Abstract: this work presents the results from a research whose starting point is the consideration of human developments as a process of territorial nature; the accomplishments of people are determined by the surrounding wherein they commonly live. this states the need to advance in the formulation of theoretical-methodological approaches that include the spatial dimension of development. on this basis, and from corroborating the scarce capacity of hdi-undp to give an account of the unequal distribution of capabilities at sub-national scale in latin american countries, we constructed the new measure, which adjusted to the undp methodology, presents greater territorial sensibility. the exercise of application of the index of territorial human development to argentina and mexico allowed drawing some conclusions on its validity.
Territorialidad y sustentabilidad urbana en la Zona Metropolitana del Valle de México
Torres-Carral, Guillermo;
Economía, sociedad y territorio , 2011,
Abstract: in this article we perform a theoretical-methodological approach to one of the current explanations on sustainable development, specifically urban: the so called territorial approach, taking into account the paradigmatic case of the metropolitan zone of the valley of mexico (mznm). the fundamental aim is to reflect on the analytical-cognitive interconnections that a new sort of development implies and, at the same time, analyze the practical consequences it leads to and to carry out a balance from its contribution and limitations. to do so, we resort to the general study of territorial approach; then, we considered the differences in the rural and urban spheres. hence, only some reflections are formulated in relation to its scope in mznm, and the difficulties that said approach carries, which here we consider insufficient to contribute to urban sustainability.

Abstract: the freedoms that people have are conditioned by the environment in which they operate daily. thus, the territory constitutes itself in the determinant of the space of opportunities from which each individual can choose. this leads to emphasize the importance of examining human capabilities within specific geographic entities. the article goes back to the territorial human development index (tdhi), measure elaborated in order to increase the validity of the hdi-undp to give account of the spatial gaps, at subnational scale, and some modifications are applied in order to have an updated and more rigorous approximation to the human development overview in the argentine provinces. first, the paper describes the methodological adjustments made to thdi. then, the results of its application to the argentine provinces are presented, describing the evolution experienced by human development at two points in time (2004-2008).
