Principals’ Perceptions on School Management: A Case Study with Metaphorical Analysis

Abstract: Schools are social organizations in which the members are tied together in interpersonal relations in a complicated way. Only if those relationships are understood , the school organization can function and be managed effectively Metaphors can serve as a powerful strategy to describe those complicated realities related to school management, illuminating aspects of school management phenomena not previously noticed, and adding depth of meaning to understanding it. This paper provides an overview of principals’ perceptions on school management with metaphors in school setting. The purpose of this study is to investigate the mental images (metaphors) that principals formulated to describe the concept of school management and school management activities in which they are involved. This is an holistic multiple case study. The research sought to use qualitative methods to gather the relevant data via semi-structured interviews with principals in Antalya. The outcome of the research addresses important implications for the professional work life of principals in understanding school management and school management activities in school setting.
SCHOOL CLIMATE AND TEACHERS’ PERCEPTIONS ON CLIMATE FACTORS:

Abstract: This study examined the difference in the levels of the variables related to the schoolclimate factors among the teachers teaching social science courses, the teachers teaching natural science courses,and the teachers teaching art, music and physical education. The data collected from a sample of 204 teachersfrom 9 urban schools serving general high school education in the centre of Afyon and Usak cities in Turkey bymeans of the questionnaire developed by the researcher in the academic year of 2001-2002. The questionnaireasked the participants to report the perceived school climate levels of the variables related to the organizationalclimate factors - organizational clarity and standards, team commitment, autonomy, intimacy and support,member conflict, rewards, and risk - on the open-to-closed continuum. The data collected were analyzed by t-testfor Equality of Means and Analysis of Variance and Tukey post hoc tests. As a result of the analyzes, all theteachers reported open climate in relation to the factors of team commitment, organizational clarity andstandards, intimacy and support , autonomy, member conflict, medium climate in relation to the factors of riskand in reward. Additionally, the teachers teaching art, music and physical education reported higher open schoolclimate than others, man than women, single teachers than married ones, the teachers with more degree ofeducation than the ones with a lower degree of education, older teachers than younger ones, and the teacherswith less seniority than the ones with more seniority. Finally, some ideas were suggested about what should bedone in helping teachers to work in a more desirable open school climate

Kepez il esi, birinci e itim b lgesinde ki bu yedi ilk retim okulunun her birinde g rev yapan; bir s n f bir bran toplam 14 ilk retim retmeni ile g rü me yap lm t r. This is a qualitative study in a multiple case study with embedded units design. The population of this study consisted of 228 teachers working in seven schools in the first education region in Kepez District in Antalya. The interviews were done in Kepez District of first education region with seven compulsory schools with 14 teachers seven of whom were class teachers and other seven subject teachers. Interviews were based on willingness. Interviews were made by using semi-structured interview forms. The data obtained were tried to comment with frequency analysis technique which took place in the content analysis in qualitative research. The evaluation of semi-structured interview forms and descriptive analysis were made and suggestions were put forwarded as a result of the obtained data. Abstract:

Cheese is so important to the Turkish cuisine. It is eaten plain as part of the traditional Turkish breakfast, used in salads, and incorporated into cooked foods such as b?rek, pide, menemen and also used for some traditional desserts. There are several types of cheeses with different characteristics and aroma compounds, and they can be used for preparation of various foods as an additive. The formation of cheese aroma basically associated with lipids, proteins and lactose content of milk, besides raw or pasteurized milk, starter or non-starter bacteria, ripening conditions. Cheese flavoring agent is used in a variety of products such as salads, pizza, breads. General properties of some traditional Turkish cheeses, their aroma compounds and importance for Turkish cuisine are discussed.

Abstract: European Union which started with six countries and now includes twenty seven countries is to make the political and economic integration possible. The issue of the harmonization of taxation system applied in the member countries of EU constitutes a must for this integration. Therefore it is very important to prevent unfair competition which can occur among member countries. There is no difference between the PCT practices of member countries, but when we get further details, several differences come into existence. To Turkey, which applied to EU for full membership, tax practices bear importance for unfair competition that member countries can face toward Turkey. Therefore, as a result of the studies done especially on indirect taxes, Turkish Tax System has been harmonized with the European legislation in part.

Abstract: Folklore is one of the fields that attracted considerable attention in the 19th century. Materials are often the tales, stories, beliefs and traditions in the minds of the people. Folklorists obtain these materials using observation, interview, and questionnaire and find the opportunity to examine these materials.With the foundation of Turkish Republic, the fieldworking and archiving of the folklore products in Turkey took momentum both individually and institutionally. The efforts that some scholars such as Ziya G kalp, M. F. K prülü, Z. F. F nd ko lu made to go for the public, to make them aware of the significance of the works of folklore turned out to be useful and their studies such as article and translation made folklore a scientific field in Turkey. The fieldwork studies that first Darülelhan (Istanbul Municipality Conservatory) then the Halk Bilgisi Derne i (the Folklore Society) carried out the most important instances of the collections. The years of 1924-1932 are the period of Turkey’s struggle against several difficulties and folklore was recognized as a scientific field. In this study, the collections that above mentioned the society’s authorities made, the methods they used and the difficulties they encountered are examined. Abstract: ehrengizs are work of arts, whose subject matters are beauty and beautifuls of an individual city, moreover the people who vitalize the city and whom are respected by other people. It is well known thatnearly forty six work of arts in Turkish literature exists. Also, ehrengiz of Edincik which is written by Ravzi who lived in sixteen century in Edincik and around, but hasn’t been acknowledged, hasn’t been known well until these days. ehrengiz of Edincik, which is in the Divan of Ravzi and has one hundred and six stanza “mütekerrir muhammes”, is an important sample of it’s species. Ravzi also had a murabba and a gazel whose topics were Edincik. ehrengizler, bir ehrin güzelliklerini ve güzellerini; o unlukla da ehre hayat veren, o ehirde sevilip say lan güzel insanlar konu edinen eserlerdir. Türk edebiyat nda 46 kadar bu tür eser oldu u bilinmektedir. 16. yüzy lda Edincik ve evresinde ya am , ancak pek tan namam olan Ravz ’nin, Edincik ehrengizi de fazla tan nma imkan bulamam t r. Ravz ’nin Divan i erisinde yer alan 106 bentlik mütekerrir muhammes eklindeki Edincik ehrengizi türünün nemli bir rne i niteli indedir. Ravz ’nin ayr ca konusu Edincik olan bir murabb bir de gazeli vard r.

Trends and Problems in Mining Engineering Education

Abstract: Mining engineering in Turkey has the lowest rank among the other engineering fields. Unemployment, instability in mining industry, lack of investments, difficult working conditions, terrible mining disasters and negative impression of environmentalists are some of the reasons for this fact. On the other hand, mining education has been changing worldwide in the last decade. Many famous mining schools have terminated their programs or established regional collaborations. Therefore, the universities started to rethink and restructure their mining education programs to meet the requirements of the industry and public. In this article, the mining engineering education in the past and present was reviewed including the number of academic staff and graduates. The developments of the engineering curriculum was examined in the world and Europe as well as in Turkey, in particular METU (Middle East Technical University) program was investigated, in detail. In Turkey, two mining engineering departments and three programs have been accreditated by ABET(Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) and MüDEK (Association for Evaluation and Accreditation of Engineering Programs), respectively.
