Abstract:

UV radiation and ozonation were investigated as disinfection alternatives for the wastewater treatment plant. The inactivation of total and fecal coliforms using ozone and ultraviolet radiation as separate treatments was evaluated. Different ozone concentrations (3 to 40 mg O3/L) were applied and UV fluencies ranging from 8.5 to 12 mJ/cm2 at different pH values (from 5 to 9) were tested. Best results were obtained for ozone doses near 20 mg/min with removals of 72% and 78% of fecal and total coliforms, respectively. The ozone also was capable of oxidizing organic matter in the effluent measured as COD (the highest removal obtained was 36% for 20 mg O3/min). Maximum bacterial resistance was observed at pH 7 in both cases. The UV light offered a high bacterial inactivation (over 80%) and the lowest bacterial inactivation was observed at pH 7. Finally, we obtained the electric energy per order (EEO, kWh/m3/order), defined as the electric energy (kW-h) required to degrade a contaminant by one order of magnitude in a unit volume of contaminated water, being noteworthy that EEO values for the UV process resulted were lower than those determined for the process with ozone in all the water flow tested.

Abstract: A review of the literature published on topics interrelated to electrochemical treatment within wastewater by using sacrificial anodes was presented. Electrocoagulation (EC) is a technique used for water and has a great ability on various wastewater treatments, industrial processed water, and medical treatment. It has potential in removing various pollutants such as chemical oxygen demand turbidity, ammonia, color, and suspended solid. One of the most necessities industries is Textile industries which release large volumes of wastewater that contains different dyes. Azo dyes contain strong N = N bond which is not easily broken by conventional methods. The discharge of this type of wastewater to natural watercourse can pose serious environmental impacts to aquatic life. Electrocoagulation (EC) method depends on several factors as electrode material, current density, operation time and PH. The review describes, discusses and compares the types of that electrode influencing the EC process in various wastewater and leachate. Both operating costs and electrical energy consumption values were found to vary greatly depending on the type of electrodes material and solution being treated.

Abstract: Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of extractive or-thopaedic orthodontic treatment in mixed late denti-tion in two female patients presenting Class III mal-occlusion and hyperdivergent facial types due to maxillary retrusion. Materials and Methods: The or- thopaedic phase, carried out using posteroanterior extraoral traction combined with rapid palatal ex-panders, was followed by extraction of four premo-lars and application of bidimensional technique fixed appliances (Boston University). Results: We achieved functional and aesthetic improvement via normalisa-tion of the transversal dimensions and a sagittal in-crease in the maxilla while maintaining vertical sta-bility. The extractions permitted resolution of the crowding problem and normalisation of the overbite and overjet, and Class I molar and canine occlusion was achieved. Conclusions: Timely intervention and exploitation of extractive space to compensate for skeletal alterations using only orthopaedic orthodon-tic treatment can allow achievement of excellent re-sults.

Herein, we review the recently published papers related to TB proteomics from 2010 to 2011, including new technologies used in TB proteome research, diagnosis biomarkers of TB-associated diseases, disease pathogenesis and antigens for drug development. Through this review, we wish to offer some help for TB diagnosis and treatment.

