Abstract: The searching of parking burns a lot of barrels of the world’s oil every day. Car parking problem is a major contributor in congestion of traffic and has been, still a major problem with increasing vehicle size in the luxurious segment and also confines parking spaces in urban cities. The rapid growth in the number of vehicles worldwide is intensifying the problem of the lack of parking space. As the global population continues to urbanize, without a well-planned, convenience-driven retreat from the car, these problems will worsen in many countries. The current unmanaged car parks and transportation facilities make it difficult to accommodate the increasing number of vehicles in a proper, convenient manner so it is necessary to have an efficient and smart parking system. Smart parking management systems are capable of providing extreme level of convenience to the drivers. In this paper, a proposed web App system, named “Park Easy” is based on the usage of smart phones, sensors monitoring techniques with a camera which is used as a sensor to take photos to show the occupancy of cars parks. By implementing this system, the utilization of parking spaces will increase. It allocates available parking space to a given driver to park their vehicle, renew the availability of the parking space when the car leaves and compute the charges due. Smart parking App, “Park Easy”, will also enable most important techniques to provide all the possible shortage route for parking from any area of the city mainly, it helps to predict accurately and sense spot/vehicle occupancy in real-time.
Smart Parking System using Image Processing Techniques in Wireless Sensor Network Environment

Abstract: This study aims to improve parking facilities by the introduction of a new Smart Parking Systems that would reduce empty parking space searching time. Most of the recent parking technologies relies on intrusive sensor to detect empty parking space and did not specifically guide patrons to specific parking lot. Therefore, the author proposed the implementation of Smart Parking System using image processing technique, Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) and shortest path algorithm in order to help patrons in finding vacant parking space. The pre existing security surveillance (CCTVs) will be used as a sensing nodes to identify vacant parking space. The captured image will be processed through the RabbitCore Microcontroller and the processed data will be transmitted via ZigBee to a central computer to store and update the occupancy status of available parking space vacancies in the database. The system will automatically assigned a space to patrons using A-Star (A*) shortest path algorithm based on the point of nearest entrance of the building. The patron will be guided to the specified location by referring to variable massage sign and the map printed on the parking ticket. RFID technology will also be used to uniquely tag the reserved ID to the database. The information on the ID will be used to remind patrons of their parking location during payment upon leaving.
Competent Smart Car Parking: An OSGi Approach

Abstract: In cosmopolitan expanses, parking of vehicles has become a major problem as it is becoming unproductive. It is also one of the key causes of city traffic congestion. A mechanism is needed to monitor the parking area. Other associated issues such as lighting of large parking lots and tracking availability of parking spots need to be addressed. The proposed study discussed these issues and gave a solution by employing Open Source Gate Initiative (OSGi), a middleware that helps in efficient communication. The parking system discussed here integrates various communication standards such as the SMS features of a standardized mobile, ZigBee enabled proximity sensors and a system meant for storage and processing of the data. The proposed architecture eliminates the hassles of searching empty parking spots and thus can save a lot of time on a daily basis for the general public who own and use a vehicle for commuting. The merits of this study compared with the existing models are emphasized here. This study also highlighted the advantages of using a standardized middleware such as OSGi for the communication between sensors and a system meant for the storage and processing of the obtained data.
Car Park System: A Review of Smart Parking System and its Technology

Abstract: Due to the proliferation in the number of vehicles on the road, traffic problems are bound to exist. This is due to the fact that the current transportation infrastructure and car park facility developed are unable to cope with the influx of vehicles on the road. To alleviate the aforementioned problems, the smart parking system has been developed. With the implementation of the smart parking system, patrons can easily locate and secure a vacant parking space at any car park deemed convenient to them. Vehicle ingress and egress are also made more convenient with the implementation of hassle free payment mechanism. With vehicle detection sensors aplenty on the market, the choices made may defer due to the different requirements in addition to the its pros and cons. Subsequently, the various sensor systems used in developing the systems in addition to the recent research and commercial system on the market are examined as vehicle detection plays a crucial role in the smart parking system.
Parking Guidance System Utilizing Wireless Sensor Network and Ultrasonic Sensor

Abstract: This study introduces a new approach of parking system by using Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) technology equipped with ultrasonic sensors. The system also implements shortest path algorithm to calculate the shortest distance from the parking berth to the nearest preferred entrance. The system operates by monitoring the availability of the vehicle berth and making the information collected available for patrons and car-park operator. The information gained from the detection sensor and calculation from the shortest path algorithm is used to guide patrons to parking berth. The car-park operators use the sensors’ information to aid in overall management and planning. WSN is chosen since it enables reliable information gathering and measurement to be transmitted through wireless channel without having to install new cabling for network and electricity to reach each sensing device.

