Abstract: El presente artículo recoge los resultados de una investigación realizada para determinar las necesidades de cambio en el plan de estudios de formación de profesores y bachilleres en la ense anza de las ciencias naturales que se gradúan en la Universidad de Costa Rica. Al final se presenta una propuesta curricular para lograr la actualización del mismo.

Abstract: Cuando una unidad académica formadora de profesores de ciencias, desea actualizar un plan de estudios, debe considerar aspectos como: el avance en el campo de la ciencia y la tecnología, las nuevas tendencias en la educación y la actitud ante la ense anza de las ciencias de los estudiantes que serán formados por estos profesores. Este estudio se centró en la actitud de los estudiantes de 10o a o hacia la metodología de la ense anza de las ciencias desde su visión en el proceso de aula, para lo cual se contó con la colaboración de estudiantes de 10o a o del Colegio Científico Costarricense de San Pedro, de estudiantes de 10o a o del Colegio María Auxiliadora de San José y del Liceo Vargas Calvo de San Pedro. Los resultados demuestran que la actitud de los estudiantes ante la ense anza de las ciencias, está influenciada por el interés que se les haya despertado en a os anteriores sobre esta área del aprendizaje. Además, esperan que la ense anza de esta materia sea más activa, que presente experiencias de laboratorio y demostraciones en clase y que ofrezca una mayor relación con los acontecimientos de la vida diaria. When science professors want to modernize the study's plan, they must consider aspects such as scientific and technological advancements, new educational tendency in teaching, and the student's attitudes towards science and teaching. This study was done on tenth grades students and their attitudes towards their science teachers' methodology in class. This research was made with students of the Científico Costarricense High School , with the Vargas Calvo High School and with the María Auxiliadora High School situated in San Pedro and San José downtown specifically. The research showed that students' attitudes are influenced by their interest on this area. They would like that science would be more active, more practical, and that the activities focussed on lab experiments and class expositions

Sex and Age-Related Differences in Neuroticism and Allostatic Load Index in Urban Patients with General Anxiety Disorder Treated with Alprazolam  [PDF]

Abstract: Introduction: Allostatic load (AL) index proposes indicators for the functioning of the main potentially stress-affected systems. Sex differences in stress response and stress-related diseases susceptibility have been described for the general population. In this observational study we describe the effects of sex and age on AL variables, in a cohort of patients with general anxiety disorders and neuroticism treated with alprazolam during 12 weeks, before and after treatment. Methods: Patients with general (DSM IV) anxiety disorders with >6 in Hamilton scale, AL (>1 Crimmins and Seeman AL modified criteria) and neuroticism >18 (NEO-FFI inventory), were included. All patients completed psychiatric assessment, AL index determination before (1 week) and after 12 weeks of treatment with alprazolam (0.25 - 1 mg/t.i.d). Allostatic load parameters comprised cardiovascular, metabolic and inflammatory variables. Univariate analysis (two-way ANOVA), Student’s t-test (related variables) and Pearson correlations were determined. Results: Fifty-four patients, 35 females (48.6 ± 11.7 years) and 19 males (44.2 ± 12.8 years) with general anxiety disorder were included; 28 patients with <50 years (60.7% females), and 26 with ≥50 years (69.2% females). Younger patients (<50 years) (two-way ANOVA, p = 0.02) were significantly associated with lower AL index after treatment. However, women showed higher anxiety levels in both, before (two-way ANOVA, p = 0.059) and after treatment (two-way ANOVA, p = 0.005), with a significantly better profile than men in many individual AL variables, particularly cardiovascular (systolic blood pressure), obesity (body mass index), and lipids (higher HDL levels). After treatment a higher reduction of fibrinogen levels was found in men (two-way ANOVA, p = 0.02). Conclusions: In this preliminary analysis we described sex and age differences in psychiatry aspects and AL indexes in patients with general anxiety disorders in the short-term treatment with alprazolam. These considerations remark the need of pondering sex and age differences during the use of drugs for protracted periods.

Abstract: Resumen:Este trabajo consiste en una rese a de una experiencia de aula donde se aprovecha el conocimiento en el campo de las Tecnologías de la Información y la Comunicación (TICs) para que los estudiantes del Colegio Científico Costarricense, con sede en San Pedro, San José de Costa Rica,logren investigar sobre temáticas de física moderna y comprender los principios básicos del tema de su interés. Las investigaciones en temáticas que presenta el programa de Física al concluir el undécimo a o, involucraron a los estudiantes para que formaran parejas para realizar estos estudios sobre diversos temas. Indagaron en la WEB, capturaron imágenes que les permitieran reflejar los conceptos estudiados. Crearon afiches con los textos y las figuras que lograron relacionar, asimismo las presentaron a sus compa eros de colegio, respondiendo las preguntas que estos temas generaban en los espectadores.Abstract:This job to a review of a classroom where leverages knowledge in the field of ICTs that Scientific of Costa Rica High Scholl with headquarters in San Pedro, San José, Costa Rica, students achieve research on modern physics topics and understand the basics of the topic of your interest experience. Small research issues featuring the physics program at the end of 11th year involved students to form pairs of researchers on various topics. They searched the WEB on these issues, captured images allowing them to reflect the studied concepts. Created posters with texts and figures achieved relate and presented them to school, fellow answering the questions that these topics generated in others students.

