'n Model vir die bevordering van die geestesgesondheid van onafhanklike sakemanne
A. Gmeiner,M. Poggenpoel
South African Journal of Industrial Psychology , 1998, DOI: 10.4102/sajip.v24i1.641
Abstract: A model for the promotion of mental health of independent businessmen. In this article the research is described that had as goal the generation of a practice-orientated model for the promotion of the mental health of independent businessmen. The research design utilised a qualitative, theory-generating design, based on the model of Dickoff, James and Wiedenbach (1968). Reliability and validity of this research was ensured by utilizing the measures of reliability and validity of Woods and Catanzaro (1988). The model was described in terms of structure and process and, lastly, evaluated according to criteria set by Chinn and Jacobs (1987).

South African Journal of Industrial Psychology , 1994, DOI: 10.4102/sajip.v20i3.576
Abstract: The inner experiences of the independant businessman. In this study the inner experiences of the independant businessman is described and analised. An exploratory, descriptive, qualitative and contextual design was used. Phenomenological semistructured interviews were conducted with a purposively selected sample of fifteen independant businessmen. A literature control was conducted as a reliability measure. The insight gained from this research contributes to a better understanding of the total life experiences of the independant businessman. The results can be operationalised in further research and practice with a view to promoting the mental health of the independant businessman. 'n Literatuurkontrolc is uitgevoer as betroubaarhcidsmaatreel.
Precipitation observation using microwave backhaul links in the alpine and pre-alpine region of Southern Germany
C. Chwala,A. Gmeiner,W. Qiu,S. Hipp
Hydrology and Earth System Sciences Discussions , 2012, DOI: 10.5194/hessd-9-741-2012
Abstract: Measuring rain rates over complex terrain is afflicted with large uncertainties because rain gauges are influenced by orography and weather radars are mostly not able to look into mountain valleys. We apply a new method to estimate near surface rain rates exploiting attenuation data from commercial microwave links in the alpine region of Southern Germany. Received signal level (RSL) data is recorded minutely with small data loggers at the towers and then sent to a database server via GSM. Due to the large RSL fluctuations in periods without rain, the determination of attenuation caused by precipitation is not straightforward. To be able to continuously process the RSL data from July 2010 to October 2010, we introduce a new method to detect wet and dry periods using spectral time series analysis. We show the performance and limitations of the method and analyse the derived rain rates compared to rain gauge and weather radar measurements. The resulting correlations differ for different links and reach values of R2 = 0.80 for the link-gauge comparison and R2 = 0.84 for the link-radar comparison.

Die schwedische Parlamentswahl 2010. Hochphase und Endpunkt der starren Blockpolitik?
Jens Gmeiner
Nordeuropaforum , 2011,
Abstract: For the second time in Swedish post-war history a centre-right alliance was re-elected to government on 19th September 2010. However, the four-party coalition headed by Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt was only able to form a minority government. An overall majority was prevented by the first time entry to parliament of the far-right party Sweden Democrats (Sverigedemokraterna). Beforehand, the election campaign had featured two closed and opposing party political camps of the right and left wing political spectrum. In this article, the election campaign, the election result and the success of the Sweden Democrats are closely analysed. The article argues that the two political camps showed strong signs of disintegration and internal divisions after the election. Thus, the general election in 2010 can be interpreted as both high and end point of the rigid polarised camp politics.
Properties of Persistent Mutual Information and Emergence
Peter Gmeiner
Mathematics , 2012,
Abstract: The persistent mutual information (PMI) is a complexity measure for stochastic processes. It is related to well-known complexity measures like excess entropy or statistical complexity. Essentially it is a variation of the excess entropy so that it can be interpreted as a specific measure of system internal memory. The PMI was first introduced in 2010 by Ball, Diakonova and MacKay as a measure for (strong) emergence. In this paper we define the PMI mathematically and investigate the relation to excess entropy and statistical complexity. In particular we prove that the excess entropy is an upper bound of the PMI. Furthermore we show some properties of the PMI and calculate it explicitly for some example processes. We also discuss to what extend it is a measure for emergence and compare it with alternative approaches used to formalize emergence.