This paper using the theory of agenda setting and constructionist theory of representation assesses the public relations profession in relation to the value, treatment and power accorded to the different gender in the course of their professional duties. It was found out that even though there are fewer men in number, the males have more power than their female counterparts. Also, gender, directly or indirectly influence treatment and value. Abstract: Background: Catheter intervention is occasionally complicated by a pseudoaneurysm at the puncture site. Although the feasibility of echo-guided repair of a pseudoaneurysm has been reported, this method does not always repair the pseudoaneurysm. We hypothesized that if the communication to the artery could be effectively closed by pin-point compression, the clot that forms in the residual lumen would effectively cover the communication. We studied the safety and efficacy of the echo-guided pinpoint compression procedure for repairing a pseudoaneurysm. Methods: Ten consecutive patients with a pseudoaneurysm were enrolled. We determined the site of communication by echography with a high-frequency linear probe. We performed pin-point compression on the communication point with the right index finger, and we confirmed closure of the communication by color Doppler. During compression, we monitored echo images to confirm clot formation. Results: A pseudoaneurysm was located on the femoral artery in 6 patients and on the brachial artery in 4 patients. The sizes of the pseudoaneurysms ranged from 13 to 40 mm in diameter. We successfully closed the communication with one-finger compression in all patients. During the compression, we observed clot formation in the residual lumen of the pseudoaneurysm in all patients by echography. The duration of compression ranged from 5 to 40 minutes (mean, 18 minutes). We succeeded in repairing the pseudoaneurysm in all patients using this method. The success of the procedure was also confirmed 24 hours later in all patients. Conclusions: Echo-guided pin-point compression of the communication might be an effective technique for repairing a pseudoaneurysm at the puncture site, and echography is useful for confirming the success of the procedure.

Abstract: A female infant, named Anum 1.8 kg was born on 9th August 2007 at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) with a big head, Occipitofrontal Circumference (OFC) 36 cm. She was admitted on 29th August 2007 and was discharged on 5th September 2007 from Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre after the management of moderate birth asphyxia. Cranial ultrasound revealed moderate Hydrocephalus (symmetrical) with prominent third ventricle. Treatment and its effectiveness have been discussed.

Abstract: Based on the findings of epidemiological surveys in western countries, the number of person with suspected xerostomia in Japan is estimated to be 30,000,000. Xerostomia is caused by: 1) Systemic diseases; 2) Medications; 3) Tumors or trauma; 4) Radiotherapy; and 5) Neurological factors. Its symptoms can be alleviated, and its progression can be stopped by close cooperation between the dental and medical departments. However, at present, symptomatic treatment methods such as water drinking, oral rinsing with water, and administration of Kampo medicines or parasymptomimetic drugs are mainly used, and a standard treatment has not been established. On the other hand, previous studies on xerostomia have reported improvement in dry mouth symptoms using dental approaches or a relationship between the development of candidiasis and the salivary flow rate. Therefore, in this study, to establish a dental method useful for improving xerostomia associated with systemic diseases and medications for them, we restored occlusal function, and as a result, increased the salivary flow rate, and evaluated changes in oral findings.
Factors Associated with First-Line Antiretroviral Therapy Failure amongst HIV-Infected African Patients: A Case-Control Study  [PDF]

Abstract: Background: Since 2001, anti-retroviral therapy (ART) has been provided to over 75,000 HIV-infected patients at the USAID-Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare (AMPATH) Partnership in western Kenya. Over 1000 of these patients have switched to second-line ART. We therefore set out to determine factors associated with first-line ART failure amongst these patients. Methods: This case controlled study matched patients (in the ratio 1:2) from the electronic AMPATH Medical Record System on the basis of age, gender, and ART initiation date. Cases were adults (≥18 years) who initiated second-line ART between January 1, 2007 and July 31, 2011 after at least one viral load measurement >5000 copies/ml or satisfying the WHO immunological or clinical failure criteria. Controls were those on non-failing first-line ART with a CD4 count > 400 /ml within the last 12 months, at the time of case incidence. Conditional logistic regression for paired data was used to assess association. We evaluated the strength of association of risk factors using stratified Cox model. Results: Of the 1084 cases and 2149 controls included in the analysis, 62% were female. Median age was 36.5 years (IQR = 30.7 - 43.1); median baseline CD4 cell count was 161 /ml (IQR = 72 - 277); Median time to ART failure was 37 months (IQR = 24 - 47). Low baseline CD4 count < 50 /ml (H.R = 7.07, (95% CI = 4.92 - 10.15); Zidovudine based ART (H.R 1.76, 95% CI = 1.25 - 2.48) and imperfect ART adherence (H.R = 2.77, 95% CI = 2.20 - 3.49) were independently associated with treatment failure. Conclusion: In this setting, low baseline CD4 count, zidovudine-based ART and imperfect adherence are associated with first-line ART treatment failure.
