Acculturation and Dietary Change in Mexican-American Immigrant Women  [PDF]

Abstract: Our study explored the process of acculturation among Mexican women living in southwest U.S., and the consequences regarding dietary risk factors associated to health. The cross-sectional study included face to face interviews with 150 migrant women and 150 non-migrant women. Interviews consisted of two non-consecutive 24-hour recalls, and data on anthropometry, acculturation, dietary change and lifestyle. Multiple regression analysis showed that consumption of calories from saturated fat and body mass index (BMI) were significantly higher in migrant women compared to non-migrant women, even after adjusting for other lifestyle and diet related variables. Overall, acculturation seems to be associated with more access to food rather than with a change in consumption of dietary risk components. Furthermore, acculturation was associated positively with socioeconomic status, indicating interplay of socioeconomic and cultural variables related to eating behavior in Mexican immigrant women. Positive association of BMI with acculturation and of acculturation with socioeconomic status suggests that health risk factors among Mexican immigrant women follow similar trends of those of women in their born country.

Abstract: Interindividual differences in activity and expression of the metabolizing enzymes cytochrome P450 (CYP) 3A4 and 3A5 and the multidrug efflux pump P-glycoprotein (P-gp, encoded by ABCB1 gene) contribute considerably to lipid-lowering efficacy of statin treatment in subjects with hypercholesterolemia. Variability in the activity of CYP3A4, CYP3A5 and P-gp could be considered to result from genetic polymorphisms encoding their genes. However, the available data indicate that the frequencies of ABCB1, CYP3A4 and CYP3A5 gene polymorphisms differ significantly across populations. Thus, the aim of the present study was to determine the allelic frequency of three common variants of these genes in Chilean individuals with primary hypercholesterolemia (HC) and controls. A total of 135 unrelated patients (44 ± 7 years old) with diagnosis of hypercholesterolemia (Total cholesterol 240 mg/dL) and 120 normolipidemic healthy controls (40 ± 10 years old; total cholesterol 200 mg/dL) were included in this study. The 3435C>T (MDR1), -290A>G (CYP3A4) and 6986A>G (CYP3A5) gene polymorphisms were analyzed by PCR-RFLP. The genotype distribution for 3435C>T variant of ABCB1 in HC patients (CC: 49%, CT: 37%, TT: 14%) and controls (CC: 41%, CT: 48%, TT: 11%) was comparable (P=0.186). Similarly, the genotype distribution for -290A>G polymorphism of CYP3A4 in HC subjects (AA: 73%, AG: 27%, GG: 0%) and controls (AA: 71%, AG: 29%, GG: 0%) was equivalent (P = 0.863). Finally, the genotype distribution for 6986A>G variant of CYP3A5 in HC individuals (AA: 4%, AG: 41%, GG: 55%) and controls (AA: 4%, AG: 47%, GG: 49%) was similar (P=0.594). The allelic frequencies of 3435C>T (ABCB1), -290A>G (CYP3A4) and 6986A>G (CYP3A5) polymorphisms are similar between Chilean HC patients and controls, and comparable to frequencies found in Asian populations. Polimorfismos de los genes CYP3A4, CYP3A5 y ABCB1 se han asociado a variaciones en la respuesta a fármacos hipolipemiantes, como las estatinas; principales medicamentos utilizados para disminuir los niveles plasmáticos de colesterol (CT). Sin embargo, la frecuencia de estas variantes genéticas puede variar entre las poblaciones. Efecto del Propóleos Chileno sobre el Metabolismo de Glucosa en Ratones Diabéticos Effect of Chilean Propolis on Glucose Metabolism in Diabetic Mice

Abstract: En el presente estudio se evaluó el efecto del propóleos sobre el metabolismo de la glucosa en ratones C57/BL-6 con diabetes mellitus tipo 2 inducida por dieta alta en grasa. Se midieron los cambios en las concentraciones séricas de lípidos, glucosa e insulina, y el efecto sobre la captación de 2-deoxi-[2,6-3H]-D-glucosa, síntesis de [14C]-glicógeno y descarboxilación de [U-14C]-D-glucosa inducida por insulina en músculo aislado. Los resultados muestran que en ratones diabéticos, el tratamiento con propóleos (150 mg/kg/día) reduce los niveles de insulina e índice HOMA (P<0.05). También disminuyó la obesidad abdominal de estos animales (P<0.05). Por otro lado, no modificó las concentraciones plasmáticas de glucosa, colesterol total y triglicéridos. Se observó también que la captación de 2-deoxi-[2,6-3H]-D-glucosa, síntesis de [14C]-glicógeno y descarboxilación de [U-14C]-D-glucosa inducida por insulina en músculo sóleo de ratones tratados con propóleos fue significativamente superior al grupo control (P<0.05). En resumen, nuestros datos confirman que el propóleos es capaz de modular el metabolismo de glucosa en ratones C57/BL-6 con diabetes mellitus tipo 2 inducida por dieta alta en grasa. Los datos obtenidos constituyen un importante antecedente que avala el posible uso del propóleos como fuente de polifenoles con actividad antidiabetogénica. In the current study, we investigated the effect of propolis on diabetic mice undergoing propolis treatment (150 mg/kg/day) for a 6 week period. We also evaluated serum lipids, glucose, insulin levels and the effect on glucose uptake of 2-deoxy-D-[2,6-3H] glucose, [14C]-glycogen synthesis and [U-14C]-D-glucose decarboxylation induced by insulin in muscle tissue. Our results show that treatment with propolis (150 mg/kg/day) reduced insulin and HOMA index (P<0.05). Propolis also lowered abdominal obesity (P<0.05). No effects over serum glucose, total cholesterol and triglycerides levels were observed. We also observed that uptake of 2-deoxy-D-[2,6-3H] glucose, [14C]-glycogen synthesis and [U-14C]-D-glucose decarboxylation induced by insulin in soleus muscle of mice treated with propolis were significantly greater than control group (P<0.05). In summary, our data establishes that propolis modulates glucose metabolism. This result constitutes important data indicating that propolis can be used as a polyphenols source with antidiabetogenic activity.

