Abstract: In this work, we review literature reports on the study of the stringent response in Escherichia coli. Rather than undertaking the development of a highly specialised literature mining approach, we investigate the suitability of concept recognition and statistical analysis of concept occurrence as means to highlight the concepts that are most likely to be biologically engaged during this response. The co-occurrence analysis of core concepts in this stringent response, i.e. the (p)ppGpp nucleotides with gene products was also inspected and suggest that besides the enzymes RelA and SpoT that control the basal levels of (p)ppGpp nucleotides, many other proteins have a key role in this response. Functional enrichment analysis revealed that basic cellular processes such as metabolism, transcriptional and translational regulation are central, but other stress-associated responses might be elicited during the stringent response. In addition, the identification of less annotated concepts revealed that some (p)ppGpp-induced functional activities are still overlooked in most reviews. In this paper we applied a literature mining approach that offers a more comprehensive analysis of the stringent response in E. coli. The compilation of relevant biological entities to this stress response and the assessment of their functional roles provided a more systematic understanding of this cellular response. Overlooked regulatory entities, such as transcriptional regulators, were found to play a role in this stress response. Moreover, the involvement of other stress-associated concepts demonstrates the complexity of this cellular response.Scientific literature represents a valuable source of biological information, in particular on the description of biological entities that we can find in a cellular system and how they are related to each other. To identify references to these entities in texts, here designated as biological concepts, literature mining approaches can be applied. Lately,

Abstract: Here, we present a novel corpus concerning the integrated cellular responses to nutrient starvation in the model-organism Escherichia coli. Our corpus is a unique resource in that it annotates biomedical concepts that play a functional role in expression, regulation and metabolism. Namely, it includes annotations for genetic information carriers (genes and DNA, RNA molecules), proteins (transcription factors, enzymes and transporters), small metabolites, physiological states and laboratory techniques. The corpus consists of 130 full-text papers with a total of 59043 annotations for 3649 different biomedical concepts; the two dominant classes are genes (highest number of unique concepts) and compounds (most frequently annotated concepts), whereas other important cellular concepts such as proteins account for no more than 10% of the annotated concepts. To the best of our knowledge, a corpus that details such a wide range of biological concepts has never been presented to the text mining community. The inter-annotator agreement statistics provide evidence of the importance of a consolidated background when dealing with such complex descriptions, the ambiguities naturally arising from the terminology and their impact for modelling purposes.Availability is granted for the full-text corpora of 130 freely accessible documents, the annotation scheme and the annotation guidelines. Also, we include a corpus of 340 abstracts.Due to its latest achievements, text mining, i.e. the automated extraction of information from electronically published sources, is receiving increasing interest from the scientific community [1-4]. Text mining has been accounted for in the literature curation pipelines of several databases devoted to cellular modelling, namely: Regulon's network of transcriptional regulation in Escherichia coli (E. coli) [5], the Open Regulatory Annotation database (ORegAnno) on cis-regulatory data [6], the KInetic Database (KID) [7] and the BRaunschweig ENzyme Database (B

Abstract: this study investigates the effects of perceived skin colour and of the social success on the whitening and on the infra-humanization. in this sense, white subjects evaluated a group of black people or a group of white people (represented by photographs), which obtained social success or that fail. the design contains two between subject's independent variables (white versus black) and social performance (success versus failure). the results indicate that blacks that obtain social success are perceived as whitener than the blacks that fail. a mediation analysis indicated that as much the blacks with success are whitened, more typically human characteristics are attributed to them. the inverse happens for blacks less whitened. these results are analysed and discussed in according to the theories about racism in brazil and the new expressions of racism.
Estruturas rasas de gás em sedimentos no estuário Potengi (nordeste do Brasil)

Revista Brasileira de Geofísica , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-261X2007000500003
Abstract: areas with gas accumulations and gas seeps, where gas escapes from the river-bottom to the water column, have been mapped in the fill of a fluvial valley, the potengi estuary. the various gas features have been classified into four types according to their specific seismic signatures: (1) acoustic blanket, (2) acoustic curtains, (3) acoustic columns, and (4) acoustic turbidity. at the same time, two types of gas escapes features have been distinguished: (1) acoustic plumes and (2) pockmarks. the neotectonic activity in the semigraben of the potengi river may be one of the responsible factors for the migration of gas coming from the seismofacies located below the present river level where it is possible to recognize the connection with the level of the gas source through the acoustic column type seismic signature. it is concluded that sedimentary facies is the main factor determining whether gas accumulates or seeps, and also determines the specific type of accumulation or seep at each location.

Abstract: Invasive fungal infections have been gaining notoriety due to several factors, mainly their increasing incidence in immunocompromised patients. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the antifungal activity and toxicity of the 3,4,5-trihydroxybenzoic acid (3,4,5-THB) and of its derivative, the 3,4,5-tris(acetyloxy)benzoic acid (3,4,5-TAB). The 3,4,5-THB was purchased and its derivative was obtained by purifying and characterizing performed using semisynthesis reactions (esterification), recrystallization, column chromatography and infrared analytical techniques and nuclear magnetic resonance. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum lethal concentration (MLC) were determined in order to evaluate the antifungal activity of the compounds against four clinical isolates and four standard strains of Candida sp. and five clinical isolates of dermatophytes, following the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute protocols. The toxicity of the compounds was evaluated by determining the lethal dosis (LD50) using lethality assay of Artemia salina. The most sensitive yeasts to the 3,4,5-THB were C. albicans ATCC 10231 and C. krusei ATCC 6258, both presenting a MIC of 128 μg·mL-1. For Trichophyton sp. and Epidermophyton floccosum, the MIC was 32 μg·mL-1. The 3,4,5-TAB showed a lower inhibitory activity against Candida

Abstract: Objective: To describe the appropriateness of referrals of high-risk pregnancies in the basic healthcare network of Sobral, in Ceará, Brazil. Methods: A descriptive quantitative study. The medical files of 173 pregnant patients referred to the high-risk outpatient clinic of Centro de Especialidades Médicas of Sobral, during the period from July 2006 to April 2007, were analyzed. Variables analyzed were correctness of the referrals, professionals who made them, causes and origins of the referrals, and age bracket of the patients referred. The referrals were divided into “appropriate” and “inappropriate”, according to the classification of risk established by the technical manual of the Ministry of Health. Rresults: Of the 173 cases, 102 (59%) were considered appropriate/correct, and 71 (41%) referrals were considered inappropriate/incorrect. The referrals were divided according to the professional class of the referring individuals: physicians or nurses. Of the 173 referrals, 49 (28.3%) were made by physicians, and 124 (71.7%) by nurses. Of the 49 patients referred by physicians, 39 (79.6%) were considered correct. Of the 124 referrals made by nurses, 63 (50.8%) were considered incorrect, revealing a significant difference between the groups (p < 0.00001). The most common causes of referrals of pregnant patients were hypertensive syndromes (23.6%), physiological modifications of pregnancy (22.6%), prolonged pregnancy (15.1%), and diabetes (12.3%). Cconclusions: There was a low rate of appropriate/correct referrals. There is a need for training in the basic healthcare network for quality prenatal care, with special emphasis on referring nurses.
