URN: urn:nbn:de:0114-fqs0501383 In this paper, we explore the implications of the use of academic discourse and social theory in a collaborative research process with African-American youth focused on urban science education. While involving students as co-researchers can be a more ethical approach than traditional approaches because of the greater potential for mutual understanding and for empowering participants to work together toward positive change, ethical issues may become even more salient. Specifically, the academic discourse used in the research process can be perceived by youth participants as establishing and reaffirming social boundaries rather than as a language of an open community in which they can participate. Drawing on several incidents from this research project, we argue for a continually reflexive research process in order to insure that research methods do not undermine political and ethical research goals by perpetuating exclusion similar to the kind that students m
The radical potential of student voice: Creating spaces for restless encounters
Michael Fielding
International Journal of Emotional Education , 2010,
Abstract: This paper starts by sketching out some of the developments in research partnerships between adults and young people within the context of formal schooling in the last twenty years and then briefly touches on some of the critiques of such work, underlining the role of values and political perspectives. The third section argues for a particular - person-centred - standpoint resting on a relational, communal view of the self that puts certain kinds of relationships at the heart of education and schooling in general, and student voice partnerships in particular. Finally, the author argues for the importance of creating spaces for restless encounters between adults and young people in which they are able to re-see and re-engage with each other in creative, holistic and potentially transformational ways. In taking this forward, the much neglected and derided radical traditions of state education offer us an important resource.

URN: urn:nbn:de:0114-fqs0503367 This article suggests that qualitative research group dynamics shape university re-searchers' capacities for expertly enacting ethical practices. Specifically, I assert that when research participants become the researchers, both univer-sity-based and community-based members of the research group have opportunities to deeply experi-ence each other's life worlds. By spending time to-gether as researchers, we can then develop ethical expertise that is fluid, unconscious, and implicitly appropriate for the community in which the re-search is being conducted.
Ríos, Guillermo Campos;Daza, Germán Sánchez;Ita, María Eugenia Martínez de;
Avalia??o: Revista da Avalia??o da Educa??o Superior (Campinas) , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1414-40772011000100005
Abstract: this article shows how the labor market of researchers in mexico - characterized by a high level of education - is also ruled by blind institutional structures that, finally, reproduce inequities in a similar way to those which we would encounter in any other workers' segment with a lesser level of education. though, evidently, the intensity of inequities is smaller and in some occasions they turn out to be transfigured. this segment has a growth dynamic that advances in the opposite direction to what happens in the current context of the massive destruction of employment. inequities are orientated towards female and young researchers and, although we can find exceptional working conditions with regard to other segments, these conditions are extraordinarily fragile. the main obstacle to the absolute and rational growth of the activity of research in mexico - leaving the persistently low investment in r+d of the mexican government - is the concentration of the research in the f.d. and in three institutions: the unam, the uam and the politechnical institute (ipn). we conclude with the need to go on to the second phase of institutionalization of research in mexico.

Abstract: this article aims to analyse why researchers trained abroad return to and how they reintegrate in semi-peripheral countries, based on research carried out in portugal. quantitative data on return flows and reintegration modalities is presented alongside qualitative information, based on interviews, addressing motivations, career trajectories and the impact of mobility in scientific work. it has been ascertained that, though the amount of returns is significant and the ability to reintegrate in the scientific system is fairly common, difficulties do exist. two types of returnee researchers are identified, corresponding to different career situations and different hurdles in pursuing scientific activities. finally, the positive effects of mobility in scientific practice and in the development of the r&d system are discussed, together with the barriers to its comprehensive fulfilment.

Abstract: No aspect of the research plan is more critical for assuring the usefulness of a study than the sampling strategy. It will determine if the results of the study can be applied as evidence and contributes to the trustworthiness of the results. The sampling strategy is a critical part of research design. An appropriate sampling plan is vital for drawing the right conclusions from a study. Good sampling is critical for the confident application of the study findings to other people, settings, or time periods.
Researchers at the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (IMI-BAS) - Attestation Analysis - Results and Recommendations

Abstract: In 2010 attestation of the academic staff of the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, was carried out. The attestation procedures and the results of their applying in practice are both described in the present paper. The level-drop in IMI-BAS is alarming. The main reason for it is the brain-drain, we suppose.
