Abstract: an experimental study was conducted from october to december, 1999, in the aquaculture facilities of cibnor sc, at la paz, bcs. to evaluate the effect of diet protein level on the productive response, in juveniles of the australian lobster, cherax quadricarinatus, diets with four levels of crude protein (20.45, 28.25, 37.33 y 45.44%), were formulated and probed. growth, grow rate, survival, biomass and food conversion rate were greater in juveniles fed with diets of 37.33 and 45.44% of crude protein. it is concluded that diet protein level affects the productive response of redclaw and a level of 37% of crude protein in the diet is enough to obtain acceptable results

Abstract: Un estudio experimental se realizó de octubre a diciembre de 1999, en el laboratorio de acuacultura del CIBNOR SC, en La Paz, BCS. Para evaluar el efecto del nivel proteico de la dieta sobre la respuesta productiva de juveniles de langosta australiana de agua dulce, Cherax quadricarinatus (redclaw), se formularon y probaron dietas con cuatro niveles de proteína (20.45, 28.25, 37.33 y 45.44%). El crecimiento, tasa de crecimiento específica, sobrevivencia, biomasa y el FCA fueron mayores en los juveniles alimentados con las dietas que contenían 37.33 y 45.44% de proteína cruda. Se concluye que el nivel proteico de la dieta afecta la respuesta productiva de los juveniles de langosta autraliana y que un nivel cercano a 37% de proteína, es suficiente para obtener resultados aceptables An experimental study was conducted from October to December, 1999, in the aquaculture facilities of CIBNOR SC, at La Paz, BCS. Abstract: perceptions about protected areas by local communities have a direct effect on their attitudes and can influence collective strategies of resource use. this study examines the knowledge of la ventana fishing community about the protection status, perceived benefits and environmental impacts of isla cerralvo, a protected island in the gulf of california, mexico. it focuses on the reasons for hunting feral goats and reactions toward the hunting management policy, and evaluates the relationship between these concerns and the community?s demographic and socio-economic variables. data were collected through a questionnaire survey. the findings indicate that a substantial number of inhabitants do not know that the island had a protected status; therefore, reinforcement of environmental education programs is needed and alternatives are proposed. perceived economic and non-economic benefits for the island were influenced by gender, and they can be used to encourage the local fishing community to support conservation. the main perceived environmental impact on isla cerralvo was the presence of garbage, and this was influenced by gender, age, and education level. a new management scheme about feral goat hunting is needed since the main use of goat meat was family consumption; inhabitants with low income actively hunted goats more frequently than those with higher incomes, reflecting a subsistence economy; and most inhabitants believe that goat hunting should be allowed.
Efecto de la adición del rotífero Brachionus rotundiformis (Tschugunoff, 1921) sobre la calidad del agua y la producción, en cultivos super-intensivos de camarón blanco del Pacífico Litopenaeus vannamei (Boone, 1931)

Abstract: the effectiveness of the rotifer brachionus rotundiformis as exogenous natural feed combined with balanced feed on the production parameters of litopenaeus vannamei and the water quality was evaluated. different concentrations of rotifers were tested (0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 rotifers ml-1) during 45 days. no significant differences were assessed in the phosphate levels among treatments. the ph level was statistically lower in the treatments with 15 and 20 rotifers ml-1. nitrate, nitrite and ammonia were significantly lower in the treatments with low concentration of rotifers (0 and 5 ml-1), while the highest values were achieved in the higher concentrations (15 and 20 ml-1) without reaching toxic levels. the weight gain, biomass, survival and specific growth rate of l. vannamei were significantly higher in the treatments with the higher number of rotifers (15 and 20 ml-1), whereas the lowest values were found in the control treatment (0 ml-1). the feed conversion ratio (fcr) was statistically lower in the treatment with the highest concentration of rotifers, while the highest fcr was found in the control. it is concluded that the use of the rotifer b. rotundiformis in high concentrations improves the production parameters on the pacific white shrimp, without deteriorating the water quality.

Abstract: El aceite esencial de las hojas de Solanum hypomalacophyllum (Solanaceae) recogidas en mayo 2007 en el Páramo La Culata (Estado de Mérida, Venezuela) fue obtenido por hidrodestilacion y fue analizado por GC y GC/MS. Se identificaron 11 componentes que representan el 92.4% del total del aceite. Los componentes mayoritarios fueron identificados como 5-octen-1-ol (39.7 %), cis-3-hexenol (20.2 %), 1-hexanol (12.0 %) y ácido hexadecanoico (5.2 %).

Abstract: a new species of the genus rowlandius reddell & cokendolpher, 1995 is described from sierra san luis, falcón state, northwestern venezuela. rowlandius arduus sp. n. may be characterized by having movable finger of chelicerae with a diminute sub-distal tooth, male with a poorly developed dorsal eminence on abdominal segment xii, and female with two pairs of weakly sclerotized, sinuous spermathecal lobes, without conspicuous terminal lobe. it is assigned to rowlandius tentatively, because some characters are not congruent with this genus, nevertheless the absence of synapomorphic characters limits its inclusion in other one. this is the first record of the genus from venezuela, and the third south american species described.