Abstract: En contraste con los enormes esfuerzos realizados por caracterizar la fauna y flora de Costa Rica, con excepción de algunos registros aislados, muy poco se sabe sobre las sanguijuelas (Annelida: Clitellata) en este país. En este trabajo, presentamos la redescripción de una especie terrestre muy poco conocida: Cylicobdella costaricae, caracterizando su morfología externa e interna; esta última se mantenía completamente desconocida hasta la fecha. Adicionalmente, presentamos la primera lista de especies de sanguijuelas para Costa Rica con un total de 12 taxones registrados en las 7 provincias del país. Se incluye una breve descripción de su morfología, fotografías y localidades para cada taxón. Los registros que presentamos son el resultado del estudio de los ejemplares depositados en el Museo de Zoología de la Universidad de Costa Rica así como de recolectas recientes. Finalmente, incluimos una clave taxonómica para la identificación de las especies de sanguijuelas de Costa Rica. In contrast to the enormous efforts made to characterize the fauna and flora from Costa Rica, except for a few isolated records, very little is known about leeches (Annelida: Clitellata) in the country. In this paper, we present the redescription of a poorly known terrestrial leech: Cylicobdella costaricae, characterizing its external and internal morphology, the latter, completely unknown to date. In addition, we report the first list of leech species for Costa Rica, including in total 12 taxa with records from the 7 provinces of the country. We provide a brief description of the leech morphology, pictures and localities for each taxon. The information shown here is the result of the study of both, specimens deposited at the Museo de Zoología of the Universidad de Costa Rica and the new collections. Finally, we provide a taxonomic key for species identification.
Aperiodicity in one-way Markov cycles and repeat times of large earthquakes in faults

Abstract: A common use of Markov Chains is the simulation of the seismic cycle in a fault, i.e. as a renewal model for the repetition of its characteristic earthquakes. This representation is consistent with Reid's elastic rebound theory. Here it is proved that in {\it any} one-way Markov cycle, the aperiodicity of the corresponding distribution of cycle lengths is always lower than one. This fact concurs with observations of large earthquakes in faults all over the world.
Dual maps and the Dunford-Pettis property

Abstract: We characterize the points of $\left\|\cdot\right\|$-$w^*$ continuity of dual maps, turning out to be the smooth points. We prove that a Banach space has the Schur property if and only if it has the Dunford-Pettis property and there exists a dual map that is sequentially $w$-$w$ continuous at $0$. As consequence, we show the existence of smooth Banach spaces on which the dual map is not $w$-$w$ continuous at $0$.

Abstract: a series of (e)-2-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-3-arylacrylonitriles was synthesized by microwave assisted knoevenagel condensation under solvent-free conditions from the corresponding 2-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)acetonitrile and aromatic aldehydes with electrondonating/electron-withdrawing groups. the reaction times were considerably short and the products obtained in moderate yields (50 to 75%) and good purity. the configuration of the acrylonitrile double bond could not be established by regular nmr methods. however, theoretical studies suggest that the e isomer is more stable than z, which is in good agreement with some experimental evidences.

Abstract: in this paper results from a research in micromachining of biocompatible polymers are presented. the paper describes the fabrication process for biocompatible polymers components and shows the accuracy levels and the dimensional scales that can be achieved with a kern evo micromachining center. furthermore the paper also shows the results obtained from a microcutting test using carbide end mills of 100 microns diameter on medical-grade pmma (polymethyl methacrylate) specimens to determine the parameters that minimize the burrs size. to characterize the final surfaces state and the condition of the tools, optical and electronic microscopy techniques were used. the results for the first machining tests show that to control the dimensional characteristics of the component, aspects like the setting depth of cut, the selected fastening method and the alignment tolerance must be watched over; even the environmental conditions of the place where the machining center operates must be also controlled.
