Data Mining on Crash Simulation Data

Abstract: The work presented in this paper is part of the cooperative research project AUTO-OPT carried out by twelve partners from the automotive industries. One major work package concerns the application of data mining methods in the area of automotive design. Suitable methods for data preparation and data analysis are developed. The objective of the work is the re-use of data stored in the crash-simulation department at BMW in order to gain deeper insight into the interrelations between the geometric variations of the car during its design and its performance in crash testing. In this paper a method for data analysis of finite element models and results from crash simulation is proposed and application to recent data from the industrial partner BMW is demonstrated. All necessary steps from data pre-processing to re-integration into the working environment of the engineer are covered.
Long term NO2 measurements in Hong Kong using LED based Long Path Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy

Abstract: In this study we present the first long term measurements of atmospheric nitrogen dioxide (NO2) using a LED based Long Path Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (LP-DOAS) instrument. This instrument is measuring continuously in Hong Kong since December 2009, first in a setup with a 550 m absorption path and then with a 3820 m path at about 30 m to 50 m above street level. The instrument is using a high power blue light LED with peak intensity at 450 nm coupled into the telescope using a Y-fibre bundle. The LP-DOAS instrument measures NO2 concentrations in the Kowloon Tong and Mong Kok district of Hong Kong and we compare the measurement results to concentrations reported by monitoring stations operated by the Hong Kong Environmental Protection Department in that area. Hourly averages of coinciding measurements are in reasonable agreement (R = 0.74). Furthermore, we used the long-term data set to validate the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) NO2 data product. Monthly averaged LP-DOAS and OMI measurements correlate well (R = 0.84) when comparing the data for the OMI overpass time. We analyzed weekly patterns in both data sets and found that the LP-DOAS detects a clear weekly cycle with a reduction on weekends during rush hour peaks, whereas OMI is not able to observe this weekly cycle due to its fix overpass time.

Abstract: The South African endemic bee genus Redivivoides Michener, 1981 is revised and redefined. The genus comprises seven species, six of which are described here as new: Redivivoides capensis sp. nov. ♀♂, R. eardleyi sp. nov. ♀, R. kamieskroonensis sp. nov. ♀, R. karooensis sp. nov. ♀♂, R. namaquaensis sp. nov. ♀♂ and R. variabilis sp. nov. ♀♂. A key to species is provided.

Abstract: I present an algorithm that, given a number $n \geq 1$, computes a compact representation of the set of all noncrossing acyclic digraphs with $n$ nodes. This compact representation can be used as the basis for a wide range of dynamic programming algorithms on these graphs. As an illustration, along with this note I am releasing the implementation of an algorithm for counting the number of noncrossing acyclic digraphs of a given size. The same tabulation can be modified to count other classes of combinatorial structures, including weakly connected noncrossing acyclic digraphs, general noncrossing digraphs, noncrossing undirected graphs.

Abstract: We investigated temperature dependent Raman spectra of the one-dimensional spin-ladder compound SrCu2O3. At low temperatures a two-magnon peak is identified at 3160+/-10 cm^(-1) and its temperature dependence analyzed in terms of a thermal expansion model. We find that the two-magnon peak position must include a cyclic ring exchange of J_cycl/J_perp=0.09-0.25 with a coupling constant along the rungs of J_perp approx. 1215 cm^(-1) (1750 K) in order to be consistent with other experiments and theoretical results.
