Abstract: Com os objetivos de avaliar o desenvolvimento e a qualidade de fuste de procedências e progênies mexicanas de Pinus maximinoi e estimar a varia o genética passível de ser explorada em trabalhos de melhoramento, o experimento foi instalado na Floresta Estadual de Angatuba (SP), analisando-se o desempenho em altura, diametro à altura do peito (DAP), retid o de fuste, e número e diametro dos ramos. Os resultados, aos 11 anos do plantio, apresentaram varia es significativas entre procedências apenas para altura. Entre progênies dentro de procedências, foram detectadas varia es significativas em todos os caracteres, indicando a possibilidade de se obter ganhos genéticos mediante sele o neste nível. Qualquer das procedências testadas de P. maximinoi pode ser recomendada para plantio comercial na regi o de Angatuba. O seu desempenho foi semelhante ao de P. oocarpa usado como testemunha. As estimativas de varia o genética indicaram que a maior parte é encontrada entre plantas dentro de progênies e a maior herdabilidade encontra-se entre progênies. Isto indica que maiores ganhos genéticos poder o ser obtidos mediante sele o de progênies seguida de sele o dentro de progênies. A melhor resposta à sele o foi estimada para DAP, com possibilidade de ganhos da ordem de 8,4% aos 11 anos.The objectives of the experiment were to evaluate growth and stem quality in Mexican provenances and progenies of Pinus maximinoi and to estimate genetic variation for breeding purposes. It was established at Angatuba State Forest, in the State of S o Paulo, and the analyses involved performances in height growth, diameter at breast height (DBH), stem straightness and number and diameter of branches. Only in height growth there was significant variance among provenances detected at eleven years old. Among progenies within provenances, significant variations were detected in all traits showing possibilities of genetic gains by selection in this level. P. maximinoi from any of the provenances represented in this study can be recommended for commercial plantation in Angatuba region. Its performance was comparable to that of P. oocarpa used as control species. The estimates of genetic variation indicated that most of them are distributed among trees within progenies and the highest heritability was observed at progeny level. The results suggest that the greatest genetic gains can be reached through progenies selection followed by selection within progenies. The greatest response to selection was estimated in DBH with potential gain in the order of 8.4% at eleven years old.

