Framework for Extensible Application Testing  [PDF]

Abstract: In recent years large corporations as well as smaller commercial enterprises have begun to devote increased attention to software testing and software quality. This paper introduces a novel tool—the Framework for Extensible Application Testing (FEAT), implemented by the author and applicable for automatic generation and execution of test cases. The paper discusses system requirements, design, architecture and modes of operation. It also contains a detailed comparison of the FEAT framework with existing test environments, focusing in particular on the STAF/STAX framework. The final section is devoted to experimental research into the applicability and efficiency of the presented tools in various projects and configurations, as reflected by quality metrics.
Antioxidant Properties, Acrylamide Content and Sensory Quality of Ginger Cakes with Different Formulations

Abstract: The antioxidant capacity, phenolic acids profile, acrylamide contents and sensory quality of ginger cakes formulated on dark and brown rye flours according to the traditional formula (type 1 and type 2), and on the mixed white wheat flour with dark and brown rye flours due to the currently used formulation (type 3 and type 4), were studied. The antioxidant capacity of the ginger batters and cakes was investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and against 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryhydrazyl radical (DPPH). Phenolic acids profile was determined by HPLC whilst acrylamide by GC-MS method. The antioxidant capacity of traditional ginger cakes determined by CV and DPPH assays was higher when compared to those formulated on white wheat and rye mixed flours. All types of ginger cakes showed higher antioxidant capacity and phenolic acids content in relation to the respective batters. The higher content of acrylamide by 42 and 24% was noted in traditional ginger cakes of type 1 and type 2 as compared to that noted in ginger cakes of type 3 and type 4 (49±4 μg/kg). The overall sensory quality of traditional ginger cakes formulated on dark and brown rye flours (type 1 and type 2) was higher than of those formulated on white wheat and rye mixed flours (type 3 and type 4). The results of this study indicate the possibility of modulating the sensory and antioxidant properties of ginger cakes by the type and quality of flours in the formulation as well as by batter preparation and baking process.
Effects of Aronia melanocarpa polyphenols on oxidative metabolism and apoptosis of neutrophils from obese and non-obese individuals

Abstract: Reactive oxygen species are postulated to be involved in systemic inflammation and oxidative stress in patients with obesity. Activated polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs) generate extremely high amounts of reactive oxygen species, but these are normally targeted at pathogens inside intracellular phagosomes. The same beneficial antimicrobial functions, if not controlled, contribute to the tissue damaging effects of inflammatory reactions. The evidence from conventional epidemiology strongly implies fruits and vegetables in protection against oxidative stress. In our study, the in vitro effects of Aronia melanocarpa juice on oxidative metabolism and apoptosis of neutrophils from obese and non-obese individuals has been investigated. We tested 15 obese patients (aged 45 ±9 years, women, BMI = 34 ±4.9 kg/m2). Nine healthy subjects (BMI = 22.2 ±1.6 kg/m2) were enrolled as controls. Neutrophils were isolated and oxidant production, in response to phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate, was characterized by using luminol dependent chemiluminescence (CL) and flow cytometric dichlorofluorescin oxidation assay. Caspase-3 activity, a marker of apoptosis execution, in human neutrophils, measured by a cleavage of the fluorogenic substrate Ac-DEVD-AMC. Additional experiments to assess the direct toxic effect of the aronia polyphenols were also carried out. Neutrophils from obese individuals had a significantly higher H2O2 production and CL response compared to controls (p < 0.05). The oxidative metabolism of PMNs was decreased by aronia juice treatment in both of groups, obese and non-obese individuals. The caspase-3 activity depended on the time of aronia juice treatment and was markedly increased in phorbol-treated cells incubated with polyphenols for 24 hours. This natural product exert beneficial effects in cells and may, therefore, be useful in the treatment of obesity disorders.

