EFFECT OF THE ORTHOSIPHON STAMINEUS, BENTH ON AMINOPYRINE METABOLISM IN RAT HEPATOCYTES

Malaysian Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences , 2007,
Abstract: One of the commonly used herbal medicines in Malaysia is Orthosiphon stamineus, Benth (family: Lamiaceae) or locally known as Misai Kucing. This experiment was undertaken to evaluate possible interaction of methanol extract of O. stamineus with aminopyrine, a model drug, in different age groups (young, adult and old) of Sprague-Dawley (SD) female rat hepatocytes. Hepatocytes were prepared by collagenase perfusion technique. Determination of aminopyrine N-demethylase activity was done by measuring formaldehyde formed. From these findings, only normal young female rat hepatocytes in the presence of 0.001 mg/ml of methanol extract of O. stamineus showed significant increase in aminopyrine N-demethylase activity. However, aminopyrine N-demethylase activity was not affected in hepatocytes of normal adult and old female SD rats. In conclusion, exposure of methanol extract of O. stamineus could affect phase I aminopyrine metabolism in normal young female SD rat hepatocytes but this effect was age-dependent.

International Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research , 2012,
Abstract: Mitragyna speciosa Korth. is a member of the Rubiaceae family. More than 25 alkaloids have been isolated from Mitragyna speciosa. Mitragynine is the major alkaloid of this plant and is responsible for antinociceptive action. No single study is available about the effect of mitragynine on aminopyrine N-demethylase activity in rat hepatocytes. Experiments were undertaken to evaluate the effect of mitragynine in different age groups (adult & old) of Sprague- Dawley (SD) male and female rat hepatocytes. In vitro this evaluation was assessed by different concentration of mitragynine (0.0025μM-250μM). Hepatocytes were prepared by collagenase perfusion technique. Aminopyrine N-demethylase activity was determined by measuring the quantity of formaldehyde formed. Results showed that a significant increase in aminopyrine N-demethylase activity was observed in the adult male, female and old female SD rat hepatocytes treated with 250μM mitragynine (p< 0.05). However, the old male rat did not show any significant change at any concentration of mitragynine. In conclusion this study indicates the induction of hepatic drug metabolizing enzymes by mitragynine is affected by the aging process in male but unaffected in female.

This research used quantitative research method, obtaining data through questionnaires and information from secondary data. The sample was randomly selected from population by using convenience random sampling technique. The data collected were analyzed by using frequency, descriptive statistic, independent sample test and ANOVA. Findings indicated that major factors that lead to the perception of the tax payers toward e-filing system is perceive usefulness of the tax filing system itself. For the future research, this study suggested boosting the positive perception toward e-filing system of the tax payer to give the tax payers more exposure on how to use the e-filing system. In order to find out the reason of accident at the construction site, the researcher uses the SPSS by using the two tests on every variable which are T-test and ANOVA. As a result, all of the variables show the significant result which contributes to the reason of accidents happened at the construction site. These findings can be as a references and guidelines to workers and employers in order to prevent the accidents at the workplace, especially at the construction sites. As recommendation, all parties have to concern about what the best measurements should be practiced to prevent accidents happen again as well as to increase the level of safety and security at the workplace. Asian Social Science , 2012, DOI: 10.5539/ass.v8n8p96
Abstract: Currently we are witnessing significant changes in the nature of policy making and management in local government. Essentially, these changes represent a move away from the relatively passive approach towards a more purposeful approach in which local authorities attempt to learn about the nature and causes of local problems and to respond accordingly. Therefore, what is required is a theoretical framework that could explain and relates the concept of planning to the concept of power, and seeks an explanation of decision-making process. The organizational changes and complex interaction in local government that involve politicians, planners, officers and decision-making bring about the important of current practices and evaluating future changes. Thus, this article tries to propose a model of decision making-process for greater performance in local government. In the findings, there are a few factors influencing councilors in running their functions. It shows that councillor as representatives at local government level will be a good policy maker in handling local manners by adopting this proposed model. In future research, to be a greater practice of rational decision making, perhaps the stakeholders such as households, business communities, community leaders and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) will be collaborated effectively with councillor in decision making-process relates to local affairs.

Asian Social Science , 2009, DOI: 10.5539/ass.v4n12p113
Abstract: The purpose of this study is to examine the perceptions among students from three public Universities, particularly students from Universiti Teknologi MARA, Universiti Sains Malaysia, and Universiti Utara Malaysia towards lecturers teaching Quality determinants. A field survey among students from different field of studies (Social Sciences and Pure Sciences) was conducted through a questionnaire. The data were factor-analyzed to determine the key dimensions of lecturers teaching quality. The resulting dimensions were applied in the subsequent discriminant and univariate analysis conducted to determine which factors discriminate between students on the basis of perceived students-lecturers interaction. The result shows that seventeen dimensions, namely: clarity, practicality, exercises, attention, enthusiasm, creativity, feedback, syllabus, motivation, extra reading, availability, technology, punctuality, current issue, approachable, language use, and communication discriminate between students in terms of lecturers teaching performance and students perceptions of teaching quality. Findings suggest that the lecturers can promote and enhance teaching effectiveness by applying clarity, practicality, exercises, attention, enthusiasm, creativity, feedback, syllabus, motivation, extra reading, availability, technology, punctuality, current issue, approachable, language use, and communication to students during lecturer-student interaction in the classroom. This study add value by unveiling the key antecedents and predictors of students perceptions thus confirm the plateau of confirmation and disconfirmation theory development.
