RESPUESTA DE CRECIMIENTO Y TOLERANCIA A METALES PESADOS DE Cyperus elegans Y Echinochloa polystachya INOCULADAS CON UNA RIZOBACTERIA AISLADA DE UN SUELO CONTAMINADO CON HIDROCARBUROS DERIVADOS DEL PETRóLEO

Abstract: Se ha demostrado que las interacciones benéficas entre cultivos de plantas y bacterias son útiles en la disminución de la toxicidad producida por metales, así como en el aporte de nutrientes esenciales; por ello, las comunidades microbianas han sido empleadas para la biorremediación, en particular las rizobacterias promotoras del crecimiento (PGPR s por sus siglas en inglés). Este estudio evaluó la respuesta del crecimiento y la tolerancia a metales pesados de dos especies de plantas de pantano: Cyperus elegans y Echinochloa polystachya, inoculadas con una rizobacteria solubilizadora de fosfatos identificada como Bacillus sp. y expuestas a cadmio (Cd) y zinc (Zn). El crecimiento de ambas especies se favoreció en presencia de la rizobacteria; sin embargo, las plántulas crecidas con los metales e inoculadas con la rizobacteria, no mostraron diferencias significativas en las variables de crecimiento, lo que sugiere que su respuesta ante los metales está relacionada tanto con la dosis como con el tiempo de exposición, así como con la tolerancia intrínseca de estas especies. No obstante esto, la presencia de la rizobacteria mantuvo el crecimiento de las plántulas de C. elegans ante los metales pesados, lo que podría estar asociado con un efecto protector a las plántulas con la disminución de la toxicidad de ambos metales. Es importante enfatizar la importancia de la investigación sobre la colonización de las rizobacterias, no solamente en la espermosfera, sino también en las raíces de las plántulas inoculadas con el incremento de la superficie radical para la absorción de metales, así como con el papel protector de las rizobacterias contra la toxicidad de metales en el suelo, lo que permitirá establecer un mejor crecimiento y desarrollo de especies vegetales para la estabilización, la revegetación y la remediación de suelos contaminados con metales pesados.
Bottom-Water Conditions in a Marine Basin after the Cretaceous–Paleogene Impact Event: Timing the Recovery of Oxygen Levels and Productivity

Abstract: An ultra-high-resolution analysis of major and trace element contents from the Cretaceous–Paleogene boundary interval in the Caravaca section, southeast Spain, reveals a quick recovery of depositional conditions after the impact event. Enrichment/depletion profiles of redox sensitive elements indicate significant geochemical anomalies just within the boundary ejecta layer, supporting an instantaneous recovery –some 102 years– of pre-impact conditions in terms of oxygenation. Geochemical redox proxies point to oxygen levels comparable to those at the end of the Cretaceous shortly after impact, which is further evidenced by the contemporary macrobenthic colonization of opportunistic tracemakers. Recovery of the oxygen conditions was therefore several orders shorter than traditional proposals (104–105 years), suggesting a probable rapid recovery of deep-sea ecosystems at bottom and in intermediate waters.

Determination of Glucose by Flow Injection Analysis with Amperometric Detection at Fe(III)-(tris(3,5-dimethyl-1-pyrazolyl)borate)2 Modified Electrodes

Abstract: A modified screen printed electrode with [Fe(tris(3,5-dimethyl- 1-pyrazolyl)borate)2]+[FeCl4]-, installed as part of a flow injection system, was used as an amperometric detector to determine hydrogen peroxide and glucose after on-line reaction with glucose oxidase. The influence of experimental variables on sensitivity, such as the flow rate, injection volume and reaction coil length, was evaluated using a two-level factorial experimental design. Under optimal conditions, detection limits of 15 M and 0.5 mM for H2O2 and glucose, respectively, were obtained. A sampling rate of 60 determinations h-1 was achieved; the relative standard deviation of analytical measurements was <5.0%. The method was validated by comparing the obtained results with those provided by the enzymatic spectrophotometric method; no significant differences were observed (p < 0.05).
The Role of Synthetic Biology in the Design of Microbial Cell Factories for Biofuel Production

