Abstract: the use of technologies as support tools for the teaching of mathematics has become an important area of research on teaching. educational institutions may use these tools to prepare students for social life and the world of work. each day, more and more computational resources are made available to teachers. methodologies including such resource in the syllabus were examined and a research project was developed with the purpose to analyze the possibilities of using maple software in the theoretical and practical development of differential and integral calculus for students of mathematics and engineering. methodologically speaking, the project is based on the principles of didactics engineering, which is characterized as an experimental frame of reference based on classroom didactic practices, concerning conception, practice, observation, and analysis of teaching sequences. the study pointed out that the use of mathematical software in class motivates students, allows autonomy, rises the ability to interpret and analyze and promotes solid knowledge building.
Validity of microporous polysaccharide hemispheres as a hemostatic agent in hepatic injuries: an experimental study in rats

Abstract: introduction: in the treatment of hepatic injuries, there is not always adequate and secure hemostasis. a hepatic biopsy is indispensable in the evolution of focal or diffuse liver cell disease, being necessary for candidates for liver transplant and post-transplant treatment. many patients suffer blood clotting that increases the risk of bleeding. for this reason, it is necessary to seek for substances capable of bringing about hemostasis quickly and effectively. purpose: the aim of this study was to recognize the validity of the use of microporous polysaccharide hemispheres (mph) as a hemostatic agent for hepatic injuries. methods: thirty wistar rats were used, split into three groups. under anaesthetic, a laparoptomy was done and resulted in a standard liver injury that was treated in group a with mph, in group b with n-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate and in group c with fibrin adhesive. immediate hemostasis, delayed bleeding and histological evolution were timed. results: the mph took on average six minutes to promote hemostasis and also resulted in re-bleeding, which required reapplication; the n-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate took twenty seconds and the fibrin adhesive took one minute. the cyanoacrylate resulted in more intense adherence. the three adhesives mainly showed a chronic inflammatory reaction. the injuries treated with cyanoacrylate showed a larger area of injury (p=0,0164). the density of the collagen was similar in all groups. conclusion: the mph, despite achieving hemostasis, proved to be no more favorable than n-butyl-cyanoacrylate and the fibrin adhesive, the latter resulting in the lowest tissue reaction.

Abstract: this paper describes a case of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia complicated by warfarin-induced skin necrosis in a 74-year old female patient hospitalized with diagnoses of a hip fracture, deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary thromboembolism. warfarin-induced skin necrosis is a rare complication of anticoagulant therapy, with high morbidity and mortality that may be associated with heparin-induced thrombocytopenia.
Resveratrol provoca efeitos antiaterogênicos em um modelo animal de aterosclerose

Abstract: background: resveratrol protects the cardiovascular system by a number of mechanisms, including antioxidant and anti-platelet activities. objective: to assess the potential anti-inflammatory and antiatherogenic effects of resveratrol using rabbits fed a hypercholesterolemic diet (1% cholesterol). methods: twenty white male rabbits were selected and divided into two groups: control group (cg), 10 rabbits; and resveratrol group (rg), 10 rabbits. the animals were fed a hypercholesterolemic diet for 56 days. for the rg diet, resveratrol (2mg/kg weight/day) was added from days 33 - 56. results: there was no significant difference in the total serum cholesterol, hdl-cholesterol, ldl-cholesterol, and triglycerides between the groups. of the cg, 70% had advanced aortic atherosclerotic lesions (types iii, iv, v, or vi). all animals from the rg had mild aortic atherosclerotic lesions (types i or ii, or no lesions). the intima area and the intima/media layer area ratio was significantly lower in the rg as compared to the cg (p<0.001). positive areas for vcam-1 molecules were lower in the rg (p=0.007). the mcp-1 and il-6 concentrations were lower in the rg than the cg (p=0.039 and p=0.015, respectively). conclusion: resveratrol had significant anti-atherogenic and anti-inflammatory effects in an animal model with rabbits fed a hypercholesterolemic diet (1% cholesterol).
