Abstract: In the Chilean city of Concepción, the catastrophes seem to appear according to human will. This was one of the conditions that the inhabitants of that place tried to impose on nature in order to overcome, architecturally talking, its orders and dynamics. Thus, this present article tries to analyze the transformation of that legendary urbe in relation to the destructive effect of earthquakes and tsunamis that affected it since its foundation to its transfer in 1751. En la ciudad chilena de Concepción, las catástrofes parecieron manifestarse según la voluntad humana. ésta fue una de las condiciones que los habitantes de su suelo intentaron imponerle a la naturaleza para así superar, arquitectónicamente hablando, sus órdenes y dinámicas. En este contexto, el presente artículo analiza la transformación de aquella legendaria urbe con relación al efecto destructor de los terremotos y tsunamis que la afectaron desde su fundación hasta su traslado en 1751.
Ages and geochemistry of Mesozoic-Eocene back-arc volcanic rocks in the Aysén region of the Patagonian Andes, Chile

Abstract: eighteen new radiometric ages (fourteen 40ar-39ar, four k-ar), combined with previously published ages, confirm the existence of three main extensional back-arc volcanic events, previously defined by stratigraphic relationships, in chilean patagonia (aysén region). these three events developed during the middle jurassic -early cretaceous (160-130 ma). cretaceous (114-75 ma), and eocene (55-46 ma). based on distinct geochemical data and sr-nd isotopic characteristics of the back-arc volcanic rocks collected north and south of 46°30's, two mesozoic-eocene magmatic domains are recognized: northern magmatic domain (nmd) and southern magmatic domain (smd). most analyzed basalts and intermediate volcanic rocks of the nmd have alkaline affinities and depleted to slightly depleted sr-nd isotopic values similar to those derived from an asthenosphere-dominated source. the smd mafic volcanic rocks have a subalkaline character and more enriched sr-nd isotopic signatures, comparable to those derived from a lithospheric source. the felsic volcanic rocks of the smd have lower end values and slightly higher initial 87sr/86sr ratios than the nmd felsic rocks, suggesting a larger crustal contribution in the magma sources. the geochemical and isotopic distinction between nmd and smd felsic rocks could be influenced by the presence of paleozoic metamorphic rocks as basement of the volcanic rocks of the smd. moreover, the compositional distinction between basalts of both domains may correspond to differences in magnitude of extension, the nmd being the one where the extension would have been greater and, consequently, the lithosphere thinner

Abstract: in acute phase leukocytes has been related with higher incidence of major adverse cardiovascular events, (mace) this evidence in ami st elevation after mechanical reperfusion is poor. we study prospectively this group to relationship among mechanical reperfusion, leukocytes and mace. two groups were considered < 10,000/μl or > 10,000/μl; 271 patients had full inclusion criteria in a 5 year period; 93 had < 10,000/μl leukocytes. (8,300 ±1,254/μl) and 178 > 10,000/μl (13,810 + 3,192/μl, p 0.0001). we did not observe any difference between both groups regarding demographic characteristics. at beginning leukocytosis group had higher flow timi 0 - 1 incidence (89% vs 75%, p 0.004) and in - hospital major cardiovascular adverse events (32% vs 14%, p 0.001) and in follow- up (5% vs 2%, p 0.04). logistic regression model include > 60 years - old, diabetes, extensive anterior or inferior infarction, timi flow 0, 1, or 2, cardiogenic shock, leukocytosis and neuthrophilia, had close relationship with mortality (p = 0.0007, rm 1.40, ic 95% 0.410 -4.841). multiple regression that include leukocytosis and neuthrophlia had stronger correlation with major cardiovascular adverse events (mortality, r = 0.34 and cardiogenic shock, r = 0.27) and abnormal timi flow (r = 0.20). conclusion: our results confirm close relationship among leukocitosis, thrombosis and major cardiovascular adverse events and extend this knowledge to acute phase and follow- up in acute myocardial infarction st elevation under percutaneous coronary intervention. these results could be considered as evidence that connecting between endotelial dysfunction (inflammation-atherothrombosis) and cardiovascular disease.