Microstructural and thermal analysis of Cu-Ni-Sn-Zn alloys by means of SEM and DSC techniques

Abstract: Purpose: The urgent need to find new, non toxic, high temperature solders caused the abundance of research on multicomponent systems, so as to find new materials that could substitute lead-containing solders.Design/methodology/approach: In the paper Cu-Ni-Sn-Zn alloys were studied by differential scanning calorymetry (DSC) in argon atmosphere using a heating rate of 10 Kmin-1 and a cooling rate of 15 Kmin-1. There were determined heat effects and start and finish temperature of phase transitions. Each sample was heated and cooled twice. At the second run, Zn concentration was smaller (as Zn is a volatile component).Findings: Zn influence on phase transformations was established. For the second run, when Zn activity is smaller, heats and temperature of transformations are higher.Research limitations/implications: These experimental results, combined with other thermodynamic properties of the studied alloy, enable phase diagram calculation in the frame of the COST action MP0602.Practical implications: Phase diagrams of the studied alloys allow finding appropriate solder materials.Originality/value: The paper presents an influence of zinc on temperature and heats of transformations in Cu-Ni-Sn-Zn alloys and the microstructure of these alloys.
Strategic analysis of PKM Duda SA. on Polish meat market with the application of BCG growth-share matrix

Abstract: The main goal of this paper was to examine the market position of one leading meat processing enterprise PKM Duda SA. on the domestic meat market. The assessment of the activity portfolio on its three strategic units was undertaken with the usage of BCG matrix. The PKM Duda SA. was chosen for the study because: a) processes more than 20 tons of slaughter per week, b) is located in the country of origin, c) exists on Warsaw Stock Exchange Market, d) preserves continuity of its database in Monitor Polski B”. The analysis proved that all three examined strategic units have different market shares and operate on markets of a different acceleration. The highest income rate brings the meat processing unit (B), the lowest slaughter unit (A). The market position of PKM Duda SA. can be improved when a retail trade unit (B) moves away from question marks into stars. Although BCG matrix draws a fast and a complex strategic situation, is not free from disadvantages. That is the reason why further, also portfolio, analysis should be im-plemented.
Evaluation of Flavonoid Contents and Antioxidant Capacity of the Aerial Parts of Common and Tartary Buckwheat Plants

Abstract: The analysis of major and minor flavonoids, and antioxidant capacity of stems, leaves, flowers, unripe seeds and ripe seeds of common and tartary buckwheat plants collected during different growth periods was addressed in this study. The highest rutin contents were observed in flowers and leaves collected from common and tartary buckwheat at early flowering as well as flowering and seed formation states. A low quercetin contents were found in all studied aerial part of buckwheat plants. Quercitrin (quercetin-3-rhamnoside) was only found in flowers collected at different growth periods while flavone C-glucosides were accumulated preferentially only in unripe seeds collected from common buckwheat at an early flowering state. The rank of antioxidant capacity provided for aerial parts of common and tartary buckwheat at early flowering state was as follows: flowers > leaves > stems. The highest contribution of rutin to the antioxidant capacity of the aerial parts of common and tartary buckwheat was found for stems followed by leaves, flowers and unripe seeds. The results demonstrate that flowers from common and tartary buckwheat collected at early flowering as well as flowering and seed formation states have the future potential to be a useful food ingredient.

Legal aspects of Polish Tax and Social Security in Agriculture

Abstract: In the paper are describing legal aspects of treatment of farming sector in the tax and social security system in Poland. Tax System in Polish Agriculture is an integral part of Polish Tax System. Most taxes paid by farmers are property taxes, which supplied the budget of main local authority in Poland (municipality). In some cases farmers pay also personal income tax and value added tax like those, who run specific agricultural production as well individual farmers who operate through a limited liability company are subject to corporate income tax. The social security fund for farmers (known as KRUS) was speared in 1990 from the social security system (ZUS). Farmers receive similar benefits with regard to health care, education, and social welfare although the contributions into the farmers system are lower then under the ZUS system.
