Anti Lithiasis Activity of Avocado (Persea americana Mill) Leaves Extract in White Male Rats

Abstract: In Indonesia, avocado leaves have been used as traditional medicines for diureticum to cure urolithiasis. This research was to determine anti lithiasis activity of avocado leaves (Persea americana Mill) extract on white male rats nefrolithiasis model induced by ethylene glycol. Ethanol extraction method was used to get extract of avogadro leaves. Twenty adult male white rats were divided into 4 different induction treatments i.e. aquadest, ethylene glycol 0.75% and ammonium chloride 2%, and extract of avocado leaves with different levels of 100 and 300 mg/kg bw respectively. Their body weight was measured daily to determine their growth ratio. And at the end of the trial, the kidney was analyzed its calcium level and inhibitory activity to formation of calcium oxalate crystals. The results showed that the amount of calcium level in the kidney of rats treated with extract of avogadro leaves was significantly decreased than that of rats treated with ethylene glycol 0.75% and ammonium chloride 2% (P < 0.05). The extract avocado leaves as a herbal remedy can be recommended as a phytotherapeutic agent especially for preventive action for urolithiasis diseases.
Swelling Measurements of a Low Rank Coal in Supercritical CO2  [PDF]

Coal swelling in the presence of water as well as CO2 is a well-known phenomenon, and these may affect the permeability of coal. Quantifying swelling effects is becoming an important issue to verify the suitability of particular coal seams for CO2-enhanced coal bed methane recovery projects. In this report, coal swelling experiments using a visualization method in the CO2 supercritical conditions were conducted on crushed coal samples. The measurement apparatus was designed specifically for the present swelling experiment using a visualization method. Crushed coal samples were used instead of block coal samples to shorten equilibrium time and to solve the problem of limited availability of core coal samples. Dry and wet coal samples were used in the experiments because there is relatively limited information about how the swelling of coal by CO2 is affected by water saturation. Moreover, some coal seams are saturated with water in initial reservoir conditions. The maximum volumetric swelling was around 3% at 10 MPa for dry samples and almost half that at the same pressure for wet samples. The wet samples showed lower volumetric swelling than dry ones because the wet coal samples were already swollen by water. Experimental results obtained for swelling were comparable with other reports. Our visualization method using crushed samples has advantages in terms of sample preparation and experimental execution compared with the other methods used to measure coal swelling using block samples.

CO2 Absorption from Its Mixture with CH4 or N2 through Hollow Fiber Membrane Contactor using Water as Solvent

Abstract: Hollow fiber membrane contactors have been widely used as gas-liquid contactors recently such as in the CO2 absorption process from gas stream. This research aims to evaluate the effectiveness of hollow fiber membrane contactor to absorb CO2 from its mixture with CH4 or N2 using water through mass transfer and hydrodynamic tests. There are 3 membrane modules used in this research with shell diameter of 1.9 cm, length of 40 cm, outer fiber diameter of 2.7 mm and fiber number in the contactors of 10, 15 and 20. Liquid flow rates in the hollow fiber membrane contactors are varied in this research. Research results show that mass transfer coefficients in the membrane contactor increase with increasing liquid flow rate and decrease with increasing fiber number in the contactor. Flux of CO2 into water can achieve 1.4x10-9 mol CO2 /m2.s and mass transfer coefficients can achieve 1.23 x 10-7 m/s. Meanwhile, hydrodynamic test results show that water pressure drop in the membrane contactors increase with increasing fiber number in the contactors.

Abstract: In the title structure, C21H20O5·C2H5OH, the curcumine-type molecule has a double E conformation for the two benzylidene double bonds [C=C = 1.342 (4) and 1.349 (4) ] and is nearly planar with respect to the non-H atoms (r.m.s. deviation from planarity = 0.069 ). The two phenolic OH groups form bifurcated hydrogen bonds with intramolecular branches to adjacent methoxy O atoms and intermolecular branches to either a neighbouring molecule or an ethanol solvent molecule. The ethanol O atom donates a hydrogen bond to the keto O atom. These hydrogen bonds link the constituents into layers parallel to (101) in the crystal structure.
