Pimentel,Adriana Miranda;
Etnográfica , 2012,
Abstract: this article presents an ethnography study the aim of which was to understand the meanings and significance of the cultural practices of young people in a poor neighbourhood of salvador, in bahia, brazil. the study began with an analysis of the neighbourhood, looking at its history of settlement and urbanization, in addition to the socio-demographic and cultural characteristics of the residents. following this, the study dealt with the interviews conducted among young people and the artistic-cultural, religious, and political practices of these young people, which were recorded in a research diary. such practices function as resistance tactics: resistance to the invisibility of the young person to the adult world, resistance to the difficulty of surviving and resistance to the ‘temptations’ and vicissitudes of daily life. this interpretation of the place and the practices developed by the individuals who are part of it allows for an understanding of these people which goes beyond the difficult circumstances typical of a poor city neighbourhood.

Abstract: This study traces the profile of people with disabilities, as well as their health needs, in a neighborhoodof Salvador, State of Bahia. In this, the life and health conditions of people with disabilities in the context theylive were studied. The research was carried out in two coverage areas of the Community Health Workers Program(“Programa de Agentes Comunitários de Saúde”), where open-ended questionnaires were conducted with peoplewith physical and sensory disabilities. Socio-demographic variables on disability and access to services and projectsfor future life were selected. Results showed that the population is comprised predominantly of adults and elderly,African descent, female, with average income between half and three minimum wages, poorly educated, presentingdifficulties in relation to access to health services in the neighborhood and the city. People with disabilities refer tothe need of specialized health care in the neighborhood, improvements in life conditions, and expressed the desireto resume the activities they used to perform before the disability. These data reveal a population characterizedby a multifaceted complex of collective exclusion and deprivation and point to the need for understanding socialprocesses when improving the assistance offered to the population. To this end, it is necessary to rehabilitate thePrimary Health Care as a strategy of relevance to changes in health care for people with disabilities.

Abstract: objective: to evaluate serum concentrations of retinol and beta-carotene of children in teresina, piauí, brazil, and to evaluate their anthropometric profile and consumption of food sources of vitamin a. methods: cross-sectional study of 135 children from 36 to 83 months of age who attended a public child day care center. nutritional status was evaluated by: biochemical (serum concentrations of retinol and beta-carotene), anthropometric (weight for height - w/h and height for age - h/a indexes), and dietary (frequency of consumption of food sources of vitamin a) methods. results: the prevalence of vitamin a deficiency (vad) was 8.9% (95%ci: 4.7-15.0%). an association between previous supplementation with vitamin a and serum concentrations of retinol was observed, with a higher proportion of children with normal concentrations of retinol among those supplemented (p=0.025). there was a weak to moderate statistically significant correlation between the concentrations of retinol and beta-carotene, (p<0.021). the prevalence of low w/h and low h/a was respectively 1.9% (95%ci: 0.2-6.8%) and 9.7% (95%ci: 4.8-17.1%). the dietary evaluation showed low consumption of foods rich in vitamin a. conclusions: the high prevalence of vad combined to the prevalence of children with acceptable concentrations of retinol, low median concentrations of beta-carotene, low h/a, and inadequate ingestion of foods rich in vitamin a, reinforce the need to improve health and nutrition education in this population. based on these results, we recommend the ingestion of foods rich in vitamin a, as an important policy to deal with this nutritional problem. efforts are also necessary to maintain food fortification and supplementation programs.
Pimentel,Adriana A; Benaim,Gustavo;
Investigación Clínica , 2012,
Abstract: ca2+ is a second messenger which regulates many functions directly related with cancer such as proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis. the intracellular ca2+ concentration ([ca2+]i) is finely regulated by several mechanisms, among them ionic channels, the endoplasmic reticulum ca2+-atpase (serca), the plasma membrane calcium pump (pmca) and the mitochondrial ca2+ transport. in cancer, the tumour cell proliferates without control since the capacity to recognize apoptotic signals has been lost. the apoptosis is regulated by changes in several proteins, as caspases and the bcl-2 family members, among others. additionally, the “reticulum stress”, promoted by the accumulation and aggregation of unfolded proteins in the interior of the endoplasmic reticulum (er), ussually leads to apoptosis. the “reticulum stress” can be induced by several agents, remarkably with thapsigargin, a selective inhibitor of the serca, which in turn induces a large increment in [ca2+]i, leading to apoptosis. as a consequence, currently, derivatives of thapsigargin are successfully been assayed as anti-neoplastic agents. ca2+ is then transferred to the mitochondria, where it is known to constitute a main apoptotic signal. on the other hand, several sphingolipids, such as ceramide and sphingosine, and their phosphorylated derivatives ceramide-1-phosphate and sphingosine-1-phosphate, directly involved in the [ca2+]i regulation, are also recognized as signal messengers related with cancer processes. in this review we discuss new evidences on the effect of several sphingolipids in the intracellular ca2+ homeostasis and its relationship with apoptosis and cancer.
