The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of porcine recombinant somatotropin (rpST) administered to piglets during their first week of life, on metabolic and somatometric variables. A total of 220 piglets born from 40 hybrid Landrace x Large White sows were used. Piglets were randomly assigned to either Group 1 (G1, Control, n = 106) or Group 2 (G2, rpST treatment, n = 114). The rpST dose was 1mg/kg every 24h during 7 consecutive days. Serum pH at birth showed significant differences between groups (7.42 ± 0.47 and 7.31 ± 0.59), although this difference dissapeared on day 8. There was a significant increase (P < 0,001) in plasma glucose levels for the treated group on day 8 (68.78 ± 10.44 and 103.71 ± 18.44). Average daily weight gain was also higher for the somatotropin treated group compared to the control (137.25 ± 31.31 and 209.21 ± 45.97). Comparisons for interaction between treatment and sex sh

Abstract: This paper reports the synthesis and characterization of asymmetric ultrafiltration membrane made from recycled polystyrene foam (PS) with different additives and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). The polystyrene is currently employed as packing, in fabrication of glasses and dishes. The recycled polystyrene is inexpensive and easy to acquire and, at less in Mexico, not a conscience exists of recycled. The membranes where prepared by phase inversion process from casting solution containing polystyrene as polymer, l-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) as solvent, and polyethylene glycol (PEG) of different molecular weights and dioctyl phthalate (DOP) as additives. The membranes where characterized in terms of pure water permeation (PWP), molecular weight cut off (MWCO), flux and membrane morphology. The results revealed that the addition of PEG with high molecular weights, produce membrane with higher pure water permeation. The presence of additives affects the surface roughness and membrane morphology.

Theoretical Economics Letters (TEL) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/tel.2016.64075
Abstract: This paper investigates inference methods to introduce prior information in econometric modelling through stochastic restrictions. The goal is to show that stochastic restrictions method estimator can be asymptotically more efficient than the estimator ignoring prior information and can achieve efficiency if prior information grows faster than the sample information in the asymptotics. The set up includes the nonlinear least squares and indirect inference estimators. The paper proposes a new indirect inference estimator that incorporates stochastic equality constraints on the parameters of interest. Finally, the proposed approach is applied to a macroeconomics model where high efficiency gains are shown.

Abstract: the cactus weevil, metamasius spinolae (gyllenhal), is one of the most important pests in prickly pear (opuntia ficus-indica (l.) miller) in mexico and especially in tlalnepantla, morelos, the second most important region in the production of this crop, with about 2 500 ha. both adults and larvae cause damage to this crop; larvae make galleries in mature pads and adults damage young pads of the cactus. although there are no authorized pesticides for its control in mexico, this fact does not stop farmers from using synthetic insecticides without knowing their effectiveness. for this reason, this study evaluated the effectiveness of eight pesticides in two chemical groups, organophosphates and pyrethroids, on adults of this insect. the laboratory and field tests conducted in 2007 showed that malathion caused a mortality similar to other more toxic products in the same group (methyl parathion and methidathion). on the other hand, only a pyrethroid insecticide (permethrin) provided a mortality rate close to 86%, in comparison to the remaining three (cypermethrin, deltamethrin and fenvalerate) which caused a mortality of under 20% mortality. there was a differential response of the sex of the insect to insecticides, in which females were less susceptible than males to some products, such as diazinon, permethrin and cypermethrin. this is the first formal report of the evaluation of synthetic insecticides in this insect and we discuss some issues related to management.

Abstract: The use of dry gases during mechanical ventilation has been associated with the risk of serious airway complications. The goal of the present study was to quantify the plasma levels of TNF-alpha and IL-6 and to determine the radiological, hemodynamic, gasometric, and microscopic changes in lung mechanics in dogs subjected to short-term mechanical ventilation with and without humidification of the inhaled gas. The experiment was conducted for 24 hours in 10 dogs divided into two groups: Group I (n = 5), mechanical ventilation with dry oxygen dispensation, and Group II (n = 5), mechanical ventilation with oxygen dispensation using a moisture chamber. Variance analysis was used. No changes in physiological, hemodynamic, or gasometric, and radiographic constants were observed. Plasma TNF-alpha levels increased in group I, reaching a maximum 24 hours after mechanical ventilation was initiated (ANOVA p = 0.77). This increase was correlated to changes in mechanical ventilation. Plasma IL-6 levels decreased at 12 hours and increased again towards the end of the study (ANOVA p>0.05). Both groups exhibited a decrease in lung compliance and functional residual capacity values, but this was more pronounced in group I. Pplat increased in group I (ANOVA p = 0.02). Inhalation of dry gas caused histological lesions in the entire respiratory tract, including pulmonary parenchyma, to a greater extent than humidified gas. Humidification of inspired gases can attenuate damage associated with mechanical ventilation.