Desde a década de 1960,o Instituto Florestal de S o Paulo vem desenvolvendoestudos pioneiros em conserva o ex situ dealgumas espécies nativas amea adas e de interesseecon mico, como, por exemplo, Aspidospermapolyneuron, visando à conserva o, ao melhoramentogenético e ao conhecimento do seu comportamentosilvicultural. Em 1964 foi implantado um experimentocom duas procedências de A. polyneuron: Bauru(SP) e Alvorada do Sul (PR), em uma Unidade deConserva o do Instituto Florestal, em Bauru/SP.Foi utilizado o delineamento de blocos ao acaso,com nove plantas por parcela, espa amento 3 x 3 me seis repeti es. Em 2006, foram avaliados odiametro à altura do peito (DAP, cm), altura total(HT, m), forma do fuste (F), volume cilíndricoindividual (VCi, m3), volume cilíndrico por hectare(VCha, m3 ha-1) e sobrevivência (S, %). Since the 1960 decade,the Forestry Institute of S o Paulo has beendeveloping pioneering studies of ex situconservation of some endangered native treespecies and with economic interests, as for example,Aspidosperma polyneuron aiming the conservation,the tree breeding and the knowledge of thesilvicultural behavior. In 1964 an experiment withtwo provenances was implanted: A. polyneuron,Bauru (SP) and A. polyneuron, Alvorada do Sul(PR) in a Conservation Unit of the Forest Institute,in Bauru/SP. The trial was established in acomplete randomized block design with nine treesin square plots, spacing 3 x 3 m and with sixreplications. In 2006, the variables were evaluated:diameter at breast height (DBH, cm), total height(HT, m), stem form (SF), individual cylindricalvolume (VCi, m3), cylindrical volume per hectare(VCha, m3 ha-1) and survival (%). Abstract: No Brasil, plantios de espécies nativas visando à explora o comercial s o raros, devido ao crescimento lento e à falta de informa es silviculturais e oferta de sementes e mudas de boa qualidade. Dessa forma, no ano de 1964 foi implantado umexperimento visando avaliar os efeitos do espa amento no desenvolvimento de Poecilanthae parviflora, que é uma espécie de crescimento lento, na Esta o Ecológica de Bauru, SP. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi em blocos ao acaso, comcinco tratamentos e cinco repeti es. Os tratamentos constituíram-se dos seguintes espa amentos: 1,0 m x 1,0 m; 1,5 m x 1,5 m; 2,0 m x 2,0 m; 2,5 m x 2,5 m e 3,0 m x 3,0 m, tendo sido avaliados o diametro à altura do peito, altura total, volume individual, volume por hectare e a sobrevivência. Os resultados demonstraram que os espa amentos n o influenciaram asobrevivência, mas produziram efeitos no diametro à altura do peito, altura total, volume individual e volume por hectare. Com o aumento do espa amento, houvemaior incremento nos valores das três primeiras variáveis, ocorrendo o inverso na última. Possivelmente, o uso de espa amentos iniciais mais adensados e o emprego de desbastes seletivos e sucessivos resultariamemmaior propor o de madeira e melhor qualidade.In Brazil, planting of native species aiming at the commercial exploration is rare, due to the slow growth, the lack of silvicultural information and supply of seeds and seedling of superior quality. On account of this, in 1964 an experiment aiming to evaluate the effects of planting spacings on growing of Poecilanthae parviflora, which is a species of slow growth, was implanted in the Ecological Station of Bauru, SP. The trial was established in a complete-randomized block-design, with five treatments and five repetitions. The treatments consisted of the following spacings: 1.0 m x 1.0 m; 1.5 m x 1.5 m; 2.0 m x 2.0 m; 2.5 m x 2.5 m and 3.0 m x 3.0 m, which were evaluated at the breast height diameter, total height, individual volume, volume for hectare and the survival. The results demonstrated that the diameter at breast height, individual volume and volume for hectare has been influenced by the spacing. With the increase of the spacing, it had greater increment in the values of the three first variables, the opposite occurred in the last one. The survival however was not influenced by the spacing. Possibly, the use of more dense initial spacing and the use of selective and successive thinning can produce higher proportion of wood and better quality.
Genetic variation among and within provenances and progenies of Corymbia maculata (Hook.) K.D. Hill and L.A.S. Johnson, in Pederneiras, SP

Abstract: This study aimed to estimate genetic parameters and variation in a provenance-progeny test of C. maculata (ex Eucalyptus maculata Hook.), conducted at Pederneiras Experimental Station, in S o Paulo Forest Institute. The test was based on 21 open-pollination progenies from provenance Woondum St. Forest and 17 from provenance Wondai St. Forest, both in Australia. A compact family block design was adopted consisting of ten blocks, six plants per straight-line plot and two outer border rows, with spacing 3 x 2 m. Traits assessed included diameter at breast height (DBH), height, volume, form and survival rate at age 4 and 21 years. Significant differences were detected only at age 4 between provenances for DAP and height and among progenies for DAP, height and volume. The coefficient of genetic variation was higher for all traits at age 21. The heritability coefficient at the progeny level ( ) was also higher at age 21 and ranged from 0.21 for volume to 0.40 for height, indicating that genetic progress can be achieved through selection of the best progenies. Genetic correlations were high between traits within and between age categories, showing that potential genetic gains can be achieved through indirect, early selection. Results indicate that considerable gains can be made if high selection intensity is applied among and within progenies, with values ranging from 12.48% for height to 21.77% for volume.
Synthesis of Nitrogen-doped Titania by Solvothermal Reactions in Alcohols

Abstract: Nitrogen-doped titania nanoparticles were obtained by the homogeneous precipitation in hexamethylenetetraminetitanium trichloride-alcohol aqueous solutions at 90 ℃ followed by heating at 190 ℃. Anatase, rutile and brookite were obtained, where the crystallite size, specific surface area and color greatly changed as 5~50 nm, 20~200 m2/g and light gray to yellow, depending on the solvent and pH. The products after calcination were yellow, indicating doping with nitrogen ion. All colored titania showed photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation for the oxidative decomposition of nitrogen monoxide in air. Especially, the nanoparticles of anatase type nitrogen-doped titania obtained using methanol aqueous solution showed excellent photocatalytic activity.

