En la pampa los diablos andan sueltos: Demonios danzantes de la fiesta del santuario de La Tirana In the Pampa the Devils are roaming loose: Dancing Devils in the Feast of the Shrine of La Tirana
Alberto Díaz Araya
Revista musical chilena , 2011,
The article deals with those dancers clad as devils in the feast of La Tirana who are known locally as loose devils. Both the ethnohistoric components and the symbolic universe of their attributes as dancers are studied. Social, cultural and musical data about the devils are presented. The autonomy of the dancers is outlined as their main feature as they do not belong to any of the religious groups attending the feast at this important shrine in Northern Chile.

Abstract: this article studies the pressure and conflict processes concerning collective spaces associated with settled communities in putre (foothills zone of arica). starting from documentation of diverse national, regional and local files, we review the conflict elements of the implementation of liberal politics boosted by the chilean state after the annexation post war of the pacific (1880) until the consolidation of the territory now considered private property of the chilean state (1935). we also examine the processes of control over territorial space based on the constitution of private property and the incorporation of the fiscal system registry, as well as the reactions provoked in the citizens and indigenous population about these influences. we give emphasis to the capacity for reaction, and the use and performative interpretation of state politics in the use and ownership of community spaces.

Said Barahona,Jorge; Díaz Araya,Alberto;
Aisthesis , 2011, DOI: 10.4067/S0718-71812011000200003
Abstract: the main objective of the following article is to analyze the implications inferred in the ritual practice of the carnival in a period of economic, social and political crisis (1929-1940). considering the contraposition between the irrationality of popular culture and the rationality of the culture of the free market, in this decade the popular ritual of carnival will be materialized as an expression of sarcastic and mocking humor, a climax of euphoria that has caused symbolic attacks against both the authority and idols. this makes the carnival a dangerous occurrence that must be kept under surveillance, with rules and disciplines. in relation to the above, this research will analyze the carnival as an instrument of power, instrumentalized like a simulacrum.
