Abstract: after the contamination with hiv of 6 patients by an american dentist, great concern about the work of hiv-positive health care workers emerged. in spite of the good effects of preventive programs (also including other viruses more contagious than hiv, like the hepatitis virus), that concern is still confuse and misunderstood, blurred by social prejudice and intolerance with regard to hiv patients. this article shows that a policy of segregation of hiv-positive health workers is neither fair nor effective to improve biosafety. on the other hand, a responsible behavior by the positive worker is appropriate, avoiding to participate on exposure-prone proceedings. if an accident happens, anti-hiv prophylaxis with drugs, active and passive immunization against hbv should be offered to the patient. acting on a better informed basis wil brings other benefits and turn possible a new way, more human and less positivist, on facing the challenges of this new epidemic.

Abstract: Após o caso do dentista americano que contaminou seis de seus pacientes com HIV, surgiu grande preocupa o acerca de trabalhadores da saúde HIV-positivos. Essa preocupa o, embora razoável quando conduzida de forma a incluir também normas de prote o contra outros patógenos mais contagiosos que o HIV, tende a ser segregante e confusa, obscurecida pela representa o social estigmatizante da doen a. O artigo traz argumentos demonstrando a inexistência de motivos para impedimento compulsório do trabalho dos trabalhadores da saúde portadores, mas enfatiza a necessidade de comportamento responsável por parte dos infectados, que devem se abster de participar de procedimentos propensos à exposi o. Essa responsabilidade, por sua vez, só funcionará em contexto de n o segrega o. Se ocorrer acidente, profilaxia com anti-retrovirais e imuniza o (ativa e passiva) contra hepatite "B" deve ser considerada para o paciente exposto. S o oferecidas bases para constru o de postura melhor informada e mais aberta aos desafios trazidos pela epidemia de HIV/AIDS.

Abstract: RESUMO: O estudo procura acompanhar a evolu o do interesse dos pesquisadores pela fra o dos alimentos que, em 1885, foi chamada “fibra”, representando a ganga sem valor nutricional, qualificada para, no máximo, favorecer o peristaltismo no tubo digestivo e aumentar o volume dos dejectos. Quando observa es clínicas, divulgadas na década de 1960, apontaram para a eventual correla o entre o consumo de “fibra” e a ausência ou escassez de moléstias comuns em coletividades industrializadas, abriu-se imensa perspectiva de investiga o nessa área. è o caminho que vem sendo percorrido nessa trilha, visando a confirmar e a explicar o papel dos vários integrantes da fra o fibra dietética, que a revis o pretende tornar claro, mostrando, também, as trilhas que se abrem para o futuro. Comparison of Chemical Elements on Carious & Normal Premolar’s Enamel Layers Using Energy Dispersive X Ray Spectrometer (X Ray-EDS)  [PDF]

Abstract: Objectives: To compare the distribution of chemical elements among the carious and normal enamel layers on teenagers, using energy dispersive X ray spectrometer (EDS Rx). Materials and Methods: The EDS Rx analyzer is integrated to scanner electron microscope. The macro and mi-croelements were made in 30 premolars of teenager: 14 carious enamel layers and 16 normal enamel layers. Results: The quantitative and qualitative microanalyses of macro and microele-ments were found between the enamel layers of carious and normal premolar in term of variation and concentration expressed in percentage atomic weight. The statistical data analysis of ANOVA showed that the macroelements [C, Ca, P] and the microelements [Al, Cl, Mg, Na] were significantly different (P < 0.05) while, the macro [O] and the microelements [In, Si, W, S] were not significantly different (P < 0.05) among the carious and normal enamel layers. Moreover, the microelements Sb, Ba, Br, I, Ir, K, Pt, Sc, Sr, Sn and Yb were absent in carious enamel layers and present in normal enamel layers. Conclusion: The macro and microelements differ in composition and variation from the external to the internal enamel layers between the carious and the normal premolars. However, the deficiency or excess of these elements in the enamel layers determines the degree of susceptibility to carious and other dental disease. Clinical Relevance: The carious enamel in dental structure could be a major dental problem due to the deficiency or excess of macro and microele-ments which are responsible for secondary or recurrent caries, discoloration, pulpal inflammation, re-infection, abscess in jaw bone and dental disease.

Abstract: a new equation for the density contrast is derived in the framework of reexamined newtonian cosmology if we take into account adiabatic matter creation in the universe. the age of the universe and the reach of non linear regime of the density contrast are usually treated separately in the literature and this may leadtocontroversial conclusions regarding the most adequate scenario to describe the universe. we relate the age of the universe and the growing mode of the density contrast by introducing a variable x that relates both of them, so that both aspects are treated simultaneously. we apply this procedure to the friedmann type model where the source of particle production is y = 3nbh.

Abstract: soil color is widely recognized as a primary property of soil identification. soil physical, mineralogical, and chemical properties can be derived from assessing soil color. the current framework of soil classification, at the second hierarquical level of the brazilian system of classification, requires that the soil colour of the diagnostic b horizon be determined by comparison with the munsell color charts, or equivalent. this process of classification is extremely subjective and time-consuming, limiting the accuracy, transferability, and usefulness of the procedure. this paper aims at a comparison of the conventional soil color determination with the colormeter method to evaluate possible implications in soil classification. five soil scientists were invited to determine the hue of 80 soil samples by comparison with the munsell color chart. the hue of the samples was obtained with a colormeter as well, also according to munsell's notes. the statistical analyses determined correlation coefficients, precision index, clustering forms, and mean tendencies of hue determinations. correlation coefficients varying from 0.68 to 0.94 showed that soil scientists produced precise data, fundamental for the validity of the study. however, the measurements realized by soil scientists were not coincident, and were quite different from the colormeter measures. the values of precision index indicated an agreement of only 8.75 % in moist samples and 17.5 % in dry ones. the divergences in hue determination would lead to mistakes in soil classification. the evaluation of average tendencies indicated that the pedologists overestimated color values in relation to colorimeter, resulting in alterations in soil classification.

Energy of Ni/Ni$_{3}$Al Interface: a Temperature-Dependent Theoretical Study

Abstract: Using plane wave {\textit{ab-initio}} and Monte Carlo techniques, the Ni/Ni$_{3}$Al interfacial energy is studied and the results from the different techniques are critically compared. Two issues deserved special attention: the dependency of the interface energy with the supercell size, for the {\textit{ab-initio}} calculations, and the temperature dependence of the interface energy. The calculations show that from 0K up to 1000 K that energy decreases by 1 mJ/m$^2$.
Black Hole Formation with an Interacting Vacuum Energy Density

Abstract: We discuss the gravitational collapse of a spherically symmetric massive core of a star in which the fluid component is interacting with a growing vacuum energy density. The influence of the variable vacuum in the collapsing core is quantified by a phenomenological \beta-parameter as predicted by dimensional arguments and the renormalization group approach. For all reasonable values of this free parameter, we find that the vacuum energy density increases the collapsing time but it cannot prevent the formation of a singular point. However, the nature of the singularity depends on the values of \beta. In the radiation case, a trapped surface is formed for \beta<1/2 whereas for \beta>1/2, a naked singularity is developed. In general, the critical value is \beta=1-2/3(1+\omega), where the \omega-parameter describes the equation of state of the fluid component.
