Abstract: as modern healthcare systems are the outcome of complex interactions among economic, political and social processes, the purpose of this paper is to discuss the links between health and development in brazil, showing that the depletion of the liberal economic policy model paves the way for a return to development, understood as a blend of economic growth, changes in the production structure and better living standards. the healthcare production complex plays a crucial role in this process, as a field where technological innovation and capital build-up generate opportunities for investment, work and income, in addition to spurring major steps forward in terms of upgrading individual health. the recent adoption of public policies designed to underpin aspects of economic and social policies shows that the issue of national development has returned to a key position on government agendas, opening up prospects of closer integration between economic logic and public health logic. however, it must be admitted that brazil has not yet achieved a virtuous association between healthcare and development.
Abstract: in venezuela for several decades, graduate school town planning students have focused on urban problem studies, simulation models and plans to ?solve? problems. in most venezuelan cities, urban planning has often not been implemented. even worse, curricula have underestimated methods for structuring problems and for making decisions under pressure and with little data. however, over the last decade, some professors have introduced workshops on the strategic choice approach of j. friend and a. hickling (2002) in the master?s course in town planning policies and local action at the instituto de urbanismo of the universidad central de venezuela. the aim is to allow students to make proposals for the immediate improvement of downtown zones in caracas as there is not enough time to make and approve ?plans?. this case study, the solid waste management in downtown caracas, results from work carried out with professors and students for the libertador municipality. this experience allowed us to make immediate proposals for the decision takers in a short period of time, jointly with the agencies involved in the problems, as well as to identify mid-term studies.

Abstract: The author examines the incorporation of this painting into the collections of the Prado Museum in 1935, which generated the scrutiny of the state of knowledge concerning the painter at the time and the consolidation of his artistic reputation. The painting probably came from Naples, thereby explaining the idiosyncratic Italian iconography, common in the Viceroyalty.
Evolution of Coral Rubble Deposits on a Reef Platform as Detected by Remote Sensing

Remote Sensing , 2013, DOI: 10.3390/rs5010001
Abstract: An investigation into the evolution of coral rubble deposits on a coral reef platform is assessed using high-resolution remote sensing data and geospatial analysis. Digital change detection analysis techniques are applied to One Tree Reef in the southern Great Barrier Reef by analysing aerial photographs and satellite images captured between 1964 and 2009. Two main types of rubble deposits were identified: (1) rubble flats that are featureless mass accumulations of coral rubble; and, (2) rubble spits that are shore-normal linear features. While both deposits prograde in a lagoon-ward direction, rubble spits move faster (~2 m/yr) than rubble flats (~0.5 m/yr). The volume of rubble, the underlying substrate, the energy regime, and storm frequency control the rate of progradation. Rubble flat occurrence is restricted to the high-energy (windward) margin of the coral reef platform, while rubble spits are distributed reef wide, both in modal high energy and modal low energy regions of the reef. Rubble spit deposition is considered to be a result of enlarged spur and groove morphology of the forereef, whereby wave energy is focused through the enlarged groove formations causing the preferential deposition of coral rubble in particular zones of the adjacent reef flat. One last control is thought to be the elevation of the reef crest whereby lower areas are more prone to rubble flat development. A vertical and ocean-ward accumulation of rubble is occurring on the windward margin of the reef leading to a build-up and build-out of the reef, governing the expansion of the reef footprint. This study shows for the first time the evolution of a coral reef rubble flat and rubble spits over decadal time scales as detected through remotely sensed images spanning 45 years.
(Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), Heliothis virescens (Fabr.) e Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) em duas temperaturas

Neotropical Entomology , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S1519-566X2001000100003
Abstract: the goal of this work was to determine the most suitable temperature for rearing spodoptera frugiperda (j.e. smith), diatraea saccharalis (fabr.) and heliothis virescens (fabr.) in artificial diet, by means of measures of food intake and utilization between 25 and 30oc. fifty worms per species, individualized and kept in 8.5 cm long and 2.5 cm diameter glass containers were studied at the temperatures mentioned, 60±10% rh, and 14 hour photophase. based on dry matter, one determined worm weight at maximum development, food consumed and feces eliminated at both conditions (25 and 30oc) and the nutritional ratios: relative consumption ratio (rcr), relative growth ratio (rgr), relative metabolic ratio (rmr), approximate digestibility (ad), efficiency of conversion of ingested food (eci) and efficiency of conversion of digested food (ecd). the most suitable temperature for s. frugiperda was 30oc since it provided higher weight at the maximum development, higher weight gain, higher growth ratio, higher eci, higher ecd, and lower metabolic cost. on the other hand, no differences regarding nutritional rates were observed for either h. virescens or d. saccharalis evaluated at both thermal conditions. thus, for one generation and based on nutritional rates, the highest temperature (30oc) is recommended for laboratory maintenance of s. frugiperda. as for the other species, rearing at 25 or 30oc is indifferent.

At present, plants are the main source of obtention of most of the drugs that may be useful for treating cancer. A mixture of polysaccharides was extracted from the leaves of Argemone mexicana L. plant, also known as Cardo Santo, collected in the flowering period. The method of incorporation of tritiated Thymidine was used to determine the effect of the mixture on the cellular proliferation in human cellular lines (H125 and U1906). The antitumoral activity of this crude of polysaccharides administered alone or combined with 2 known cytostatic agents was evaluated in mice inoculated with tumoral cells of lymphocytic leukemia P-388 and sarcoma 37 and their indirect antitumoral activity was assessed in Ehrlich's ascitic tumor. In all the cases, it was calculated the increase of survival time in relation to the positive or negative pattern of comparison. The mixture of polysaccharides caused a rejection to Elrich's tumor implantation, and its administration together with 5-Fluoracyl produced a m