Degradation of Phosphorylated p53 by Viral Protein-ECS E3 Ligase Complex

Abstract: p53-signaling is modulated by viruses to establish a host cellular environment advantageous for their propagation. The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) lytic program induces phosphorylation of p53, which prevents interaction with MDM2. Here, we show that induction of EBV lytic program leads to degradation of p53 via an ubiquitin-proteasome pathway independent of MDM2. The BZLF1 protein directly functions as an adaptor component of the ECS (Elongin B/C-Cul2/5-SOCS-box protein) ubiquitin ligase complex targeting p53 for degradation. Intringuingly, C-terminal phosphorylation of p53 resulting from activated DNA damage response by viral lytic replication enhances its binding to BZLF1 protein. Purified BZLF1 protein-associated ECS could be shown to catalyze ubiquitination of phospho-mimetic p53 more efficiently than the wild-type in vitro. The compensation of p53 at middle and late stages of the lytic infection inhibits viral DNA replication and production during lytic infection, suggesting that the degradation of p53 is required for efficient viral propagation. Taken together, these findings demonstrate a role for the BZLF1 protein-associated ECS ligase complex in regulation of p53 phosphorylated by activated DNA damage signaling during viral lytic infection.

Abstract: Although an ovariectomy is the routine approach used to study the role of ovarian hormones on respiratory control, the results have often been contradictory. We tested the hypothesis that the ventilatory response to hypoxia is modified by the age at which the ovariectomy is performed. Female rats were ovariectomized either atan early (3 weeks old, i.e., prepubertal) or late (10 weeks old, i.e., adult) stage, and ventilation was then assessed at 12 weeks of age using whole-body plethysmography. The control group included sham-operated rats that had undergone the same surgical procedure but were not ovariectomized. Independent of the age at which surgery was performed, ovariectomy significantly decreased circulating progesterone and 17-b-estradiol levels without re-ducing them below their detection threshold. Despite that decrease, there was no difference in baseline minute ventilation or in the ventilatory response to hypoxia (FiO2 = 12%, 20 min; expressed as the percentage of increase from baseline) between ovariectomized and shamoperated rats. These results suggest that ovariectomy at either a young or at an adult age is insufficient to completely suppress circulating hormones and disrupt the regulation of ventilation.
Crossing and Passing: Discursive Borders in Off Shoring

Abstract: As a term in popular discourse, globalisation marks a celebrated openness of global spaces. Critics of globalisation argue that a global economy creates borders that are more discursive than territorial. A current challenge to globalisation scholars is reaching an understanding of how the many configurations of context, space, time and place created by globalisation result in new ways of organizing space and identity. Based on rich ethnographic data from an off shore call centre in Morocco and informed by interdisciplinary research on space, this paper bridges the links between territorial and discursive borders in the global social network of off shoring. Metaphorical spaces come about when dynamic configurations of contexts at territorial borders relate or are made to relate. Call centre agents use metaphorical spaces to fix the meaning of space. In this article, I identify two different metaphorical spaces: crossing and passing that help agents organize and negotiate their spaces and subsequently their identities and power relations. I suggest that agents negotiate place through space. This crossing takes place as they imbricate the Moroccan context of “L’hrig” within the continuum of the call centre. I also suggest that agents negotiate space through place. This passing occurs via the imbrication of metaphorical space of polyvalence. Crossing and passing inscribe not only a literal meaning of “movement” and “disembodiment”, but also the nuanced meaning of “movement and staying” and “disembodiment and re-embodiment” in a place where conjunctions of space, time, place and context collide. The creation of metaphorical spaces of crossing and passing suggests modification of our understanding of diaspora: attaining the diasporic space can no longer depend on physical borders alone; it must also rely on discursive borders.
Affine Transformations of It Diffusions and their Transition Densities

Abstract: For a given It diffusion, we derive the forward Kolmogorov equation (FKE) associated with the adjoint operator of the infinitesimal generator of an affine transformation of the given It diffusion. The fundamental solution obtained by solving the FKE is, in fact, the transition density of the transformed diffusion. Moreover, we prove that the transition density can be represented in terms of a product of two functions, a Jacobian term and a composition of the transition density of the given It diffusion and the inverse of the transformation. Finally, we present an application of our results in parameter estimation in commodity markets in which the commodity prices are assumed to follow an extended Black-Scholes model.
