PUNARNAVA (BOERHAVIA DIFFUSA): A PROMISING INDIGENOUS HERBAL DRUG

Abstract: Ayurveda is a sea of knowledge which is widespread not only on the surface but is indeed deep remarkably as well. It emphasises on the preventive aspect of the health and discusses the analysis and management of various physical and mental disorders. While viewing this traditional knowledge, one comes across a very important herb Punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa). It is a trailing herb which is found throughout India. This herb has registered its importance in various formulations as it has been significantly found to be effective in diseases like shotha (inflammation) and pandu (anaemia). The market analysis shows that many different formulations are available in which the punarnava mandur and Punarnava ashtaka kwatha are being prescribed at large. In this article, summarization of the various synonyms, morphological properties, pharmacological activities, uses, dose and formulations of the selected drug from various classical texts up to modern era is attempted. The review indicates that this indigenous medicinal drug has wholesome references in various ancient and modern texts. This plant has proved itself to be beneficial in the past, is a drug of choice nowadays and seems to be effective in future. More research needs to be carried out in formulating new medicines which can contribute to animal life and mankind.

Abstract: Ferrocyanides of Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II) and Cd(II) were synthesized and characterized by IR spectra, magnetic susceptibility, thermal gravimetric analysis, elemental analysis and X ray diffraction studies. Antimicrobial potential of these complexes have been evaluated. Antifungal screening of these complexes has been carried out against Mycogone perniciosa and Verticillium fungicola causing wet and dry bubble diseases of button mushroom respectively. Nickel ferrocyanide has been found to be most effective against Mycogone perniciosa with 60% inhibitory effect while cadmium ferrocyanide has exhibited significant potential of 85% against Verticillium fungicola.

Abstract:

There are various technologies like CVD. Radio Frequency sputtering, spin coating etc. present for thin film deposition for various applications and for gas sensors. In this review, special attention is focused on the thin film deposition for gas sensing applications by using Langmuir Blodgett method. Langmuir Blodgett method also discussed briefly. Modified technique of Langmuir-Blodgett like Langmuir Schaefer method is discussed and various examples of Langmuir Blodgett techniques for gas sensing for space applications are included. Future prospects of gas sensing thin film deposition by Langmuir Blodgett technique are explained.

Impact of Smoking on Serum Immunoglobulin G Levels in Patients with Periodontitis  [PDF]

Abstract:

Tobacco smoking has been found to be a major environmental factor associated with generalized forms of severe periodontitis. Altered serum and gingival crevicular fluid inflammatory cytokine profiles, immune cell function, and altered proteolytic regulations are noticed in smokers. These observations are not consistent, and to date, there has been no clear mechanism to explain how smoking may affect periodontal disease. Hence, the present study was undertaken to assess the impact of smoking on serum immunoglobulin G (IgG) levels in smokers with periodontitis and its potential role as a risk indicator of the disease process. 40 subjects (15 smokers and 15 non-smokers with chronic periodontitis, 10 healthy controls) were included in the study. Smoking history was assessed according to a standardized interview and a questionnaire, Fagerstom Test for Nicotine Dependence. Serum immunoglobulin IgG was estimated with immunoturbidimetric assay. IgG levels were significantly decreased with longer duration of smoking. In addition levels of serum IgG were significantly lower in smokers compared to non-smokers with chronic periodontitis and healthy controls (P < 0.001). Current observations indicate that cigarette smoking may be associated with the suppression of B-cell function and immunoglobulin production. The alteration of antibody levels further explains the potential mechanism by which smoking exacerbates periodontal disease. Further studies at the molecular level may highlight the specific mechanism by which tobacco can interact with cells of the immune system and its impact on periodontal disease process. Additional controlled, longitudinal studies may expound the significance of serum antibodies as potential markers for periodontal disease.

Thyrotoxic Periodic Paralysis: Case Reports and an Up-to-Date Review of the Literature

Abstract: Objectives. To describe 2 cases of thyrotoxic periodic paralysis. Methods. We report of 2 cases of thyrotoxic periodic paralysis in 2 individuals from 2 different backgrounds with emphasis on their presentation and treatment. We also conducted a literature search to put together an update review of thyrotoxic periodic paralysis. Results. A 47-year-old Chinese and 28-year-old Caucasian male presented with profound yet reversible weakness associated with hypokalemia on admission bloods and thyrotoxicosis. Both were given definitive therapy to prevent recurrence of attacks with any future relapse of thyrotoxicosis. Conclusion. Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis (TPP) is a rare but potentially serious complication of thyrotoxicosis resulting in temporary but severe muscle weakness. Recent discovery of a novel mutation in the KCNJ18 gene which codes for an inwardly rectifying potassium channel and is controlled by thyroid hormones may provide greater insight into the pathogenesis of TPP.

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) accounts for approximately 85% of all lung cancers. Most NSCLC patients present with loco-regionally advanced or metastatic disease where response rates are low and median overall survival approximates 8 to 10 months. Chemotherapy is the mainstay of treatment for NSCLC patients with metastatic disease. Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and family of receptors play a critical role in lung cancer tumorigenesis. Cetuximab, a monoclonal antibody that binds the EGFR, has demonstrated preclinical and clinical activity against NSCLC. This review focuses on the use of cetuximab in NSCLC.

Abstract: In this paper, we discuss the performance of Blind Equalization algorithms, which can deal with the cases that the input signals are correlated and decrease the filtering error. We describe the algorithm process and analysis the error performance and computational complexity and an example of adaptive blind equalization is given to verify these algorithms. Results and conclusions are made which may be benefit to the researchers and engineers in the adaptive filtering field.

Abstract: Impulse noise is caused by errors in the data transmission generated in noisy sensors orcommunication channels, or by errors during the data capture from digital cameras. Noise is usuallyquantified by the percentage of pixels which are corrupted. Corrupted pixels are either set to the maximumvalue or have single bits flipped over. In some cases, single pixels are set alternatively to zero or to themaximum value. This is the most common form of impulse noise and is called salt and pepper noise.Nevertheless, other types of impulse noise are possible as well. This paper work is going to provide a new,faster, and more efficient noise reduction method for images corrupted with impulse noise. So the mainobjectives of this paper work is to get the almost actual image from the corrupted impulse noised image usingfuzzy logic i.e. image enhancement.
