La energía nuclear y la industria en Francia
Roux, A.
Informes de la Construccion , 1980,
Abstract: In this article an analysis is made of the favorable effects for industry involved in the development of nuclear energy and the interaction between them. Reference is made to the problem of energy supply in France and the need for an effort in energy savings, to the development of new sources and priority in the establishment of an important program of nuclear power plants. Also, an analysis is made of the role of Industry, the Atomic Energy and Electricity Commission of France in the supply and processing of the nuclear materials. Finally, a general review of the manpower and technical means presently available is made, as well as an examination of the investments foreseen for local development of this energy.
Person-centred counselling to ameliorate symptoms of psychological distress among South African patients living with hypertension and diabetes: Results of an intervention study
A Kagee, M Le Roux
South African Family Practice , 2009,
Abstract: Background: Previous research, internationally and in South Africa, suggests that symptoms of depression and anxiety are prevalent among patients living with a chronic illness. Very few behavioural interventions have shown to be effective in ameliorating such symptoms among patients attending public health clinics in South Africa. In this study, a five-session counselling programme was tested to ameliorate symptoms of depression and anxiety in clinic patients living with diabetes and hypertension in the Western Cape, South Africa. Method: A convenience sample of patients (n = 37) was recruited from two public clinics. The sample was non-randomly assigned to a treatment group (n = 20) and a control group (n = 17), and assessed before and after the intervention was presented. A battery of instruments consisting of the Hopkins Symptom Checklist, the Beck Depression Inventory, and the Beck Anxiety Inventory was administered before and after the intervention. Results: The results indicate that person-centred counselling was effective in ameliorating general psychological distress and symptoms of depression, but not symptoms of anxiety, as measured by the above instruments. The results suggest that psychological counselling may be helpful to medical patients. Conclusions: While counselling interventions may be well placed in public health settings from the perspective of treatment efficacy, it is necessary to temper this recommendation with an understanding of the barriers to implementing such services and the resulting impact on therapeutic effectiveness.
Teaching for social justice education: the intersection between identity, critical agency, and social justice education
D Francis, A le Roux
South African Journal of Education , 2011,
Abstract: In line with national policy requirements, educators are increasingly addressing forms of social justice education by focusing on classroom pedagogies and educational practices to combat different forms of oppression such as racism and sexism. As all educators have a role to play in dismantling oppression and generating a vision for a more socially just future, teacher education has the responsibility to capacitate pre-service teachers to work in areas of social justice education. It is, however, difficult to conceptualise programmes for social justice education without considering the interconnection between various social identities and how such identities can feed into critical agency and education for social justice. Working with the assumption that white women teachers must be part of the solution to bring about social change in South African education, we used in-depth interviewing to explore pre-service teachers’ emerging identities as teachers, and how these identities are connected to notions of critical agency and a stance towards social justice.
The challenge of quality and relevance in South African education: a philosophical perspective
D. Coetzee, A. Le Roux
South African Journal of Education , 2001,
Abstract: Within a changing South African socio-political context, quality education and schooling mean radically different things to different people. The call for contextualising education within an African life-world, and the fear of declining quality and standards in education, necessitate a closer look at the role and meaning of quality and relevance in education. This article consequently attempts a philosophical perspective on quality education and the role of educational standards and relevance. (South African Journal of Education: 2001 21(4): 208-212)