Abstract: Insecurity in the supply of fossil fuels, volatile fuel prices, and major concerns regarding climate change have sparked renewed interest in the production of fuels from renewable resources. Because of this, the use of biodiesel has grown dramatically during the last few years and is expected to increase even further in the future. Biodiesel production through the use of microbial systems has marked a turning point in the field of biofuels since it is emerging as an attractive alternative to conventional technology. Recent progress in synthetic biology has accelerated the ability to analyze, construct, and/or redesign microbial metabolic pathways with unprecedented precision, in order to permit biofuel production that is amenable to industrial applications. The review presented here focuses specifically on the role of synthetic biology in the design of microbial cell factories for efficient production of biodiesel.
Estrés y depresión en madres de prematuros: un programa de intervención

Abstract: advances in premature newborn care have been highly successful. nevertheless, various side effects have also been noted. experience shows that premature birth and neonatal intensive care unit (nicu) admission usually produce undesired effects on parents, mainly maternal stress and depression. our aim was to assess a psychological intervention program to provide support to the parents of premature infants during their hospitalization. patients, material and methods. a total of 60 premature infants under 1,500 g who survived and were discharged from the nicu, were enrolled between january 5th, 1997 and november 20th, 1999. single mothers, multiple gestations, congenital anomalies and parents refusal to give their consent, were not included. parents were divided in two groups: intervention (n= 31) and control (n= 29). a delayed time method was used for randomization in order to avoid simultaneity between groups. the control group received the usual care of the division of neonatology. the intervention group received an individualized care based on an interdisciplinary and multifactorial program. the evaluation was performed according to specific scales. results. there were no differences between the groups in medical, demographic, educational and social variables. the intervention group showed significant lower levels of maternal stress and depression (p< 0.001). in the control group, 62% of the mothers reported that the experience was "highly stressful", significantly higher than that of the intervention group (6.4%; p< 0.0001). conclusion. a psychosocial model of intervention applied in mothers of premature infants may significantly reduce maternal stress and depression. this intervention may improve the mother-infant bonding and the future development of the child.

Abstract: introduction. preterm infants and those carrying bronchopulmonary dysplasia have a higher risk of hospitalization because of respiratory synctitial virus infection. palivizumab is an expensive drug that has been approved in argentina. the lack of epidemiological data about respiratory synctitial virus infection hospitalizations in high-risk populations precludes extrapolation of the american academy of pediatrics guidelines to the argentine population. few studies have explored social risk in the biologically vulnerable groups for this severe infection. objective. to explore the association between biologic and socio-economic factors, and severe forms of respiratory synctitial virus infection in preterm babies with or without bronchopulmonary dysplasia. population, material and methods. the study design is a case-control study. inclusion criteria: children who attended to the neonatal high-risk clinic followup program and met the criteria of the american academy of pediatrics guidelines during a fiveyear period (may to september 1998-2002). biological and social risk variables were investigated. results. of the 121 patients who fulfilled the inclusion criteria; 30 patients (25%) required hospitalization (cases) and 91 did not require hospitalization (controls). for the analyzed biological variables of risk, the cases had birth weights and gestational ages greater than controls (329 g ± 450 versus 1,145 g ± 393). there were not significant differences in other variables of biological risk. only siblings or other children in the household younger than ten years of age and mothers with incomplete primary school were associated with increased risk of hospitalization (or 5.4, ci 95% 1.7-16; or 5.8 ci 95% 2.2-15.4). conclusions. we conclude that the biological risk factors currently used in developed countries are inadequate to define the risk for respiratory synctitial virus infection hospitalization in low socioeconomic groups in developing countries, and that social fa

Abstract: introduction: secondary hemophagocytic syndrome (shs) is an uncommon clinical entity with high mortality, characterized by increased macrophagic activity associated to infections, immunodeficiency and neoplastic diseases. the clinical manifestations are persistent fever (> 7 days), hepatosplenomegaly and cytopenia affecting from a single hematological cell line up to pancytopenia. diagnosis is based on examination of the bone marrow, lymph node or liver showing benign histiocytes with active hemophagocytosis. methods: retrospective analysis of clinical data related to 8 pediatric patients with shs. results: median age 6 years with the following underlying diseases: hematological cancer (3), autoimmune disease (2) and down syndrome (1). infection was associated with shs in all patients and the etiology was documented in 4 cases. intravenous immunoglobulin plus methylprednisolone besides antibiotics were given to 6 patients. only one patient died. conclusion: early and accurate diagnosis with inmunomodulation therapy was useful to improve outcome and reduce mortality rate in these cases
