Reproductive performance of the mite Brevipalpus phoenicis (Geijskes, 1939) on citrus and coffee, using life table parameters

Abstract: the flat-mite brevipalpus phoenicis (geijskes, 1939) (acari: tenuipalpidae) is considered important in citrus (citrus spp.) and coffee plants (coffea spp.) in brazil, and is known as the leprosis and coffee ring spot mite, as being a vector of the citrus leprosis rhabdovirus - citlv and coffee ring spot virus - corsv. the objective of this work is to find out about the reproductive success of b. phoenicis on citric fruits and coffee leaves by fertility life table parameters and its biology. the experiments were carried out in laboratory conditions at 25 ± 2 °c, 70 ± 10% of relative humidity and 14 h of photophase. the lengths of embryonic and post-embryonic periods were different due to the host where the mite was reared. b. phoenicis showed better development and higher survival and fecundity in citric fruits than coffee leaves. the intrinsic rate of the population increase (rm) was 0.128 and 0.090 - females/female/day on citric fruits and coffee leaves, respectively. the citric fruits were more appropriate for the development of b. phoenicis than coffee leaves.

Abstract: the developing brain requires a genetic plan, established by the evolutionary history of human species, but it is also very sensitive to the surrounding environment. environmental stimuli can modify the structure of neural circuits, refining and making synapses, which are the target of neurotransmitters, more efficient by electrical activity and chemical messengers. the aim of the present study is to discuss theoretically how both plasticity and previous specification of brain systems coexist in the brain. the conclusion shows the importance to integrate aspects of social learning and biology in building and refining the various humane skills.
L X-Rays RYIED Oscillations and Proton-NMRD of Gd2O3 Nanoparticles

Abstract: Recently, it was shown that relative yields of X-rays induced by ion impact are not constant but depend on beam energy. In the framework of this problem, pellets of Gd2O3 and a Gd chelate, Gd-DOTA, as well as a 5 nm in diameter Gd2O3 nanoparticles dispersion on a polycarbonate Nuclepore filter, were studied. In this work, it is shown that after subtraction of known matrix effects, relative yield variations still present different patterns for Gd2O3 pellet and Gd2O3 nanoparticles. Proton NMRD 1() data for Gd2O3 nanoparticles and Gd-DOTA water solutions published by Bridot et al. and Toth et al., respectively, were reproduced using a model for paramagnetic substances in water solutions and identical electronic relaxation times. The analysis of both techniques results points collective electron behaviour as the explanation for the different observations on X-ray data of Gd2O3 nanoparticles and bulk material.

Abstract:

Appropriate information on solar resources is very important for a variety of technological areas, such as agriculture, meteorology, forestry engineering, and water resources, particularly for an innovative technology such as solar energy. In the market entry process of an innovative technology such as solar energy, the increased and sustained deployment of this energy technology strongly depends on the economy and reliability of the solar systems installed. The economy and reliability of a system are the consequences of a well-prepared project, resulting from an accurate knowledge of the solar resource available. Therefore, knowing the potential of the solar resource accurately is not only a need but also an imperative for the larger diffusion and use of the solar energy. The existing sources of the information on radiation in MG are quite varied, both at the institutional level and in different types of publications. The publications containing this information are project reports, internal reports of institutions, and several magazines. Thus, the quality of the data varies considerably, the information presents spatial and temporal discontinuity; moreover, the instruments and the measurement units are not standardised. The general objective of this paper is to recover, to qualify, to standardize, and to make available the best information from the current existing solar resource in MG, Brazil, either in the form of isoline charts of solar radiation or a numerical database. In this paper, the procedure to elaborate the maps of daily solar radiation and insolation, along with the monthly and annual averages, is described. We present one map with the localisation of the recording stations in addition to one annual and 12 monthly contour maps. The map of the daily global solar irradiation and the annual average determined in this project show that solar radiation on the state of Minas Gerais ranges from 4.5 to 6.5 kWh/m2. The maximum values occur in the northern region of Minas Gerais, and the minimum values occur in the southeast region, where there are areas of higher altitude (Mantiqueira and Serra do Caparaó) and the rainfall is more intense, with total annual rainfall greater

Quality of life and associated factors for caregivers of functionally impaired elderly people

