Combinatorial optimization algorithms for intelligent vehicle sequencing problem at an isolated intersection

Abstract: With the development of telecommunication and miniaturization technology, advantages brought by intelligent vehicles are more and more studied for designing new traffic control systems. In this paper, we present a novel vehicle sequencing strategy at an isolated intersection based on the information received from approaching intelligent vehicles. A Branch and Bound algorithm and an efficient heuristic are proposed to find an optimal or approximate vehicle passing sequence. The objective is to improve the congestion by minimizing the overall vehicle evacuation time. Structural properties are carefully analyzed to simplify the search procedure. Computational experiments and simulations are also carried out to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithms.

Abstract:

In this paper we present a multi-optimization technique based on genetic algorithms to search optimal cuttings parameters such as cutting depth, feed rate and cutting speed of multi-pass turning processes. Tow objective functions are simultaneously optimized under a set of practical of machining constraints, the first objective function is cutting cost and the second one is the used tool life time. The proposed model deals multi-pass turning processes where the cutting operations are divided into multi-pass rough machining and finish machining. Results obtained from Genetic Algorithms method are presented in Pareto frontier graphic; this technique helps us in decision making process. An example is presented to illustrate the procedure of this technique.

Abstract:

Today, in the modern era, and under the pressure of rapid development around the kingdom regions, electric utilities are confronted with a myriad of challenges that include aging infrastructure, enhanced expectation of reliability, reduced cost, and coping effectively with uncertainties and changing regulation requirements. Indeed, for distribution systems, HV/MV substations represent a complex and critical physical asset that requires a careful evaluation of their maintenance practices aiming at more cost-effective tasks. The first concern of the electric power distribution company in Morocco is the optimization of the distribution network maintenance scheduling, to minimize system operating costs and ensure that the system is running most economically. There is significant pressure on power providers for greater system reliability and improvement of customer satisfaction, while similar emphasis is placed on cost reduction. These cost reductions focus on reducing operating and maintenance expenses, and minimizing investments in new plants and equipment. However, the present of the electricity distribution, influenced by a number of technical restrictions and strict regulatory requirements to meet, leads distribution utilities to search new ways of optimizing the maintenance management, make an effort to maximize profit by reducing their electricity supply and operation costs while maintaining their reliability, developing more effective activities, with lower costs. Furthermore, maximal HV/MV substation asset value and minimal maintenance cost are typical economic objectives of the electric utilities. The optimization of maintenance is one possible technique to reduce maintenance costs while improving reliability and utilities need to implement new strategies for more effective maintenance techniques and Asset Management (AM) methods programs to manage inspections and maintenance activities in order to control HV/MV substation equipment conditions. However, development of strategies to make sound decisions in order to effectively improve equipment and system reliability while meeting constraints such as a maintenance budget is a challenge. Finally, this paper describes the application of a new approach based Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) methodology to optimize maintenance resources and to the development of maintenance plan for HV/MV distribution substations. Tsunami vulnerability and damage assessment in the coastal area of Rabat and Salé, Morocco

Abstract: This study, a companion paper to Renou et al. (2011), focuses on the application of a GIS-based method to assess building vulnerability and damage in the event of a tsunami affecting the coastal area of Rabat and Salé, Morocco. This approach, designed within the framework of the European SCHEMA project (www.schemaproject.org) is based on the combination of hazard results from numerical modelling of the worst case tsunami scenario (inundation depth) based on the historical Lisbon earthquake of 1755 and the Portugal earthquake of 1969, together with vulnerability building types derived from Earth Observation data, field surveys and GIS data. The risk is then evaluated for this highly concentrated population area characterized by the implementation of a vast project of residential and touristic buildings within the flat area of the Bouregreg Valley separating the cities of Rabat and Salé. A GIS tool is used to derive building damage maps by crossing layers of inundation levels and building vulnerability. The inferred damage maps serve as a base for elaborating evacuation plans with appropriate rescue and relief processes and to prepare and consider appropriate measures to prevent the induced tsunami risk.
GPS signal accuracy and coverage analysis platform: Application to Trimble Juno SB receiver

Abstract: Nowadays, information and mobile information technologies are being considered by the scientific community as primordial support for many other emerging technologies. The present paper exposes the results of a study and the analysis of accuracy, coverage and continuity of Global Positioning System (GPS) signal, using the Trimble Juno SB receiver. This is frequently used today for data collection and integration within Geographic Information Systems (GISs). Location-based services quality is highly depending on the accuracy of the position of the user. Generally, for each GPS enabled receiver the user need to evaluate the radius of the confidence region which describes the accuracy of the GPS device. In order to describe the accuracy of GPS receivers; a statistical method using a mobile software acquisition tool developed within our research group has been used. Intensive field measurements (i.e., 1data/1min x 3days) were carried out in Tetuan city (Morocco) during days of 29-30-31 May 2012 using local storage database feature. Homogeneous observation conditions and settings were respected for GPS signal acquisition. Finally, after calibrating the equipment, the results indicate that the Trimble Juno SB GPS receiver is well suited for services where meter accuracy is required.

Prevalence and Characteristics of Lung Involvement on High Resolution Computed Tomography in Patients with Ankylosing Spondylitis: A Systematic Review

Abstract: To determine the prevalence of lung involvement and the spectrum of abnormalities revealed on HRCT in patients with AS, a systematic literature review was conducted in the Medline database up to May 2009 and in the abstracts of rheumatology scientific meetings (2006–2008). A hand search of references was also performed. Among the 264 selected articles, 10 articles (303 patients) allowed a calculation of the prevalence of lung abnormalities on thoracic HRCT in AS. A total of 185 patients (61%) had an abnormal thoracic HRCT: upper lobe fibrosis in 21 (6.9%), emphysema in 55 (18.1%), bronchiectasis in 33 (10.8%), and ground glass attenuation in 34 (11.2%). Non specific interstitial abnormalities were observed in 101 (33%) patients. The most common observed abnormalities were pleural thickening (52%), parenchymal bands (45%) and interlobular septal thickening (30%). Only the prevalence of upper lobe fibrosis increased significantly with disease duration (3 studies). Mild and non-specific interstitial abnormalities on thoracic HRCT are common in patients with AS, even in patients with early disease and without respiratory symptoms. 1. Introduction Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic rheumatic disorder characterized by inflammation of the enthesis (especially of the axial skeleton) and sometimes the joints, which may lead to ankylosis [1]. AS is a multisystemic disease and extraarticular features include uveitis, carditis, colitis, and osteoporosis [2–4]. Lung involvement is now a well-recognized extra-articular feature of AS. It was initially described in 1941 [5]. However, it was considered as an extra-articular manifestation of the disease only since 1965 [6]. The prevalence of pleuropulmonary involvement in AS varies considerably (0–30%) in the medical literature. The most frequently recognized pleuropulmonary manifestations are upper lobe fibrosis, mycetoma formation, and pleural thickening [7–12]. The advent of high resolution computed tomography (HRCT) in the mid 1980s has allowed physicians to examine the entire lung parenchyma and pleura in many conditions with diffuse lung disease using a noninvasive method [13]. The objective of this analysis was to determine the prevalence of lung involvement and the spectrum of abnormalities revealed on HRCT in patients with AS according to the disease duration and to describe its clinical characteristics by a systematic literature review. 2.
