Abstract: depression has been observed in patients with chronic-degenerative diseases, including cancer. using different coping strategies can be extremely important under these pathological conditions, considering the presence of stress and unwanted feelings. the purpose of this systematic review was to identify types of studies aimed at promoting coping strategies for depression among women with cancer and interventions used to promote these strategies. three different electronic databases were reviewed, using the key words depression, coping and cancer to seek publications in english, portuguese and spanish, which resulted in 376 articles. the search was limited to female gender and the study types: clinical trial, meta-analysis, randomized control trial and review. after excluding studies whose full text was not available and repetitions in different databases, 22 articles were selected, originated in different countries (63% from north america) and published in journals from different knowledge areas; experimental (63%), recent (1996 till 2006); adopting individual (59.9%) or group strategies, among which emotional support and cognitive therapy were the most frequent. the identified interventions that promote coping strategies can be effective, significantly decrease depression and increase coping and quality of life. it is recommended that nurses use these strategies to reduce depression during the cancer treatment process.

Online Brazilian Journal of Nursing , 2008,
Abstract: Bone marrow transplantation (BMT) causes psychological effects in patients, especially in terms of autonomy and coping with the situation; therapeutic communication can help patients to recover these. This integrative literature review aims to identify evidence of using communication interventions in patients submitted to BMT. The terms communication and BMT were used to select articles from the following databases:MEDLINE/PubMed, Cinahl and Lilacs. Nine articles were analyzed, distributed between 1991 and 2006, 44% of which came from the United States and 55% were quantitative studies. The results showed the importance of communication among health professionals and patients as a contributing factor to increase commitment in treatment, to facilitate the understanding of the processes involved and to identify their needs, so as to humanize care and formulate strategies to decrease or even put an end to undesirable moment

Abstract: introduction: otoacoustic emissions can be an alternative for cochlear evaluation in noise induced hearing loss (nihl). objective: to investigate the correlation between the findings of audiometry results and distortion product otoacoustic emissions (dpoae) in the military police. method: from cross-sectional and retrospective study, 200 military police officers were submitted to audiological evaluation - pure tone audiometry and dpoae. results: considering the provisions of ordinance 19 of the labour department, the results were suggestive of induced hearing loss by high sound pressure levels in 58 individuals, distributed as follows: 28 (48.3%) bilateral cases and 30 (51.7%) unilateral cases, and 15 (25.85%) in each ear. the correlation between the audiometric and dpoae showed statistical significance in most of the frequencies tested in both ears, confirming that the greater the degree of hearing loss, the smaller the dpoae amplitudes. in addition, there was observed significant difference between the dpoaes amplitudes of normal subjects and listeners with hearing loss, confirming the lowering of responses in the group with hearing loss. conclusion: considering that the correlation between pure tone audiometry and dpoae, we conclude that otoacoustic emissions can be a complementary tool for the detection and control of nihl in military police.

Abstract: mental models play an important role in the evolution of an individual's so-called knowledge. using such representations, students can explain, foresee, and attribute causality to observed phenomena. in the case of chemistry, the ability to work mentally with models assumes great importance, due to the microscopic component that is characteristic of this science. with the objective of exploring students' ability to work with models, 27 students of the chemistry institute of unesp were asked to describe the mechanisms of dissolution, in water, of nacl, hcl and hcn, as well as the partial dissolution of i2. due to difficulties of access to complex descriptors of these processes, each student was asked to explain the phenomena using words and drawings. the results of these investigations were analyzed, and enabled construction of a framework representing the chemistry students' theoretical training, especially with respect to their most important transferred skill: an ability to model the physical world.

Acta Amazonica , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0044-59672008000400024
Abstract: the study aimed to analyze the landing of commercial fishing in middle madeira river, near manicoré city, identifying the exploited species, fishing grounds and the contribution for the local supplying of fish. fish landings were sampled daily, using questionnaires, given to fishermen after the fish sale. in 2002, 225.4 tons of fish were landed in manicoré city. motorized canoes undertook more fishing trips, but the higher fish landings were accomplished by boats. mean values of fish landings were 11.2 tons/month, 5.4 tons/month and 2.4 tons/month for boats, motorized canoes and fish purchasers, respectively. 32 species or group of species were landed, with a predominance of jaraqui (semaprochilodus spp), pacu (mylossoma duriventre), curimatá (prochilodus nigricans), sardinha (triportheus spp) e jatuarana (brycon spp), responsible for 75% of fish production. 32 fishing grounds were identified and the most exploited were the madeira and manicoré rivers, acará and boquer?o lakes and the matupiri stream.

Abstract: the adaptation of the strategies of the fisherman to the seasonality in the amazonian attests the level of traditional ecological knowledge in relation to the fish and to the variations of the fishing in that environment, as it happens in other regions of brazil. in that sense the present work aimed to analyze the use of the fishing grounds and the distribution of the fishing effort by the commercial fleet in relation to the hydrological cycle. data of fishing landings and fishing expeditions of the medium madeira river region were collected daily, from june of 2003 until may of 2004, and submitted to the descriptive statistics. the results showed that there was a tendency towards an increase in the fishing effort during the rising water season for the vessels of the local fleet, to compensate for the decrease in the captured production. the fishing boats and motorized canoes presented medium values of cpue 22.9 and 20.6 kg/fisherman*day, respectively. it was also shown that fishermen of motorized canoes utilized the stream and lake environments the most, where as boat fishermen relied mainly on the river environment.
