Ciência & Educa??o (Bauru) , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-73132005000200012
Abstract: in this ontological reflection, science is identified as a thought coordination tool necessary to everyone, although not available to most people. the scientific spirit is presented as related to the overcoming of support proceedings from attachment to the lasting explanations and to the outside government. the efforts for approximation to school science are pointed out as a challenge to be present at all educational levels, from primary school to graduate studies.
A matemática, os matemáticos, as crian?as e alguns sonhos educacionais
Ruiz, Adriano Rodrigues;
Ciência & Educa??o (Bauru) , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-73132002000200006
Abstract: mathematics, mathematicians, children and some educational dreams this paper is a consequence of our concern with the fragility imposed by mathematical illiteracy on adult society. based on piagetian researches, children are identified as active and competent learners. the possibilities for new mathematical cultures opened by the computer availability are also discussed. in this context, the narrow view of mathematics as a "quantity science" is pointed out as an obstacle for non-mathematicians to access the still little explored possibilities.

The main objective of this research is to investigate the accounting information management through the technical provisions constituted by insurance companies as a response to the economic and tax regulations of the Brazilian insurance market. The accounts of the technical provisions enable discretionary accounting choices, and the uncertainty around its estimative provide significant opportunities for the accounting information management, aiming at achieving two purposes: i) the improvement of the solvency parameters and ii) the reduction of tax payments. The specific accruals approach was applied on a sample of 360 observations from 60 insurance companies and a time series of 6 years (2001-2006). Regarding the evidences from the empiric research, the hypotheses established were confirmed, that is, the directors of the insurance companies influence the technical provisions downwards if the parameters for solvency and taxes are lower, but on the other hand, they influence the technical provisions upwards if the values of the parameters for solvency and taxes are higher.

Construct representation and definitions in psychopathology: the case of delusion

Philosophy, Ethics, and Humanities in Medicine , 2010, DOI: 10.1186/1747-5341-5-5
Abstract: In this paper, we attempt to show the major limitations of the definition of delusion from a non-essentialist point of view.The problem is analyzed within the framework of constructs and their translation into definitions. Different linguistic and epistemological perspectives that do concur when one deals with psychopathological phenomena are also considered.The 'construct of delusion', rather than its clinical instances, is the reference in which its definition appears inept. Here we claim that the broad contextual and pragmatic bases that underpin the construct of delusion tend to be either overlooked or downplayed in the quest for a satisfactory definition of this phenomenon."Whatever is made explicit, something is always left implicit." Tim Thornton [1]Since the 16th century, delusions have been conceptualized as judgments, beliefs, or ideas that are pathologically false, erroneous, or impossible [2,3]. Currently, the most widespread definitions of delusion still rest upon this basis, with the addition of the external features put forward by Karl Jaspers in the early 20th century, which would supposedly help us to recognize such phenomenon: its incorrigibility and the certainty with which it is held. Along these lines, in the DSM-IV [4], and very similarly in the ICD-10 [5], delusion is defined as:"...a false personal belief [falsity] based on incorrect inference about external reality and firmly sustained [conviction] despite of what almost everyone else believes and despite of what constitutes incontrovertible and obvious proof or evidence to the contrary [incorrigibility]. The belief is not one ordinarily accepted by other members of the person's culture or sub-culture". Authors' brackets.However, each of these features could be seen as a defeasible element in the definition of delusion. Accordingly, some authors emphasize that delusional statements are occasionally found to be true [6-8]. For example, someone who firmly believes they are secretly watched by

Abstract: in this work was evaluated the response of yam (dioscorea alatal.), mimoso clone, to sources and dosis of organic manures. the sowing was established in 1998, november, on a dark clay texture distroferric eutrustox soil, planted with vegetables in last years. it was utilized a ramdomized block experimental design with three replications. the treatments were arranged in fatorial scheme, formed by four organic manuring levels (0, 1, 2 and 3), in relation to three sources (organic compost, enriched compost and bed of chicken manure). the levels 0, 1, 2 and 3 were corresponded to 0, 3, 6 and 9 t.ha-1 in dry matter, of organic compost and bed of chicken manure and to 0, 2, 4 and 6 t.ha-1 of enriched compost. the results indicated that manures don't elevated the rizomes yield, which varied from 17 to 25 t.ha-1, due to the experimental area presented satisfatory levels of fertility to the nutritional yam needs. nevertheless, these manures elevated the production of rizomes which varied from 150 to 600 g, which are best valuated to market.

Abstract: The biomass sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench], is an interesting crop considering the necessity to invest in alternative sources to generate renewable energy. The objective of this experiment was to identify sorghum biomass genotypes with greatest agronomic and energetic potential, and verify if there is phenotypic association between agronomic and technological properties in the hybrids. The study was conducted in three cities of the Minas Gerais State, Brazil (Lavras, Uberlandia and Sete Lagoas). It was evaluated 16 genotypes of sorghum biomass, being 14 of them sensitive hybrids to photoperiod and two cultivars, as control, insensitive to photoperiod. The experimental design was a triple lattice 4 × 4, with plots formed by four linear rows of 5.0 m. The morphoagronomic characteristics evaluated for the three environments were: days to flowering (FLOW), plant height (PH), number of stems (NS) and green matter production (GMP). In the experiment conducted in Lavras, also it was evaluated the agronomic traits: stem diameter (SD) and dry matter production (DMP) besides the technological traits: higher heating value (HHV), crude fiber (CF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF). The genotype × environment interaction was significant for all traits. The hybrids had superior performance compared to the control genotypes. Biomass sorghum hybrids, sensitive to photoperiod, when compared with commercial hybrids of forage sorghum, insensitive to photoperiod, had an average production of 34 t ha-1 dry matter with 62% humidity and higher heating value of 4.400 Kcal/Kg. There was no phenotypic correlation between agronomic and technological characters evaluated.
