Safety Assessment and Potential Anti-Inflammatory Effect of Ethanolic Extract of Syzygium aromaticum in Albino Rats  [PDF]

Abstract: The present study was undertaken to investigate the effect of the ethanolic extract of Syzygium aromaticum to albino rats. Forty eight Albino rats were employed to test the safety and the anti-inflammatory effect of the extract. Safety of the extract was examined on experimental animal’s model at three dose levels of the extract orally in daily doses for three weeks. Effects of S. aromaticum on rats revealed no significant effect on biochemical or haematological parameters. The anti-inflammatory effect of the extract was tested in four equal groups; groups 1 and 2 were treated with 250 and 500 mg/kg of the extract, respectively, group 3 was treated with indomethacine and group 4 was the untreated control. Carrageenan was used as an acute form inducer of inflammation. Indomethacine, the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), was used as a reference compound. New Non-Invasive Index for Detecting Esophageal Varices in Patients with Liver Cirrhosis  [PDF]

Abstract: Introduction: Many studies have shown that clinical, biochemical and ultrasonographic parameter are predictive of the presence and grading of esophageal varices. Aim of Study: Validation of a noninvasive test called P2/MS and its comparison with other noninvasive tests for the detection of high risk esophageal varices. Patients and Methods: We prospectively enrolled 125 consecutive patients with liver cirrhosis. Complete blood count [CBC], Platelet count by direct method, Liver functions [serum bilirubin, AST, ALT, prothrombin time and concentration and serum albumin], kidney functions, hepatitis markers for B & C, abdominal ultrasonography and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy were done for each patient. Calculation of P2/MS [Platelet count)2/{monocyte fraction (%) × segmented neutrophil fraction (%)], API [age-platelet index], APRI [AST-to-platelet ratio index], SPRI [spleen-to-platelet ratio index], ASPRI [age-spleen-to-platelet ratio index] scores and correlating the different scores with the grade of esophageal varices found on upper endoscopy. Results: During processing of our patient’s data, we found certain relation between segmented neutrophils, monocytes, platelet count, total bilirubin and the degree of esophageal varices for the detection of high risk varices and a new equation was formulated and we called it P2/MS-B. In predicting high risk esophageal varices HREV, the area under the curve for this new variable was [0.909, 95% confidence interval 0.858 - 0.961, p = 0.000] which was significantly higher than all the other variables including P2/MS for the detection of HREV. The sensitivity of the new equation for the detection of HREV is 85.3%, the specificity is 83.1%, the positive predictive value is 87.9%, the negative predicative value is 86.0 % and the overall accuracy of the test is 85.6%. Conclusion: A newly detected noninvasive variable for detecting HREV may reliably screen liver cirrhosis patients for HREV and avoid unnecessary endoscopy in low risk patients.
The Influence of Think-Pair-Share (TPS) on Improving Students’ Oral Communication Skills in EFL Classrooms  [PDF]

Abstract:
This research aimed to investigate the influence of think-pair-share (TPS) on improving students’ oral communication skills in EFL classrooms. For this purpose, the researcher interviewed the EFL teachers who taught “English for Workplace” at the ELC An-Najah National University and observed students’ classroom interaction. After the analysis of the collected data of the study, it was obviously noticed that think-pair-share strategy plays a positive role in improving students’ oral communicative skills, creating a cooperative learning environment and enhancing students’ motivation to learn better. Furthermore, students enrolled in the faculties of applied sciences responded better than students enrolled the faculties of human sciences; similar responses were shown from students of higher academic level. In the light of these findings, the researcher recommended increasing the number of activities related to think-pair—in the English textbooks and in the teaching pedagogies for the sake of improving students’ oral communication skills.
Egg Yield and Quality in Laying Hens Fed Diets Containing Black Cumin Seed and/or White Wormwood Leaves

Abstract: Laying hens were fed diets containing either black cumin seed or white wormwood leaves or the combination of the two additives and the effects on egg production and egg quality characteristics were determined. Final body weights were significantly increased in the birds fed the diet with 1% black cumin seed and in those fed the diet with 0.5% of both black cumin seed and white wormwood leaves. Feed intake was numerically lower after the feeding of the diets with 1% white wormwood leaves. Egg production was not significantly influenced by dietary treatment but group-mean egg production was lowered in the hens fed the diet with 1% black cumin seed. Feed conversion efficiency was significantly decreased by the diet containing 1% white wormwood leaves and by the diet with the combination of 1% of black cumin seed and 1% white wormwood leaves. The diet containing 0.5% black cumin seed plus 0.5% white wormwood leaves also significantly decreased feed conversion. Egg weight, shape index, albumen height, Haugh unit, shell thickness and yolk color were not significantly affected by the dietary treatments. The major finding of this study may be that dietary white wormwood improved feed efficiency in laying hens whereas black cumin seed did not.