Al final se presenta una propuesta curricular para lograr la actualización. Abstract. This article is the report of the investigation about of the Academic program of Sciences’ teacher, with speciality in physics, chemistry and biology in the University of Costa Rica. That program was presented in 1990 and in this moment it recoated changes. Finally it presents the new project for the academy program for Natural Science’s teacher in physics, chemistry and biology.

Abstract: Este artículo presenta los lineamientos para generar una propuesta de evaluación curricular de un plan de estudios en el ámbito de la educación universitaria. Identifica la importancia que tiene este proceso para la institución con el fin de analizar las debilidades y fortalezas, con miras a la toma de decisiones para su actualización. En la propuesta se responde el por qué y para qué se debe evaluar; los beneficios que los usuarios recibirán de esa actualización; la concreción de elementos del plan de estudios por evaluar; la definición de las variables que se aplicarán en la evaluación de los elementos externos e internos. Se proponen cuáles son los sectores sociales que deben involucrarse en dicha evaluación; se analiza el momento adecuado para realizar la evaluación y cada cuanto debe aplicarse, se establece un plan estratégico para aplicar la evaluación y se presentan las sugerencias de los usos que se le pueda dar a la información recopilada con la evaluación. Evaluar un plan de estudios permite descubrir las necesidades de cambio de los planes de estudio; el establecimiento de los lineamientos para su actualización y el tiempo en que se debe cumplir con la misma para que el plan no pierda vigencia

Abstract: alcohol intoxication is the principal drug addiction in many countries of the world. it affects all age groups, both sexes and almost all social groups. mortality associated with acute alcohol poisoning on its own is exceptional, but it can be an important factor if it coexists with recreational drugs. it is directly responsible for more than half of traffic accidents. diagnosis is easy by means of anamnesis and clinical examination, and can be confirmed by determining the level of ethanol in the bloodstream. supportive care is the best therapy in order to protect the patient from secondary complications. methanol, or alcohol fuel, is used as a solvent, and can also be found as an adulterant of alcoholic drinks. poisoning by oral means is the most frequent. oxidized in the liver through dehydrogenase enzyme alcohol, toxicity is due to its metabolites, formaldehyde and formic acid. the clinical picture basically consists of cephalea, nausea, vomiting, hypotension and depression of the central nervous system. the optic nerve is especially sensitive, with total and irreversible blindness as a possible result. ethylenglicol is used as a solvent and as an antifreeze; toxicity is due to an accumulation of its metabolites. the clinical picture includes symptoms that are held in common with methylalcohol intoxication. kidney failure due to tubular necrosis and the deposit of oxalate crystals can occur.
Evaluation of an enzyme-linked immunoelectrotransfer blot test for the confirmatory serodiagnosis of human toxocariasis

Abstract: to improve the serodiagnosis of human toxocariasis, a sensitive and specific enzyme-linked immunoelectrotransfer blot (eitb-igg) test was developed and evaluated using toxocara canislarvae excretory-secretory antigens for detecting anti-toxocara igg antibodies. the eitb-igg profile of toxocariasis was characterized by comparing 27 sera from patients with toxocariasis, 110 sera from healthy subjects and 186 sera from patients with other helminth diseases (ascariasis, ancylostomiasis, trichuriasis, enterobiasis, strongyloidiasis, hymenolepiasis, diphyllobothriasis, taeniasis, cysticercosis, hydatidosis and fascioliasis). antigenic bands of 24, 28, 30, 35, 56, 117, 136 and 152 kda were predominantly recognized in sera from all patients with toxocariasis. however, only bands of 24-35 kda were highly specific for toxocara infection (98.3%), whereas other antigenic bands observed displayed cross-reactivity. additionally, when the results of the eitb-igg test were compared to those of the elisa-igg test, a 100% concordance was observed for positive results in human toxocariasis cases. the concordance for negative results between the two tests for healthy subjects and patients with other helminth diseases were 96.3% and 53.7%, respectively, showing that the eitb-igg test has a higher specificity than elisa. in conclusion, the eitb-igg test is a very useful tool to confirm the serological diagnosis of human toxocariasis.
