Detection of New Genomic Landmarks in the Maltese Goat Using Rapd PCR
R. Blundell,A.E. Felice
Journal of Animal and Veterinary Advances , 2012,
Abstract: Since no information of the Maltese goat genome is available, RAPD technique has been used to identify a number of DNA landmarks. Genome Landmarks have been obtained from the DNA of 66 Maltese goats which were studied with Random Amplification of Polymorphic DNA (RAPD). Eleven (11) reproducible RAPD polymorphic zones were identified. For sequencing, the RAPD zones were cloned into the Puc 18 vector utilising E. coli and then sequenced using both the forward (universal) and reverse primers specific for the Puc 18 vector. After sequencing a total of nine new markers (AF078170, AF078171, AF078172, AF078173, AF078174, AF078175, AF078176, AF078177, AF078178) amounting to approximately 5,500 bp of sequence from the goat genome were identified and their homologies with known nucleic acid and protein databases were described. The new sequences could provide useful anchors for more extensive mapping and sequencing and for genomics assisted breeding of the Maltese goat.

Use of ICT Among Rural People in Oyo State, Nigeria
A.E. Adekoya
Research Journal of Applied Sciences , 2012,
Abstract: Information Communication Technology (ICT) is being used in different parts of the world to bridge the gap between the rich and the poor in terms of technology change and development initiatives. Provision of ICT for people s use has been through public and private commercial centers where various facilities and infrastructure are available for different purposes. Respondents in the study were mostly in late thirties and had formal education although very few had higher education. ICT usage was mainly for popular facilities like radio, television, telephone, video player and computer. Very few of the respondents were in the high user category although most fell in the medium perception class. Majority perceived the benefit from ICT as being moderate. Age and constraints had significant negative relationships with ICT use while perception and perceived benefit had positive significant relationships. Constraints experienced by respondents to use of ICT ranged from infrastructural to financial handicap. Many could not afford the use and some did not have the required education to handle the facilities.

Lexikos , 2011, DOI: 10.5788/17--609
Soos met o.a.

The response of red duikers Cephalophus natalensis to drive counts
A.E. Rowland
Koedoe : African Protected Area Conservation and Science , 1990, DOI: 10.4102/koedoe.v33i1.451
Abstract: The response of red duikers to drive counts conducted on three consecutive days was monitored. The disturbance level to the duiker community of this counting method is low, an it is unlikely to have any long-term effects. The red duiker flees rather than hides from the counting line, thereby increasing its chances of being counted.

Numerical solution of multiband k.p
A.E. Botha
South African Journal of Science , 2010, DOI: 10.4102/sajs.v105i7/8.83
Abstract: A new and very general method was developed for calculating the charge and spin-resolved electron tunnelling in type-II heterojunctions. Starting from a multiband k.p description of the bulk energy-band structure, a multiband k.p Riccati equation was derived. The reflection and transmission coefficients were obtained for each channel by integrating the Riccati equation over the entire heterostructure. Numerical instability was reduced through this method, in which the multichannel log-derivative of the envelope function matrix, rather than the envelope function itself, was propagated. As an example, a six-band k.p Hamiltonian was used to calculate the current-voltage characteristics of a 10-nm wide InAs/ GaSb/InAs single quantum well device which exhibited negative differential resistance at room temperature. The calculated current as a function of applied (bias) voltage was found to be in semiquantitative agreement with the experiment, a result which indicated that inelastic transport mechanisms do not contribute significantly to the valley currents measured in this particular device.
Optimal Design of Hysteretic Dampers Connecting 2-MDOF Adjacent Structures for Random Excitations
A.E. Bakeri
International Journal of Engineering , 2012,
Abstract: The dynamic behaviour of two adjacent multi-degrees-of-freedom (MDOF) structures connectedwith a hysteretic damper is studied under base acceleration. The base acceleration is modeled asstationary white-noise random process. The governing equations of motion of the connectedsystem are derived and solved using stochastic linearization technique. This study is concernedon the optimum design of the connecting dampers based on the minimization of the storedenergy in the entire system. This procedure is applied on three models. The first is two adjacentthree stories buildings, the second is ten stories buildings and the third is ten-story buildingadjacent to twenty-story building. The connecting damper is installed in three cases; in all floors, double dampers in different floors, and single damper. The results show that at these optimumproperties of the connecting dampers, the response of each structure is reduced and the energyof the entire system is reduced.