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Lifestyle changes, factors inherent to the caregiver's family and social environment, and physical and mental aspects determine a caregiver's quality of life (QOL). OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the QOL and associated factors for caregivers of functionally impaired elderly people. METHOD: This was a cross-sectional study that analyzed data from a home-based care survey. The study sites were the homes of elderly people enrolled in Family Health Centers (Unidades de Saúde da Família) in Jequié, Bahia, Brazil. The sample consisted of 40 caregivers of functionally impaired elderly people. The instrument consisted of demographic data, health status, the Perceived Family Support Inventory, the Social Support Satisfaction Scale, and the World Health Organization Quality of Life Assessment (WHOQOL-BREF). The data were analyzed using a descriptive analysis and the chi-squared test at a 5% significance level, performed in SPSS version 15.0. RESULTS: An association was found between the WHOQOL-BREF physical domain and the presence of sequelae (p=0.006), affective-cognitive inconsistency (p=0.009), and being the primary caregiver (p=0.002). The psychological domain showed an association with the presence of sequelae (p=0.006), the environment domain with the presence of diseases (p<0.001) and being the primary caregiver (p=0.033), and the social relations domain with the presence of diseases (p<0.001). CONCLUSION: The presence of sequelae or diseases, affective-cognitive inconsistency, and being the primary caregiver were related to decreases in their QOL. Abstract: Currently, millions of tons of steel are produced worldwide. This has become a serious economic and environmental challenge because the ores used for steel production are nonrenewable resources and the production generates huge amount of waste. In this study, we identified and investigated the ability of bacteria from steelmaking waste with low and high zinc concentration to promote leaching of zinc, when enriched by acidic (pH 2) culture conditions. The bioleaching assays indicated removal of Zn, as in chemical leaching. Bacterial communities from crude and enrichment culture wastes were characterized by the 16S rRNA gene. Phylogenetic analysis of the generated clone libraries revealed predominance of Proteobacteria and Firmicutes. The Actino- bacteria, Bacteroidetes, Cyanobacteria, and Deinococcus-Thermus phyla were also encountered. The clones were most closely related to cultivable heterotrophic bacteria. Different genera were identified including iron redox cycling and leaching bacteria such as Chromobacterium, Aeromonas, Escherichia, Bacillus, and Ochrobactrum. These data add significant new information on bacteria which survive in extremely acidic conditions. They are distantly related to typical acidophiles responsible for the leaching process, which makes them good candidates for future studies on metal bioleaching.
Practice of walking and its association with perceived environment among elderly Brazilians living in a region of low socioeconomic level

Abstract: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 385 elderly people aged 60 years and over. To evaluate walking, the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), long version (leisure and transport modules) was used. The environment was evaluated by means of the Neighborhood Environmental Walkability Scale (NEWS) (adapted Brazilian version). For the statistical analysis, multiple logistic regression models were created separately for men and women. The practice of at least 150 minutes a week of walking was the dependent variable, and the variables of environmental perception were the independent variables. All the models were controlled for schooling level and age.The proportion of elderly people active in walking was 56.9% for the men and 26.4% for the women. The perception of the presence of soccer fields (OR = 4.12) and their proximity, within ten minutes' walk from home (OR = 3.43), were associated with the practice of walking among the men. The perception of the presence of public squares (OR = 4.70) and the proximity of primary healthcare units, within ten minutes' walk from home (OR = 3.71), were associated with the practice of walking among the women. An association with adequate perception of vehicle traffic remained at the threshold of significance for the women.Accessibility of leisure structures such as football fields and public squares and of health services such as primary healthcare units were important environmental variables associated with the practice of walking among elderly people living in a region of low socioeconomic level in Brazil. These variables need to be taken into consideration when aiming to promote the practice of walking among elderly people living in similar regions.Although the participation in physical activities is related to many benefits for health, studies have indicated high prevalence of inactive elderly people in different countries around the world [1].Walking is one of the most accessible forms of physical activity
A novel postharvest rot of okra pods caused by Rhizoctonia solani in Brazil

Abstract: okra pods with unusual brown lesions and rot were collected in a local supermarket in brasília df. the objective of this paper was to characterize the causal agent, to fulfill koch's postulates and to determine some conditions conducive to disease. the pathogen was identified as rhizoctonia solani based on morphological characteristics which fitted the fungus description, such as pale to brown hyphae, with nearly right-angled side branches constricted at the base, hyphal cells 6-10 μm wide with a septum near the base. five isolates were obtained from infected pods and identified as ag 1-ib anastomosis group. wounded or unwounded okra pods cv. santa cruz 47 were inoculated with mycelium disks of r. solani and kept in humid chambers at 12 oc or 25 oc. after seven days at 25 oc, both wounded and unwounded pods were completely rotted and brown, while those kept at 12 oc showed small lesions ranging from 0.6 to 1.0 mm only in wounded pods. the pathogen was able to grow in different materials used for assembling crates and packs of horticultural products, such as pinewood, corrugated carton, plastic, styrofoam and newspaper sheets when kept in humid chambers (24 oc, 96 % rh). the disease occurrence can be related to careless handling practices and to the transmission of r. solani propagules by infected plant debris or soil particles. this is the first report of rhizoctonia solani causing postharvest rot in okra pods in brazil.
Copper coatings on stainless steel by laser cladding

Abstract: Copper laser cladding was performed on AISI 304L stainless steel. Some process parameters like process speed and focal point were analysed and it was established its influence on the quality of the coating. Simple track coatings were achieved with good aspect, good adherence and good surface finishing. Therefore, a reference basis for further developments related to industrial application, was created. Foi estudada a aplica o de revestimentos de Cobre sobre ago inoxidável AISI 304L, pela técnica de Laser Cladding. Analisam-se alguns aspectos do processo, relacionando-os com a qualidade do revestimento. é também discutida a influencia de vários parametros do processo como a velocidade de processamento e distancia focal. Tendo-se obtido revestimentos de pista simples de Cobre com urna boa aparência, uma elevada aderência e um bom acabamento superficial, criou-se urna base de referência para estudos posteriores nomeadamente de aplica o multi-pista tendo em vista a aplica o industrial.
