Do we always need mass spectrometry with gas chromatography?
气相色谱分析中是否一定要用质谱检测器? (英文)

色谱 , 2010,
Abstract: The detector, as well as being an essential supporting device for the gas chromatography (GC) has also played a critical role in the development of the technique as a whole. The mass spectrometer (MS) is still the commonly praised detector as before. In fact, the information of fragmentation patterns is seldom used in practice, and the GC-MS instrument is even more expensive. For today's analytical problems, it seems that element specific detectors can and should be used for many applications rather than GC-MS.
Cutting through the confusion in high performance liquid chromatographic column technology

色谱 , 2011,
Abstract: Column packings continue to evolve as the needs of users for high efficiency, high resolution and highly sensitive high performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) analysis drive further developments. In comparing and contrasting modern HPLC columns technologies, diameters of column packings and particle materials are covered. Some products and applications of modern HPLC columns are provided. Future directions in packing developments are predicted in this introductory article.

An Exploration of the Link between Minority Ethnic and White Students’ Degree Attainment and Views of Their Future ‘Possible Selves’
Jacqueline Stevenson
Higher Education Studies , 2012, DOI: 10.5539/hes.v2n4p103
Abstract: There is a significant gap in degree attainment between White and minority ethnic (ME) students in the UK as measured by the percentage awarded a ‘good’ degree. The causes for the gap are highly complex; however outcomes for ME students are lower than for their White peers across the whole of the UK higher education sector. This paper explores the extent to which students views of what they believe or expect they can become, their academic ‘possible selves’ (Markus and Nurius, 1986), may inform their academic help seeking strategies and their subsequent degree attainment. Drawing on group interviews with seventy full-time, undergraduate White and ME students studying at two UK ‘Russell group’ universities the research finds that a lack of congruence between hoped for, true and ‘ought to’ selves may be informing, and limiting, the academic help-seeking strategies of Black, Asian and Chinese students compared to their White peers.

Swords, Settlement and Sacred Places: The Archaeology of Brisley Farm, Ashford, Kent
Jim Stevenson
Archaeology International , 2012, DOI: 10.5334/ai.1507
Abstract: Archaeology South-East (UCL) has recently completed the post-excavation analysis of the results of the long-term Brisley Farm project, a series of large-scale archaeological investigations carried out in Kent since 1998. This research has revealed significant insights into the development of an ancient landscape located to the south of Ashford, spanning some three millennia. Amongst the most revealing discoveries, which included two ‘warrior burials’, is evidence of how funerary and sacred concerns played a pivotal part in the Late Iron Age and Roman everyday life of the area.
Embedding Hands-On Experience with ERP Systems into University Courses: Aligning Academic and Industry Needs
Mark Stevenson
ITALICS , 2007,
Abstract: Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems are widely used by many of the top recruiters of computer science and business school graduates, providing significant business benefits when implemented effectively. While ERP concepts are taught within Universities from a theoretical point of view, few students have any hands-on experience of using an ERP system when they graduate. As a result, there is a significant gap between the way in which ERP concepts are applied in practice and the way in which they are taught in Universities. This paper describes the adoption of new, innovative material during 2006 which enhances two postgraduate courses taught at a leading UK management school and provides students with hands-on experience with an ERP system. It is argued here that this enhances their student experience, improves their employability and increases their ‘readiness’ for industry, thereby contributing to aligning the objectives of higher education institutions and practitioners. The paper also describes how a number of challenges to incorporating the new material within existing course structures were overcome, providing guidance for fellow academics embarking on similar ventures. Issues discussed include: coping with the uncertainty of new material, maintaining academic integrity and encouraging critical self reflection and learning.
