Abstract: 从马桑(Coriarianepalensis)根瘤中分离获得4株具典型弗兰克氏菌(Frankia)形态特征的内生菌纯培养物.结瘤试验证实它们均能侵染原寄主形成根瘤.特异性寡核苷酸探针杂交结果也表明这些内生菌纯培养物属于Frankia属的成员.进一步用nifHDK探针杂交还显示这些菌株的基因组中均具有相应的同源片段,并且表现出nif基因限制性片段长度多型性差异.现已克隆出其中的nifH基因片段,为进一步研究马桑类群Frankia的系统发育奠定基础.
Experimental model of heterotopic ossification in Wistar rats

Abstract: heterotopic ossification (ho) is a metaplastic biological process in which there is newly formed bone in soft tissues adjacent to large joints, resulting in joint mobility deficit. in order to determine which treatment techniques are more appropriate for such condition, experimental models of induced heterotopic bone formation have been proposed using heterologous demineralized bone matrix implants and bone morphogenetic protein and other tissues. the objective of the present experimental study was to identify a reliable protocol to induce ho in wistar rats, based on autologous bone marrow (bm) implantation, comparing 3 different bm volumes and based on literature evidence of this ho induction model in larger laboratory animals. twelve male wistar albino rats weighing 350/390 g were used. the animals were anesthetized for blood sampling before ho induction in order to quantify serum alkaline phosphatase (alp). ho was induced by bm implantation in both quadriceps muscles of these animals, experimental group (eg). thirty-five days after the induction, another blood sample was collected for alp determination. the results showed a weight gain in the eg and no significant difference in alp levels when comparing the periods before and after induction. qualitative histological analysis confirmed the occurrence of heterotopic ossification in all 12 eg rats. in conclusion, the ho induction model was effective when 0.35 ml autologous bm was applied to the quadriceps of wistar rats.

Abstract: this work was carried out to study the germination of panicum maximum jacq. seeds, coloni?o, tobiat?, centenário, centauro and tanzania varieties, on substrata moistened with three different volumes of 0.2% potassium nitrate solution: 12, 16 and 20ml. after sowing, the gerbox covers were tied with tape and no water was added. germination counts were done each 7 days. the germination test results pointed out that there were differences among them, depending on the amount of solution applied. the germination percentage with 12 ml of solution applied to the substrata was greater than for the others.

Abstract: this work was carried out to evaluate the effect of sulfuric acid pre-treatment on the germination percentage of panicum maximum jacq. seeds, in laboratory conditions. recently harvested seeds, of five varieties, pre-treated or not with sulfuric acid, were tested periodically from august 1991 to april 1993. the statistical analysis of the collected data showed that the pre-treatment did not contribute to improve the germination of the seeds, since the beginning until the end of the storage period.

Abstract: davilla elliptica st.-hil. is popularly used in the treatment of hemorrhoid, diarrhea and wounds. the aim of this work was to characterize pharmacognosticaly two leaves samples of d. elliptica. paradermal and transversal sections had been submitted the usual techniques of optical microscopy. the leaves of d. elliptica are hypostomatics, and the stomata predominantly paracytic. in both epidermis were observed unicellular non-glandular trichomes. the mesophyll is isolateral and shows idioblasts with crystals in raphide. the vascular system in the midrib is constituted by three vascular bundles, forming a circular structure. the petiole shows a circular structure probably formed by union of many vascular bundles localized in the central region. the powdered plant material was submitted to tests of phytochemical prospection, of purity and quantitative. there had been evidenced the presence of tannins, coumarins, resins, flavonoids, saponins and steroids. the content of total ashes was of 10,32% and 12,26%, insoluble in acid of 7,46% and 9,68%; the humidity of 9,92% and 9,50%. the flavonoids contents was of 1,20% and 1,48%; the tannins contents was of 9,89% and 13,96%. because of the reduced number of samples, it was not possible to affirm through this study that the pharmacognostic profile de d. elliptica is influenced by abiotics factors.

Abstract: understanding basic information on weed biology related to plant emergence fluxes, seed dormancy causes and maximum depth for emergence may significantly contribute to creating rational strategies for weed management in agriculture. thus, this work was developed to evaluate seed germination and seedling emergence of small aerial seeds of bengal dayflower (commelina benghalensis).seeds were submitted to dormancy overcoming in sulfuric acid (periods of 1, 2, 3, 5 and 5 minutes) under different conditions of temperature (mean temperatures of 16.1; 18.6; 20.6; 23.1; 25.0; 26.9; 29.2; 31.1 and 33.6 oc), light (with or without), and seeding depth in the substrate (0, 5, 10, 20, 40 and 80 mm). the optimal temperature for bengal dayflower germination was 25 oc. light effects were not observed on seed germination. positive consequences of seed treatment with sulfuric acid were not identified, considering different periods of exposure; indicating that bengal dayflower seeds do not have tegument water impermeability. seedling emergence is negative and linearly influenced by seeding depth in the substrate. seedling emergence was not observed when seeds were 80 mm depth placed. sand substrate favored seedling emergence.
A Study of Processing Parameters on the Carburization of C2R Steels  [PDF]

Abstract: This study reports an investigation of the effect of carburizing variables – temperature, time and percentage of energizer –on the case properties of C2R steel obtained from HMT Ltd. India. A carburizer consisting of hardwood charcoal and coke respectively in the ratio of 2:1 was used for the research with sodium carbonate as the energizer. The carburizing box was filled with 20 mm thick carburizer compound prior to fixing the steel samples in place. The specimens were carburized using different percentages of energizers (10, 20 and 30%) at different temperatures (820, 860, 900 and 940℃) for different times (from one to five hours). All the specimens were quenched from carburizing temperature, ground to polished surfaces and then etched for ten minutes in 25% Nital. The case depth was measured using the calibrated ocular of an inverted metallurgical microscope fixed at 100 x magnification. The hardness values of the C2R steel cases were measured with a micro hardness tester that uses diamond pyramid indenter. The results of the study showed that the average hardness of the C2R steel cases increased with temperature for any given carburizing time and temperature. For a given percentage energizer and temperature, the case depths and hardness increased with time. Increase in the percentage energizer however decreased the activation energy required for diffusion to occur exponentially.

Abstract: The first results allowing new understanding of physical processes occurring under fatigue deformation in low-carbon steels are reported. After every stage of fatigue deformation, samples were investigated using Auger electron spectroscopy, optical and scanning electron microscopy, atomic-force microscopy, measurements of internal friction, x-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), x-ray fluorescent analysis, measurements of nanohardness, and plotted fatigue kinetic curves. We found formation of “dark spots”, slip bands, and new phases as FeCO3 (iron carbonate), as well as iron oxalate C2FeO4. They seemed to be conditioned either by the process of cyclic friction occurring in slip planes of intensively deformed grains, which possibly resulted in separation of individual submicron structured metal particles, or by action of high temperatures arising in submicrovolume local regions, in which chemical reactions are initiated.

Abstract: A model wind-generator design (UWM-1) structured for use in the Umudike community has been done. Design was based mainly on data from wind studies within the community. With two blade-propellers operating from a hub height of 67m, power in excess of 150MWh per annum is derivable which can be utilized in various forms to support domestic and industrial activities of the community.
