Diffusion-limited aggregation: A relationship between surface thermodynamics and crystal morphology

Abstract: We have combined the original diffusion-limited aggregation model introduced by Witten and Sander with the surface thermodynamics of the growing solid aggregate. The theory is based on the consideration of the surface chemical potential as a thermodynamic function of the temperature and nearest-neighbor configuration. The Monte Carlo simulations on a two-dimensional square lattice produce the broad range of shapes such as fractal dendritic structures, densely branching patterns, and compact aggregates. The morphology diagram illustrating the relationship between the model parameters and cluster geometry is presented and discussed.
Diffusion-limited aggregation: A revised mean-field approach

Abstract: We propose a revision of the classic mean-field approach of diffusion-limited aggregation (DLA) model originally introduced by Witten and Sander [Phys. Rev. Lett. 47, 1400 (1981)]. The derived nonlinear mean-field equations providing lattice anisotropy are used to model diffusional growth on square lattice in linear and circular source geometries. The overall cluster shapes obtained from the mean-field calculations are found to satisfy the known scaling behavior experimentally observed for DLA simulations.

Abstract: Structure refinement of high-resolution X-ray powder diffraction data of the title compound gave the composition Li1.865CoP2O7, which is also verified by the ICP measurement. Two Co sites exist in the structure: one is a CoO5 square pyramid and the other is a CoO6 octahedron. They share edges and are further interconnected through P2O7 groups, forming a three-dimensional framework, which exhibits different kinds of intersecting tunnels containing Li cations and could be of great interest in Li ion battery chemistry. The structure also exhibits cation disorder with 13.5% Co residing at the lithium (Li1) site. Co seems to have an average oxidation state of 2.135, as obtained from the strutural stochiometry that closely supports the magnetic susceptibility findings.

Abstract: One of the main socio-economic problems in Russia is the high cost and the poor condition of housing.Such goals as cost reduction, reducing installation time and increasing the service life of structures are accomplishing by creating new technologies of erecting buildings and developing ways ofquickconstruction, using different types of fixed formwork. One of themis textstone.Textstone is an artificial construction stone, containing on the outer surface the reinforcing fine-mesh shell with multifunctional properties, formed by the interwoven threads of a vigorous fixed formwork textile material (basalt, linen, silica and other glass yarns) adhered by binding material. The innovative construction technology of production and installation of a new generation of textstone buildings has been registered as a brand TextStone. The fundamental difference between texstone and reinforced concrete and all known building materials is that the whole outer surface of solidified light binders is protected by strong, vigorous and fixed formwork made from inexpensive textile materials. Manufacturing textile shells allows using it as an internal finishing material, reducing or eliminating the cost of finishing work.The use of fixed textile construction shutters during the construction of buildings has obvious technical, economic, operational, sanitary and environmental benefits: short construction time (from 3 to 10 days), compact packaging and light weight of fabric shells, high fire resistance, frost resistance, ease of engineering services installation in the hollow communicating shells; minimal amount of finishing, roofing, heat and noise insulation works. Texstone is a durable solid monolithic construction that provides high viability and earthquakes, hurricanes wind, solar sultriness and frost resistance. Material complies with all sanitary and environmental requirements. Due to such physical, mechanical, operational, sanitary and ecological characteristics of the structure, long life and reduced assembly time textstone has great prospects for development and application in the future.
The polymorphism of α2B-adrenergic receptor gene — a new genetic marker of the hereditary sick sinus syndrome