Abstract: this experiment investigated the effect of dietary protein and lipid levels on superoxide radical production and lipid peroxidation in juvenile redclaw crayfish, cherax quadricarinatus. nine practical diets were formulated to contain a combination of three crude protein (cp) (26, 31, and 36%) and three crude lipid (cl) (4, 8, and 12%) levels. four replicate groups of 15 crayfish (0.71 ± 0.13 g) per diet treatment were stocked in 40 l tanks, at 28 °c for 60 days. the control group was fed with a commercial shrimp diet. after the feeding period, superoxide radical (o2-) production and lipid peroxidation, measured as thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (tbars) of muscle, digestive gland and gill were analyzed. in the group fed the control diet, o2- production and tbars levels were significantly higher in the digestive gland than in muscles or gills. there was no effect of dietary protein or lipid level on o2- production in the digestive gland, muscle, and gill. however, dietary protein level significantly affected tbars levels in crayfish gills (p < 0.05). the results suggest tissue-specific effects of dietary protein and lipid levels on indicators of oxidative stress in redclaw. results indicate that a diet containing 31% cp and 8% cl provided adequate amounts of protein and lipid to satisfy nutritional requirements for optimal growth, while preventing diet-induced oxidative stress and protecting the integrity of the immune function.

Se realizó un estudio para evaluar el efecto de diferentes niveles de proteínas y lípidos en dietas prácticas sobre la producción de radical superóxido y el da o oxidativo en acociles juveniles Cherax quadricarinatus. Se evaluaron nueve dietas prácticas que contenían tres niveles de proteínas crudas (PC) (28, 35 y 40%) y tres niveles de lípidos (LC) (4, 8 y 12%). Cuatro grupos de 15 acociles (0.71 ± 0.13 g) por tratamiento fueron sembrados en acuarios de 40 L a 28 °C durante 60 días. El grupo control fue alimentado con una dieta comercial para camarón. Transcurrido el periodo de alimentación, los organismos fueron sacrificados y se midió la producción endógena de radical superóxido (O2-) y la peroxidación de lípidos (sustancias reactivas al ácido tiobarbitúrico, TBARS) en extractos tisulares de músculo, glándula digestiva, y branquias. En los acociles alimentados con la dieta control, la producción de O2- y los niveles de TBARS fueron significativamente mayores en la glándula digestiva que en el músculo o en las branquias. Abstract: This study determined the influence of dietary crude protein and energy levels on growth, survival, and antioxidant response of superoxide dismutase (SOD) in juvenile redclaw Cherax quadricarinatus. Six practical diets containing three crude protein (CP) levels (28, 35, and 40%) and two energy levels (~18 and 20 kJ · g-1) were tested. The control group was fed a commercial shrimp diet. The highest SOD activity (34.8 U·mg-1 protein) occurred in the diet with 35% CP and 18 kJ g-1. Soluble protein in tissue of redclaw fed 28 and 35% CP increased, compared to the control. The best mean final weight (9.23 g), weight gain (788%), and the lowest feed conversion ratio (1.3) occurred with the 35% CP diet. We conclude that a dietary CP content of 35% and 18 kJ · g-1 is recommended for production and best immune responses in redclaw. Se realizó un estudio para evaluar el efecto de los niveles de proteína y energía sobre el crecimiento, supervivencia y la respuesta antioxidante de la enzima superóxido dismutasa (SOD) en juveniles de Cherax quadricarinatus. El experimento incluyó seis dietas prácticas con tres niveles de proteína cruda (28, 35 y 40%) y dos niveles de energía (~18 y 20 kJ·g-1). El grupo control fue alimentado con alimento comercial para camarón. La actividad SOD más alta (34.8 U·mg-1 prot.) se presentó en juveniles alimentados con 35% de proteína cruda (PC) y 18 kJ·g-1. La proteína soluble en tejido de langosta de agua dulce alimentada con 28 y 35% de PC fue superior con respecto a los acociles del grupo control. El mejor peso final promedio (9.23 g), la mejor ganancia en peso (788%) y el factor de conversión alimenticia mas bajo (1.3) se presentó en acociles alimentados con 35% de PC. Se concluye que una dieta conteniendo 35% de PC y 18 kJg-1 de energía es recomendada para la producción y además incrementa la respuesta inmune de los acociles en su fase de juvenil.

Abstract:

This study describes Latina’s experience of sexual assault disclosure. This study contributes Latinas’ voices to the literature on sexual assault disclosure, about feelings experienced during the initial disclosure—regret, shame, and negative judgment of self, and about consequences experienced from the disclosure—feeling spoiled for marriage, silenced, and disbelieved. It points to the need for further research on social interventions to empower Latina sexual assault survivors. Although the literature review identified some research in the area of sexual assault with Latinas, there has been a limited amount of research conducted on feelings and consequences experienced specifically by Latinas during a sexual assault disclosure.