Abstract: Parking spaces play a vital role in the transportation system. Parking policies ensure the efficient of the transportation system and the management of traffic demand. Illegal parking practice can hamper sustainability of transportation system. This paper attempts to analyze the illegal parking behavior in Jeddah city, Saudi Arabia. Car parking in the city of Jeddah is largely uncontrolled and there is a lack of management of the public parking supply and controlled parking system. Parking survey at five main locations (roads) at Jeddah city was conducted. Legal and illegal parking were observed at the five roads. The observations were distributed over three time periods: 7:00-9:00 am period (morning peak), 12:00-15:00 pm period (afternoon peak) and 18:00-21:00 pm period (evening peak). The observations were collected, studied and compared for weekdays and weekend. Results indicate that illegal parking seems to be common in Jeddah city both on weekdays and weekend hampering the sustainability of transportation system. It is crucial for Jeddah city to deploy stringent parking policies in order to reduce the consequences of illegal parking behavior and to achieve sustainability in transportation.
The Application of Access Management in Commercial Area  [PDF]

With the rapid development of automobile ownership and roadway network in China, there is more and more travel demand in the city of Beijing, China. Large commercial areas attract high volumes of traffic, which greatly impacts traffic movement on roadways, producing congestion and safety problems. What is more serious is that existing design of the parking lot, the location of access, layout of driveway, and passage of circulation are not desirable, causing potential conflicts and traffic delays. This paper mainly investigates the impact of the existing design of parking lot and layout of access and driveways at commercial areas around intersection in Beijing. The overall goal of this study is to use access management technologies to find out the measures for commercial area to improve roadway safety and operational efficiency. Some measures of improvements are proposed based on the analysis, including addition of right turn lanes, increase of driveway throat length and incorporation of traffic signs to guide on-site circulation. To accomplish the study objective, a total of 10 commercial areas around intersection were selected and some necessary data were collected at access points including traffic volume of each access and the frontage roadways during peak hours, access type, location, and spacing. The field investigations were conducted for 2 weekends for each area. Meanwhile, the peak hours were 10:00 to 12:00 a.m. on weekends. The data from field investigations show that the number and location of the access is different from place to place. Access driveway is closely located at the signalized intersection mostly. Other problems are also observed based on field investigation such as shortage of the access spacing. The result of this study can be a reference for traffic management on other similar areas in Beijing.
Vibrating Drivers for Transportation  [PDF]

The movement of objects by means of vibrations is a widely known idea, used for bodies transportation in automated industry based on vibrating bases, on which the transported elements are placed. We consider an inversed idea: vibration is applied to the movable element. Surface, on which this displacement must be realized, is unmovable. The asymmetry of the friction forces in the different phases of the vibration is the cause of motion in this case. A distinctive feature of the proposed device is a slope of the plane of vibration of the inertial mass, which leads to increasing of the asymmetry of friction. In this paper, we consider an example of application of the device to the lateral vehicle parking. The idea is numerically estimated and tested with a laboratory prototype. The movement along a straight line of the trolley with sloped vibrating mechanism under influence of asymmetric friction forces has been estimated and practically simulated with the laboratory prototype.

Intelligent Parking Management System Based on Image Processing  [PDF]

Abstract: This paper aims to present an intelligent system for parking space detection based on image processing technique. The proposed system captures and processes the rounded image drawn at parking lot and produces the information of the empty car parking spaces. In this work, a camera is used as a sensor to take photos to show the occupancy of car parks. The reason why a camera is used is because with an image it can detect the presence of many cars at once. Also, the camera can be easily moved to detect different car parking lots. By having this image, the particular car parks vacant can be known and then the processed information was used to guide a driver to an available car park rather than wasting time to find one. The proposed system has been developed in both software and hardware platform. An automatic parking system is used to make the whole process of parking cars more efficient and less complex for both drivers and administrators.