Abstract:

Chromium is found in all phases of the environment, including air, water and soil. The contamination of environment by chromium has become a major area of concern. Chromium effluent is highly toxic to plant and is harmful to their growth and development. In present study, a pot experiment was carried out to assess the phytotoxicity of chromium in Hibiscus esculentus at different concentration (0.5, 2.5, 5, 10, 25, 50 and 100 mg·kg-1) of chromium metal. The phytotoxic effect of chromium was observed on seed germination, seedling growth, seedling vigor index, chlorophyll content and tolerance indices of Hibiscus esculentus. All results when compared with control show that chromium metal adversely affects the growth of Hibiscus esculentus by reducing seed germination and decreasing seedling growth. The toxic effects of chromium metal to seed germination and young seedling are arranged in order of inhibition as: 0.5 > 2.5 > 5 > 10

Abstract:
An-Najah National University (ANU), a Palestinian non-governmental public university located in Nablus in the northern part of Palestine, serves 17,807 students with 1020 professors in 11 faculties, and has been striving to integrate technology in its systems to keep up with the global flux of change in all aspects of life. For 10 years An-Najah has pursued the integration of e-learning in residential, blended and fully online delivery. Following a brief summary of the history of An-Najah National University, change management strategies are featured, highlighting specific successful techniques. The case study concludes a description of the change management model that emerged in addition to indicators of a great impact on students’ satisfaction and staff members’ participation ratios.

Abstract: Microgrid is a new concept in power generation. The Microgrid concept assumes a cluster of loads and micro sources operating as a single controllable system that provides both power and heat to its local area. Not much is known about Microgrid behavior as a whole system. Some models exist which describe the components of a Microgrid. In this paper, model of Microgrids with steady state and their transient responses to changing inputs are presented. Current models of a fuel cell, microturbines, wind turbine and solar cell have been discussed. Finally a complete model built of Microgrid including the power sources, their power electronics, and a load and mains model in MATLAB/Simulink is presented.
Serum Protein Levels and Hematological Values in Rats Fed a Diet Containing Black Cumin Seed

Abstract: In this study with rats, the influence of a dietary black cumin seed on both serum proteins and blood cell counts was determined. Rats were fed a diet either without or with 15% black cumin seed for 9 weeks. At the end of the experiment, body weights were similar for the two groups of rats. The diet containing black cumin seed slightly but significantly, lowered the concentration of plasma total proteinsbut did not affect the concentrations of albumin, globulins and hemoglobin. The numbers of white and red blood cells were not affected by black cumin seed in the diet and so was the the composition of white blood cells in terms of neutrophils, lymphocytes and monocytes. After comparing the results of this study with those of studies found in the literature data, it is concluded that black cumin seed has clear effects on serum proteins and blood cells only in rats that are exposed to toxic agents.

Abstract: Well-defined homo glycopolymer/montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposite (gly1) was prepared successfully by the “grafting from” technique from the modified surface of MMT via surface initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) of 3-O-methacryloyl-1,2:5,6-di-O-isopropylidene-α-D-glucofuranose (gly) in the presence of Cu(I)Br/ bi- pyridyl at 90?C in xylene. Well-defined diblock copolymers (gly2, gly3, gly4 and gly5) were also synthesized via the same technique by using comonomers of methylmethacrylate (MMA) or styrene (St) with glycomonomer (gly) using the same catalytic system. The formed nanocomposites showed both intercalated and exfoliated structures, as judged by XRD and TEM measurements. Further analyses were performed on such nanocomposites to confirm their formation such as TGA and DSC. The structures of the attached polymers to MMT were characterized by 1H NMR.
