Foreign Ownership, Employment and Wages in Brazil: Evidence from Acquisitions, Divestments and Job Movers  [PDF]
Pedro S. Martins, Luiz A. Esteves
Technology and Investment (TI) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/ti.2015.61003
Abstract: How much do developing countries benefit from foreign investment? We contribute to this question by comparing the employment and wage practices of foreign and domestic firms in Brazil, using detailed matched firm-worker panel data. In order to control for unobserved worker differences, we examine both foreign acquisitions and divestments and worker mobility, including the joint estimation of firm and worker fixed effects. We find that changes in ownership do not tend to affect wages significantly, a result that holds both at the worker- and firm-levels. However, divestments are related to large job cuts, unlike acquisitions. On the other hand, movers from foreign to domestic firms take larger wage cuts than movers from domestic to foreign firms. Moreover, on average, the fixed effects of foreign firms are considerably larger than those of domestic firms, while worker selection effects are relatively small.
Study of Potential Health Damage Caused by Ultrafine Particles in Megacities Using a Pulmonary Deposition Model  [PDF]
Daniela S. de Almeida, Jorge A. Martins, Louren?o H. B. Vidotto, Leila D. Martins
Journal of Geoscience and Environment Protection (GEP) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/gep.2015.36011

The deposition of ultrafine particles, in the human respiratory tract, from four highly impacted megacities across the globe, was evaluated by using a pulmonary deposition model. It was found that, for the locations studied, an average of 62% of atmospheric particles was retained in the respiratory system. As expected, the model shows that smaller particles penetrate deeper in the airways. In addition, it’s shown that children are more susceptible than adults, retaining 8% more ultrafine particles.

Aspectos psicopatológicos e forenses de mulheres homicidas com diagnóstico de transtornos psicóticos primários: estudo de série de casos
Valen?a, Alexandre Martins;
Jornal Brasileiro de Psiquiatria , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0047-20852008000400005
Abstract: objective: evaluate a sample of women with primary psychotic disorders who received a safety measure and were admitted to inpatient forensic psychiatric care (n=8), due to homicide or attempted homicide (article 121 from the brazilian penal code). method: this is a serial cases study. the case records of all the women were retrospectively examined, including technical files and the evaluations of clinical experts. the final psychiatric diagnosis was obtained with a psychiatric evaluation of the patients and the examination of their records, using the diagnostic criteria of dsm-iv-tr. a standardized interview and positive and negative syndrome scale (panss) were also applied. results: seven patients received a diagnosis of schizophrenia and one a diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder. most victims (n=10; 60%) were family members of the patients. we found that 37.5% (n=3) of the patients had previous history of violent behavior. according to the initial psychiatric forensic evaluation, five (62.5%) of the patients from the sample had psychotic symptoms. auditory hallucinations were the most common psychotic symptoms. conclusion: the study of motivational factors for homicidal behavior may provide further knowledge for the implantation of therapeutic interventions in women with mental disorders and an increased risk for homicidal or other violent behaviors.
Contributions of the theory of multiple intelligences to the assessment of students' production in translator training courses
Martins, Marcia A. P.;
Ensaio: Avalia??o e Políticas Públicas em Educa??o , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-40362011000300011
Abstract: this article argues for an approach to the assessment of students' translation assignments that is informed by the theory of multiple intelligences proposed by howard gardner in 1983 and expanded in his later work. this approach is based on two main strategies: (i) diversity of forms of assessment, offering learners the opportunity to have their performance assessed in ways which are compatible with their more developed intelligences, and (ii) interaction and negotiation between not only teacher and learners, but also among peers, to allow for the interchange that different proposed meanings and solutions require. it is now being tested in the undergraduate translator training program at the pontifícia universidade católica do rio de janeiro, brazil, and the preliminary results indicate that it may successfully help develop and assess students' different intellectual potentials.
The influence of calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and silica on vanadium precipitation in acidic sulfate solutions
Martins, A. H.;
Brazilian Journal of Chemical Engineering , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-66322000000200010
Abstract: the experimental research work was carried out in accordance with the factorial design statistical method to evaluate and analyze the influence of calcium, magnesium, silica and phosphorus on the precipitation of vanadates. precipitation was performed by neutralization with h2so4 of alkaline aqueous solutions containing vanadium pentoxide (v2o5) at 60± 2oc. the experimental responses measured were percent of vanadium recovery and vanadium pentoxide content in the precipitate. these impurities are considered representative of those present in a leach liquor from the ore obtained at campo alegre de lourdes (brazil). the operational variables in this work were used under optimum conditions as determined by the statistical approach. among the impurities under study, phosphorus exhibited the highest negative influence on the experimental responses. phosphorus diminished the percent of vanadium recovered from 98.9 to 34.5 and the vanadium oxide content in the precipitate from 91.2 % to 39.3 %.
América Nuestra: Glauber Rocha e o cinema cubano
Villa?a, Mariana Martins;
Revista Brasileira de História , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-01882002000200011
Abstract: this article develops some issues of my dissertation, called "tropicalismo (1967-1969) e grupo de experimentación sonora (1969-1972): engajamento e experimentalismo na can??o popular, no brasil e em cuba", and focuses the relationship between the instituto cubano del arte e indústria cinematográficos (icaic) and the most important brazilian filmaker glauber rocha. he and alfredo guevara, director of icaic, exchanged letters since 1960. after being invited by guevera, glauber went to cuba and worked at the institute from november 1971 to december 1972. based on these facts, this article analyzes the influence of the glauberian production on the cubans filmakers and his role in the debate about the new latin-american cine.
Natural history of Holoaden luederwaldti (Amphibia: Strabomantidae: Holoadeninae) in southeastern of Brazil
Martins, Itamar A.;
Zoologia (Curitiba) , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1984-46702010000100007
Abstract: this study reports the rediscovery of holoaden luederwaldti miranda-ribeiro, 1920 and provides information on the distribution, sexual dimorphism, reproduction and vocalization of a population of this species in campos do jord?o, s?o paulo (southeastern brazil). sampling was carried out in the parque estadual de campos do jord?o (pecj) from october 2005 through december 2008. collecting was conducted using pitfall traps with a drift-fence on different altitudinal gradients (1,540 m, 1,780 m and 2,000 m a.s.l.). fifty-two specimens of h. luederwaldti were collected in the pecj. the mean snout-vent length (svl) was 36.17 mm for males and 42.61 mm for females, indicating sexual dimorphism in body size. holoaden luederwaldti occurred during the warm-rainy months. the population was distributed between 1500 and 2000 m, and the greater abundance was registered in well preserved forest areas. mature females contained from 36 to 41 oocytes and the mean of oocyte diameter was 3.72 mm. the advertisement call of h. luederwaldti consists of simple notes composed of three harmonics. the record of the population of h. luederwaldti in the pecj has reinforced the importance of investigating different areas of the forest when conducting faunal surveys.
