Economic Evaluation of Early Peach (Prunus Persica L. batsch) Commercial Orchard under Different Irrigation Strategies  [PDF]

Abstract: The main aim of this paper is to evaluate the economic response of different irrigation water levels in an early ripening peach variety. In this sense, we evaluate the economics and overall water use efficiency. The test is designed with 4 irrigation water strategies. The economic indices used that use net margin show that all the alternatives are viable although the control with its Net Margin (NM)/Cost (C) of 23.6% is of particular note. This is followed by R50, the highest deficit treatment, with an
NM/C of 16.0%. The mean production cost was almost identical in the optimal treatment (control) and the R50 deficit treatment, €0.69 and €0.70, respectively.
R50 was the most efficient treatment, with a Water Use Efficiency (WUE) of 5.54 kg·m-3. The NM m-3 as economic efficiency index was the greatest in the control (0.74 € m-3), followed by R50 (0.65 € m-3), while the other treatments were far from these figures. Peach cultivation generates a lot of employment and in all cases the Number of Agricultural Jobs (NAJ) ha-1 was around 0.59. As regards the social efficiency of water, the deficit treatments we applied reached high values in this respect, reaching 181 NAJ hm-3 in R50.

Abstract: The emergence of new technology, incorporation of AI to the work floor and rapid pace of change and complexity around us, contribute to the need for a more sophisticated set of skills as key elements for the 21st century and centuries to come. This paper defends the idea that in the Imagination Age we will require more than just the mastery of traditional foundational literacies. Educational institutions should shift the focus towards the training of character qualities. Meta-competencies directly linked with character will provide students with the ability to deal with complex environments. While the importance of character qualities in education is not new, it will become more relevant to prepare the future generations. Educational institutions are urged to rethink their own methods and roles to prepare students to live and collaborate together with new forms of intelligence.

Abstract:

The purification of a lipase isoenzyme from an Aspergillus niger lipase A is reported in this manuscript. Purification was carried out in a simple adsorption step, in which the lipase was offered at low ionic strength to the commercially available C8 modified magnetic particles, MaKProt C8. When the isoenzyme was desorbed with a 0.2% solution of Triton X-100, the SDS-PAGE gel showed a single pure band with a molecular weight of 35 KDa. The purified fraction showed 66.75-fold purification compared with the crude extract. The pure fraction was characterized along with the crude extract and the lipase adsorbed on the MaKProt C8. The purified and the adsorbed lipase showed better activity for the tested substrates (p-nitrophenyl acetate, decanoate, myristate and palmitate) than the crude extract, the preferred substrates being myristate (26.7 μmol·min-1·mg-1) and decanoate (17.4 μmol·min-1·mg-1), respectively. The temperature and pH profiles showed no change for the three enzymes, the optimum temperature being 37°C and the best pH 7.0.

Building a Methodology for the Design of an Environmental Services Payment Programme for the Mangroves of Mexico  [PDF]

Abstract: Environmental Services Payment Programmes are not entirely new and they are more flexible than the usual command-and-control type of regulation. In the 1990s for example, an Environmental Services Payment programme was introduced to cope with the forestry system and pay benefits to farmers for the good that their forests would produce. This review examines the possibility of using Environmental Services Payment programmes for Mexican mangroves as they are an important resource against natural disasters, and reducing greenhouse gases in the Earth’s atmosphere, for example, and they are constantly invaded by the human race which impacts on their destruction. The review aims at constructing a methodology that can be applied to the implementation of Environmental Services Payment programmes. The value of this study is in aiming a straight arrow at the environmental problems outlined in this paper, problems that have not been fully resolved to date, especially in Mexico where it is not officially recognised that mangroves play an important role in the mitigation of greenhouse gases. Furthermore, Environmental Services Payment Programmes in Mexico have not pinpointed specific types of area. We conclude this paper with elaborating on our ten-point strategy for implementing Environmental Services Payment programmes which includes, in brief: 1) Fully accepting the importance of the mitigation of greenhouse gases via mangroves; 2) designing a Environmental/Ecosystem Services Payment Programme with particular emphasis on Mexican mangroves; 3) identifying specific environmental services and their level from local to international; 4) formation and implementation of a system of “whoever benefits must pay”; 5) building of a knowledge base of owners and others who benefit from environmental services; 6) hypothetical models of particular Environmental Services Payment programmes must be constructed; 7) clarifying who must pay; 8) grouping all sectors that must pay; 9) inspiring all actors to cooperate via 10) the impact of a Citizens’ Council, for example.
Economics of Coalbed Methane in North West Spain  [PDF]

Abstract: Coal during its carbonization process produces a gas. This gas, mainly formed by methane, can be used. The use of CBM (Coal bed methane) as an energetic resource is not much known in Spain. This work is the first step to enhance the development of this resource in Castilla y León. A theoretical review and a state of the art description have been carried out, taking into account all the factors that can influence in the development of a CBM project. Then CBM resources have been quantified by Castilla y León accurately for every coal bed. After that, technical feasibility has been used to evaluate total amount of gas that can be recovered. The last step was to evaluate economic feasibility to know how much gas could be economically profitable. This paper covers the economic factor and exploitation options of CBM in Castilla y León, considering technical parameters together with costs and economic requirements for the tow most promising areas in north-west Spain. The main findings include that a CBM system would be feasible in Guardo-Barruelo, however, the economic feasibility will be limited to long operation time of the wells and an increase of the prices of natural gas. In North Leon, the results show a high profitability even under low natural gas prices.

Abstract: Power generation industry has tackled waste reuse and valorisation for decades. Nevertheless, new technologies, like Circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boilers operating in oxy-combustion, have an important gap of knowledge in residues characterization and valorisation. This project will tackle this. Furthermore, as a result of the high quantity of waste that these installations generate new business models can be opened. The project aims at characterizing the residues from a large scale oxy-CFB facility with carbon, capture, use and storage (CCUS) focusing on the larger and main residues produced: fly ash, bottom ash, and algae production from captured CO2. An analysis of possible uses and treatment needs, such as additives or preparation for use in agriculture or industry, will be carried out. Best re-utilization and valorisation options will be stated for fly ash, bottom ash and algae, aiming for a novel combination of CO2 capture technologies with recovery of valuable materials from different wastes, addressing different and sustainable solutions for their reuse, enhancing the feasibility of CCUS, and combining research with the creation of new business models towards a green economy more attractive to the public perception.
