required $\phi_k \le O(\lambda_{k+1}/k)$.
Parenteral Insecticide Injection for Suicidal Attempt: A Case Report  [PDF]

Health (Health) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/health.2014.615225
Abstract: Poisoning by insecticides is a public health problem, particularly in developing countries. Insecticide poisoning may occur due to ingestion, inhalation or skin contact and is commonly associated with psychiatric illnesses. However, intramuscular injection of these chemicals is rare in the literature. In this report, we represent you a case of 35-year-old female who presented to our Emergency Department due to parenteral insecticide injection after an argument with her husband. A tender swelling was observed on the upper region of left upper extremity, underneath the shoulder. The patient did not develop any signs and symptoms of organophosphate poisoning and, after follow-up, the patient was discharged with total recovery. Even in the absence of systemic effects of OP, clinicians must be aware of possible complications of intramuscular injection of OPs such as cellulitis and abscess. We aimed to raise the awareness to this rare condition.
