Catastrophic Childhood Temporal Lobe Epilepsy
Giancarlo Di GENNARO,Antonio SPARANO,Addolorata MASCIA,Fabio SEBASTIANO
Journal of Neurological Sciences , 2005,
Abstract: Focal epilepsy, more frequently of extratemporal type, in children can present with a rapidly progressing course of intractable, severe epilepsy, associated to cognitive regression or stagnation. We present a typical example of such a patient with focal seizures due to a temporal lobe cortical lesion of developmental origin. Brain MRI revealed abnormalities in the right temporal lobe and Video-EEG monitoring revealed episodes clinically characterized by epileptic spasms followed by automotor seizures, with EEG findings suggestive of a right temporal lobe focus. Surgical resection resulted in excellent outcome.
Focal cortical dysplasia and pericentric inversion of chromosome 9: a case report
Giancarlo DI GENNARO,Addolorata MASCIA,Liliana G. GRAMMALDO,Fabio SEBASTIANO
Journal of Neurological Sciences , 2004,
Abstract: A child affected by multiple dysmorphisms and behavioral disorders with pericentric inversion on chromosome 9 [46 XY inv 9 (p11q11)] is reported. In this patient, a focal cortical dysplasia in right temporal lobe was observed on magnetic resonance imaging of the brain. To our knowledge, this report is the first description of focal cortical dysplasia in a patient of an occidental country with pericentric inversion of chromosome. 9. The relationship between alterations localised on chromosome 9 and cerebral cortical organisation disorders is discussed.

Small, medium and large shock waves for non-equilibrium radiation hydrodynamic
Corrado Mascia
Mathematics , 2012,
Abstract: We examine the existence of shock profiles for a hyperbolic-elliptic system arising in radiation hydrodynamics. The algebraic-differential system for the wave profile is reduced to a standard two-dimensional form that is analyzed in details showing the existence of heteroclinic connection between the two singular points of the system for any distance between the corresponding asymptotic states of the original model. Depending on the location of these asymptotic states, the profile can be either continuous or possesses at most one point of discontinuity. Moreover, a sharp threshold relative to presence of an internal absolute maximum in the temperature profile --also called {\sf Zel'dovich spike}-- is rigourously derived.
Stability analysis for linear heat conduction with memory kernels described by Gamma functions
Corrado Mascia
Mathematics , 2014,
Abstract: This paper analyzes heat equation with memory in the case of kernels that are linear combinations of Gamma distributions. In this case, it is possible to rewrite the non-local equation as a local system of partial differential equations of hyperbolic type. Stability is studied in details by analyzing the corresponding dispersion relation, providing sufficient stability condition for the general case and sharp instability thresholds in the case of linear combination of the first three Gamma functions.
Velocity-jump processes with a finite number of speeds and their asymptotically parabolic nature
Corrado Mascia
Mathematics , 2013,
Abstract: The paper examines a class of first order linear hyperbolic systems, proposed as a generalization of the Goldstein-Kac model for velocity-jump processes and determined by a finite number of speeds and corresponding transition rates. It is shown that the large-time behavior is described by a corresponding scalar diffusive equation of parabolic type, defined by a diffusion matrix for which an explicit formula is given. Such representation takes advantage of a variant of the Kirchoff's matrix tree Theorem applied to the graph associated to the system and given by considering the velocities as verteces and the transition rates as weights of the arcs.

Biological Therapy and Risk of Malignancies: A Literature Review  [PDF]
Gilda Sandri, Valentina Cestelli, Maria Teresa Mascia
Journal of Cancer Therapy (JCT) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/jct.2013.43A056
Abstract: Data from literature show that the overall risk of cancer does not as a result from treatment with these drugs. The only cancer for which various authors have reported an increased risk, in some cases, are skin cancers, different from melanoma and melanoma. Recent results of large observational studies and meta-analyzes indicate the absence of an increased risk of lymphoma related to therapy with anti-TNF-α. It has been reported, by some authors, that there is a possible increased risk of lung cancer, especially in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. There is limited information in literature about the effects of biologics in patients with a history of cancer. Most of the guidelines indicate that treatment with biologics can be considered with caution and only in patients free of cancer since at least 5 years. Some studies report a lower oncological risk with etanercept compared to monoclonal antibodies, especially in the case of lymphoma. However, this data has not been confirmed in other studies, and has been associated with a limited period of time after starting therapy. Information about the latest biological therapies is still poor. Therefore, there is not sufficient evidence for a preferential use of certain drugs rather than others.
