Abstract: Ground reaction forces (GRF) and electromyographic activity form a part of the descriptive data that characterise the biomechanics of gait. The research of these parameters is important in establishing gait training and understanding the impact of amputation and prosthetic components on movement during the act of walking. Therefore, this case series describes the GRF and electromyographic activity in the gait of transfemoral amputees. A force plate was used to measure GRF, and an electromyographic system monitored the vastus lateralis, biceps femoris, tibialis anterior, and gastrocnemius lateralis muscles of the non-amputated leg. The average vertical and anteroposterior GRF time-curves, average electromyographic activity, and descriptor variables were then analysed. We observed decreases in vertical and anteroposterior GRF magnitudes as well as in anteroposterior GRF descriptor variables during the propulsive phase in the amputated leg. There were increases in phasic muscle activity and co-activation in the non-amputated leg. We concluded that, during walking, the unilateral transfemoral amputees (who were analysed in this case series) developed lower GRF in the amputated limb and a longer period of electromyographic activity in the non-amputated limb.

Abstract: rehabilitation for lower-limb amputees needs to focus on restoration of daily functions and independent locomotion. as gait is reestablished, reorganization of the motor pattern takes place in order to optimize the functions of the locomotor system. biomechanics is a field of study that enables understanding of this reorganization. from such knowledge, appropriate strategies for recovering the autonomy of the means of locomotion can be established. thus, this paper had the aim of reviewing the current status of the biomechanics of locomotion among unilateral transtibial amputees. to achieve this aim, papers written in english or portuguese and published up to 2005 were selected from the cochrane library, pubmed, scientific electronic library online (scielo), literatura latino-americana e do caribe em ciências da saúde (lilacs) and dedalus databases. in cases of transtibial amputation, the absence of plantar flexors negatively affects locomotion. increased absorption and energy generation by the muscles that control the hip joint of the amputated leg can be considered to be the main compensatory strategy developed by unilateral transtibial amputees during gait. factors associated with the characteristics of the amputation, prosthesis and experimental protocol used directly influence the results.

Abstract: to increase industrial production, improve quality and meet consumers? demand, dairy industry has become more demanding regarding raw material suppliers. it is assumed that both milking type and raw milk sampling influence the physico-chemical composition and somatic cell count (scc). to confirm this hypothesis, 180 samples from 30 cows were analysed. a factorial arrangement 2x3 was used, being two sampling types (manual - collecting the first 100ml, and milking machine - samples from the complete milking) and three types of samples (morning, afternoon and pool). the fat and ts (total solids) contents were most influenced either by the type of collection or the the type of sampling. variation between the protein and lactose contents was observed according to the types of sampling. statistical differences (p<0.05) were verified for snf (solids non fat) values according to the milking type. the scc values showed low correlations to the contents of fat, milk and ts and negative correlations to the lactose and snf contents. the results showed the influence of the milking type on the physical chemical composition and milk scc and the importance of standardizing the milk sampling technique.

Abstract: the objective of this work was to characterize fruits of true yellow mombin (spondias mombin l.) genotypes to identify materials of industrial interest and for breeding works. fruits of 30 genotypes were characterized by evaluation of ph, total soluble solid (tss), titratable total acidity (tta), vitamin c, tss/tta rate, total sugars, industrial income, total fruit mass, seed mass, rind mass, pulp mass, and percentage of pulp income. the results (average of three samples) were evaluated by descriptive statistics using central trend (average) and variability of data (standard error and coefficient of variation). multivaried statistical analyses were carried out, by means of grouping and main components techniques. fruits from the genotypes aj04ub, vs07ub, tf25tn, tf26tn, tf29tn, tf30tn and tf31tn presented the best features for processing. grouping analysis showed formation of four genotypes groups showing the existence of genetic variability in the species.

Abstract: the genetic variability of four fish species (pimelodus maculatus, prochilodus lineatus, salminus brasiliensis and steindachneridion scripta) collected in the upper uruguay river basin was analyzed using the rapd technique. a total of 118 amplified fragments was obtained, 11 for p. maculatus, 29 for p. lineatus, 45 for s. brasiliensis and 33 for s. scripta. amplified fragments with monomorphic profile were not found in the studied species, except for s. brasiliensis, which presented seven monomorphic bands for saltinho population. all species showed high levels of genetic variability among individuals.

Abstract: in brazil, public health specialization courses with the characteristics presently adopted by the national school of public health, i.e., short duration and great amplitude, are relatively recent, having started approximately fifteen years ago. in brasilia, nine such courses have been already completed, having, six of them, directive and/or teaching envolvement by the authors. results on a final assessment of one the courses are herewith presented in order to introduce our experience as a contribution to future analogous iniciatives. the assessment was applied to a random sample of students, teachers and coordinators, with the objective of identifying positive and negative appreciations about methodological, operational, administrative and institutional aspects. answers were quite variable, with the highest frequencies scored to field work and to the apprehension on admitting graduates to the health system. such aspects deserve final differentiated discussion.

Abstract: Objective: To report attention changes in a sample of adolescents victims of domestic violence and discuss how this change may be related to an addictive and complex cycle of victimization and abuse. Methods: 78 adolescents went through psychiatric and neuropsychological evaluation. The Kiddie-Sads-Present and Lifetime Version and the Brazilian version of the Childhood Trauma Questionaire (CTQ) were applied. The neuropsychological assessment was conducted by trained professionals using the Wechsler Children’s Global Assessment Scale, 3rd edition-WlSC III. The sample was divided into 3 groups according to the intensity of the reported maltreatment-obtained by the CTQ score (comparison group, moderate degree of abuse and severe maltreatment). Results: The group that showed moderate maltreatment showed better performance in an attention task compared to the comparison group. At the severe maltreatment group, this difference was not observed. Conclusions: Children and adolescents who are victims of maltreatment are more alert to environmental details that surround them as a form of adaptation to defend themselves against potential threats. However, they could react precipitously with inappropriate behavior in some contexts. This can lead to a favorable environment for new and repeated situations of violence, abuse and a perpetuation of this victimization.
