Autonomous Manoeuvring Systems for Collision Avoidance on Single Carriageway Roads
Felipe Jiménez,José Eugenio Naranjo,óscar Gómez
Sensors , 2012, DOI: 10.3390/s121216498
Abstract: The accurate perception of the surroundings of a vehicle has been the subject of study of numerous automotive researchers for many years. Although several projects in this area have been successfully completed, very few prototypes have actually been industrialized and installed in mass produced cars. This indicates that these research efforts must continue in order to improve the present systems. Moreover, the trend to include communication systems in vehicles extends the potential of these perception systems transmitting their information via wireless to other vehicles that may be affected by the surveyed environment. In this paper we present a forward collision warning system based on a laser scanner that is able to detect several potential danger situations. Decision algorithms try to determine the most convenient manoeuvre when evaluating the obstacles’ positions and speeds, road geometry, etc. Once detected, the presented system can act on the actuators of the ego-vehicle as well as transmit this information to other vehicles circulating in the same area using vehicle-to-vehicle communications. The system has been tested for overtaking manoeuvres under different scenarios and the correct actions have been performed.

Abstract: objective: to develop and implement an interactive tool that provides a virtual experience in the field of neurological semiology and is conducive to achieve deep learning and improvement in the learning process of medicine students at universidad de caldas in 2010. materials and methods: cohort observational analytical research with development of two computing tools: educational blog and cd with audiovisual material. population: 52 medicine students at universidad de caldas who were taking the general semiotics class in the first semester, 2010: 24 men and 28 women ages 18 to 24. thirty students participated in the educational blog and 22 did not. students were evaluated in three moments: at the beginning, in the middle and at the end of the semester. four deep learning categories were evaluated in each moment: analytical ability, richness in technical vocabulary, conceptual competence and problem solving ability. results: most of the students who participated in the blog had dominantly appropriate responses in each of the categories of deep learning. conclusions: the use of a computing tool for neurological semiology teaching and learning proved useful as a facilitator in the acquisition of deep learning. the blog development allowed students to gain confidence at the moment of performing the patients' clinical examination.

On the Consistency of the First-Order-Approach to Principal-Agent Problems  [PDF]

Theoretical Economics Letters (TEL) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/tel.2012.22028
Abstract: This paper revisits the principal-agent model with moral hazard when its solution is obtained invoking the first-order-approach. We show that the solution can be economically inconsistent even when “sufficient conditions” ensuring its validity ([1,2]) hold. To be more precise, we provide examples where is impossible to find Lagrange multipliers validating the approach. The correct solution to the problem provides a rationale for option-like contracts and minimum payments.

Abstract: background: it is not known in our studies that compare metallic stents (sm) and plastic stents (sp) in the management of distal malignant biliary obstruction. patients and methods: retrospective trial of 80 patients treated in hospital pablo tobón uribe and clínica el rosario between january 2002 and june 2008. forty patients received a ps and 40 patients were treated with ms. results. in this study, 48 men (60%) and 32 women (median 66±6 years) with inoperable malignant distal common bile duct strictures were evaluated. clinical success was equal for two groups (92%). hospital stay was significantly smaller for patients with ms than the patients with ps (ci 95% 1.6-7.2, p<0.01) recurrent biliary obstruction was noted in 19 of 40 (47.5%) patients of ps and 27 of 108 (25%) patients of ms. the median first stent patency was longer in the metal group than in the plastic stent group (ci 95% 41.1-90.8, p<0.01). early complications occurred in 5% of ms and 12.5% of patients with ps (p=0.4), later complications were seen in 42.5% of ps and 30% of ms (p=0.3) median survival time after stent insertion was 159.4±9.4 days for ps and 189.5±7.6 days for ms (p=0.07). conclusions. plastic and metal stents are effective in the treatment of inoperable distal malignant obstruction, but compared with plastic stent, metal stents had better permeability, lower hospital stay, lower procedures for complications and equal survival.
R&D Direction and North-South Diffusion, Human Capital, Growth, and Wages
óscar Afonso
Economics Research International , 2011, DOI: 10.1155/2011/401928
Abstract: This paper highlights some recent components related to the endogenous growth literature; in particular, (i) research and development progress, direction, and diffusion; (ii) human-capital accumulation; (iii) wage inequality; (iv) nonscale economic growth, showing how each one has been treated by the existing seminal literature and the expected impact of bringing them together. The connection of the different components is mainly done by involving the leading literature on North-South technological-knowledge diffusion by imitation under trade, and the prevailing literature on intra- and intercountry wage inequality.
Barroco y Modernidad: hacia una ética materialista de la representación (de uno mismo)
Aisthesis , 2011, DOI: 10.4067/S0718-71812011000200006
Abstract: any form of representation implies an attitude, and therefore an ethic, to the exercise of representation. from this perspective, this article explores the relationship between the construction of cultural modernity and baroque imagination. considering the thoughts of a few names of the ?materialist philosophy?, such as nietzsche, benjamin, adorno, lyotard or sloterdijk, literature (juan goyti-solo, miguel romero esteo, mallarmé, elias canetti) and film (jean-luc godard, greenaway), this paper will discuss different ways of understanding and responding to the fact of representation in modernity.
De la función metalingüística al metalenguaje: Los estudios sobre el metalenguaje en la lingüística actual
Revista signos , 2009, DOI: 10.4067/S0718-09342009000300002
Abstract: in this article i will draw a short overview over the metalinguistic facts that form a complement to jakobson's early works. it will deal with the manifestations of the reflexive dimension of language, which a) either 'speak about' language (discourse about language); b) or present distinctions on the 'real' level of language (lexicon, phraseology etc.); c) are pieces of language represented in texts that are spoken about (metalinguistic use); d) or are linguistic signs that in order to be understood completely and explicitly need the 'objectivation of other signs (eco utterances). apart from presenting a typology of the facts, i will propose a functional classification within a 'realistic' language theory.