Abstract: Aim. To study the association of the hereditary sick sinus syndrome (SSS) with gene α2B-adrenergic receptor (ADRA2B) polymorphism.Material and methods. 29 families with hereditary primary SSS from the database of the Chair of Therapy № 1 of Krasnoyarsk State Medical University named after prof. V.F. Voyno-Yasenetsky were included in the study. Group 1 included probands (20 women and 9 men, 58±0.15 y.o.), group 2 – proband relatives of I, II and III degree (65 males and 68 females, 39±0.13 y.o.), group 3 (control) — 89 healthy volunteers. Clinical examination (physical examination, ECG, bicycle ergometry, ECG monitoring, atropine test, electrophysiological study, echocardiography) was performed in all probands and their relatives. The diagnosis of SSS was confirmed by transesophageal left atrium stimulation in 75 individuals. Genotypic examination of gene ADRA2B I/D polymorphism was performed in 213 individuals: 75 SSS-patients, 49 their healthy relatives, 89 healthy volunteers.Results. 3 types of ADRA2B genotypes (II — homozygous wild, ID — heterozygous, DD — homozygous mutant) were founded by allele-specific polymerase chain reaction. Significant prevalence of the homozygous genotype of more rare alleles DD in SSS-patients (28±5.2%) compared to the control group (8.99±3.0%) was found.Conclusion. Study of the genetic marker can be used to identify predisposition to hereditary SSS in the population and individual-family level. SSS due to mutations in genes that regulate cell function of sinus node and the sinoatrial conduct occurs, apparently, extremely rarely.

Idiopathic sick sinus syndrome

Abstract: Aim. To evaluate changes in hereditary burden of sick sinus syndrome (SSS) in families of patients with SSS and assess heart rate variability (HRV) in patients with SSS.Results. 33 families of patients with SSS were examined. Clinical study, ECG-Holter monitoring, atropine test, transesophageal left atrial stimulation, echocardiography, veloergometry were fulfilled in all probands and their relatives in 1990 and 2005-2006. Cardiorhythmography was done in patients with SSS only in 2005-2006.Results. Increase in hereditary burden with SSS from 31 to 35% is registered during 15 years. Significant growth of patients with SSS was observed among daughters (from 50 to 71%), nephews (from 33 to 50%) and nieces (from 0 to 20%). HRV analysis shows prevalence of sympathetic system activity in patients with SSS.Conclusion. Growth of hereditary burden with SSS especially among female relatives is shown. HRV analysis can be used for SSS diagnostics.

Abstract: Plant hormone auxin regulates many aspects of plant growth and development. PIN-FORMED (PIN) gene family encodes transmembrane proteins, which mediate auxin efflux. PIN proteins are asymmetrically localized within cells, thereby forming in tissue auxin concentration gradients and maxima. Auxin has various effects on PIN1 expression in a cell providing for both positive and negative feedbacks on its own transport [1]. Earlier we proposed that this dual regulation determines stem cell niche maintenance in root apical meristem [2].Using two reporter lines of Arabidopsis thaliana we investigated dose-response auxin regulation of PIN1 expression at the levels of RNA and protein. PIN1::PIN1-GFP containing part of PIN1 coding region reveals both transcriptional and posttranscriptional regulation, whereas pPIN1::GUS displays only transcriptional regulation. The reporter line pPIN1::GUS[-1388;+82] was created by authors; PIN1::PIN1-GFP was provided by Alexis Peaucelle (INRA, France). PIN1::PIN1-GFP and pPIN1::GUS seedlings were grown in a 16 hours light/8 hours dark cycle at 25/22°C on 1/2MS with sucrose. Before microscopic analysis 3 dag seedlings were incubated for 24 h in liquid 1/2MS supplemented with different IAA concentrations. The experimental images were analyzed using ImageJ program.We found the following changes in PIN1 expression pattern in the root for both lines under low and moderate auxin treatments: (1) increased domain of PIN1 expression in the root meristem; (2) ectopic expression in epidermis and cortex, (3) increased level of PIN1 expression in provascular cells. However, we observed differences in PIN1 expression between the lines: in columella and under high auxin concentrations. The experimental data suggests posttranslational PIN1 regulation by high auxin concentrations. A mathematical model [2] was extended to describe the observed phenomena. The model simulation well agrees with the experimental data and predicts new aspects on the mechanisms of auxin transport in the root meristem.
