A Study on a Group of Indian English as a Second Language Learners’ Perceptions of Autonomous Learning
zgür Yldrm
Turkish Online Journal of Qualitative Inquiry , 2012,
Abstract: Learner autonomy has been one of the most popular terms in the language learning field lately. Researchers have been conducting studies to see different aspects of learner autonomy and to bring different suggestions to teachers to promote autonomous learning in their classrooms. Students of a particular cultural background would not show the same level of readiness for learner autonomy as the students of another culture. Cultural and educational settings of the instruction affect how the teachers and students perceive the concept of learner autonomy, and these differences in perception obviously affect how the ways to promote learner autonomy work. As the perception and realization of learner autonomy changes depending on the cultural background, it is important to see the autonomy-related perspectives of different learners and teachers around the world. Thus, aiming to contribute the relevant literature from this standpoint, the main aim of this study was to explore four Indian English as a second language (ESL) learners’ perceptions related to teacher and learner responsibilities in the language learning process and to get an idea of how ESL students in the Indian educational context perceive the concepts related to learner independence. Three interview sessions were conducted with the participants in order to reach the aim of the study. The data were analyzed according to three main categories: (a) aspects of language learning for which the participants saw the teacher as the most responsible figure in the classroom; (b) aspects of learning for which the participants considered students to be more responsible; (c) aspects that both the teacher and the students share equal responsibility. It was hoped that the results of the study would provide guidance to teachers and researchers, especially the ones working with multicultural student groups, to understand the effects of culture on the interpretation of concepts related to learner autonomy.
Turkish EFL Learners’ Readiness for Learner Autonomy

Journal of Language and Linguistic Studies , 2008,
Abstract: The notion of ‘learner autonomy’ has become more and more crucial in the field oflanguage learning for the last three decades due to the development of learner centeredapproaches in education. Current literature on learner autonomy suggests that the perceptionand practice of autonomous learning change according to specific cultural and educationalcontexts. Therefore, in any given country, it is important to identify students’ readiness forlearner autonomy before designing or adapting activities to promote autonomous learning. This study is an attempt in that direction. Aiming at identifying university level Turkish EFLlearners’ readiness for learner autonomy, the study investigated 103 learners’ perceptions ofteacher and learner responsibilities, their opinions about their own abilities to actautonomously, and the frequency of actual autonomous language learning activities theyemploy. Results indicated that learners seem to be ready to take more responsibility in manyareas of the language learning process.

Journal of Academic Emergency Medicine , 2011,
Abstract: A 35-year-old man presented with new onset headache and dizziness in our emergency service. An hyperdense lesion was determined near the third ventricle rostrum in the vicinity to the right of the Foramen of Monroe. The patient was immediately evaluated with MRI. MRI findings were consistent with a colloid cyst. In addition, there was acute ischemia throughout the right anterior cerebral watershed area which was represented by edema and gyral thickening. The, patient was taken to the intensive care unit for follow up and for planning advanced evaluation. With symptomatic treatment, rapid improvement of the complaints was seen. Due to these follow up findings, invasive procedures such as conventional angiography or operation was not applied. The cyst regressed and showed decreased density on the control CT scans taken the following day. Throughout the follow up periods, no signs of hydrocephalus, intracranial herniation or hemorrhage were determined. The first distended cyst disappeared with complete resolution by spontaneous rupture. In the first year control MRI, encephalomalacia had developed throughout the previous watershed area. A cystic lesion was no longer visible. Also, cranial MR angiography examination demonstrated occlusion of the right ACA. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of a spontaneously ruptured colloid cyst that caused vascular compression which resulted in acute infarction of the ACA territory.

Journal of Clinical and Analytical Medicine , 2012, DOI: 10.4328
Abstract: Aim: Malignant pleural mesothelioma is a tumor of locally invasive character and of fatal course, frequently arising following asbest exposure. In the present study we attempted to retrospectively evaluate the clinical, pathological, and radiological findings of 27 cases diagnosed with MPM. Material and Method: 27 cases diagnosed with MPM in our medical facility have been included into the study, 14 females, and 13 males. Of the cases, 4 have been diagnosed based on transthoracic pleural biopsy, and 23 %u2013 using surgical methods (VYTC, thoracotomy). Result: Radiological evaluation revealed pleural thickening in 23 (85.2%), pleural effusion in 20 (74.1%), volume loss in 15 (55.6%), pleural nodulation in 14 (51.9%), mediastinal shift in 4 (14.8%), pneumothorax in 1 (3.7%), and hydropneumothorax in 1 (3.7%) of the cases, respectively. Histopathological examination failed to reveal any typing in 17 (63%) of the cases. On the other hand, 5 (18.5%) of the remainder cases were of the epitheloid type, 4 (14.8%) were of the sarcomatoid type, and 1 (3.7%) was of the biphasic MPM type. Mean survival rate of the 3 (11.1%) Stage I cases was 1449 days, of the 6 (22.2%) Stage II cases was 480 days, of the 18 (66.7%) Stage III cases was 214 days. We had no Stage IV cases at the time of diagnosis. A statistically significant difference has been established between the Stage and the mean survival rate of the cases. Discussion: In diagnosing MPM, proper histopathological exam followed by proper radiological staging should be carried out. A multimodality approach comprises the present MPM treatment, but total cure cannot be provided.
