Bhokonok, Oleg;Prado, Renato Luiz;Diogo, Liliana Alcazar;
Revista Brasileira de Geofísica , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-261X2006000100006
Abstract: pseudo walkaway noise tests were accomplished in study area in s?o paulo city, brazil, in order to evaluate the potentiality of seismic reflection technique in shallow geological/geotechnical investigation in urban environment, where there is usually the presence of different types as well as intensities of noises and the paved surface. data acquisition was conducted with a 24 channel seismograph with 24 bit a/d converter, 28 hz and 100 hz geophones, as well as sledge hammer and seismic rifle as sources. the best results were obtained with: (i) 100 hz geophones with 0.18 m spike and hammer source with steel plate; (ii) 100 hz geophones coupled through clay on asphaltic coverage with hammer source applied on asphalt. laboratory tests were also accomplished in shake table in order to evaluate geophone responses when they were coupled with different types of clay. tests indicated clay employment is a good alternative to couple geophones, notwithstanding kaolinitic clays are less indicated.
The use of shallow seismic reflection technique in near surface exploration of urban sites: an evaluation in the city of S?o Paulo, Brazil
Prado, Renato L.;Malagutti Filho, Walter;Dourado, Jo?o C.;
Revista Brasileira de Geofísica , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-261X2001000300005
Abstract: in order to evaluate the use of shallow seismic technique to delineate geological and geotechnical features up to 40 meters depth in noisy urban areas covered with asphalt pavement, five survey lines were conducted in the metropolitan area of s?o paulo city. the data were acquired using a 24-bit, 24-channel seismograph, 30 and 100 hz geophones and a sledgehammer-plate system as seismic source. seismic reflection data were recorded using a cmp (common mid point) acquisition method. the processing routine consisted of: prestack band-pass filtering (90-250 hz); automatic gain control (agc); muting (digital zeroin) of dead/noisy traces, ground roll, air-wave and refracted-wave; cmp sorting; velocity analyses; normal move-out corrections; residual static corrections; f-k filtering; cmp stacking. the near surface is geologically characterized by unconsolidated "fill" materials and quaternary sediments with organic material overlying tertiary sediments with the water table 2 to 5 m below the surface. the basement is composed of granite and gneiss. reflections were observed from 40 milliseconds to 65 ms two-way traveltime and were related to the silt clay layer and fine sand layer contact of the tertiary sediments and to the weathered basement. the cmp seismic-reflection technique has been shown to be useful for mapping the sedimentary layers and the bedrock of the s?o paulo sedimentary basin for the purposes of shallow investigations related to engineering problems. in spite of the strong cultural noise observed in these urban areas and problems with planting geophones we verified that, with the proper equipment, field parameters and particularly great care in data collection and processing, we can overcome the adverse field conditions and to image reflections from layers as shallow as 20 meters.
Da fantasia à História: folheando páginas revisteiras
Martins, Ana Luiza;
História (S?o Paulo) , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-90742003000100003
Abstract: this article deals with the use of magazines as sources of history, trying to point out its characteristics as a multiple document serving to recover history, also stressing the need of a preliminary, exhaustive critical evaluation, due to the mercantile and/or ideological nature of these publications. concomitantly, the paper reveals two aspects that deserve an accurate study involving the magazines: the target reading population, which defines its editorial line, and the illustrations, important part of its core, not forgetting to mention the specific sections that complete the publications. the examples studied are magazines issued in s?o paulo city, within the period 1890/1920.
áreas centrais de S?o Paulo: dinamismo econ?mico, pobreza e políticas
Kowarick, Lúcio;
Lua Nova: Revista de Cultura e Política , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-64452007000100008
Abstract: the article analyses the conditions of living in the slum tenements of the central areas of s?o paulo. it points out the changes that have occured in these areas: lost of population, financial sector and higher classes, commercial activities going to other areas. however, the article also points out its potenciality. its main contribution is the investigation of two slum tenements: the general conditions are promiscuity, absence of hygiene and privacy. the last section shows that the central areas have turned into spaces of debates and conflicts concerning the poor population and the public investments.

EURE (Santiago) , 2007, DOI: 10.4067/S0250-71612007000100002
Abstract: the aim of the paper is to analyze the economic performance of the metropolitan region of s?o paulo (mrsp) and its relative importance in the national and international contexts. in the first part, we discuss economic and demographic growth differences between the main brazilian metropolitan areas, as well as the differences between the internal dynamics of the sub-regions that form the mrsp. in the second part, we analyze the structural changes of the mrsp, the nature of their crises and their productive restructuring. in the third part, we evaluate the position and role of the mrsp in the international and inter-regional division of labor. the last part discusses the urban and economic integration between the mrsp and four neighboring urban industrial areas, formed by campinas, s?o josé dos campos, sorocaba and santos and the possibility that they come to constitute a city-region, with strong polarization forces

Bernardes da Silva,Adriana; Castillo,Ricardo;
EURE (Santiago) , 2007, DOI: 10.4067/S0250-71612007000100003
Abstract: we propose to discuss a distinguishing element of the metropolis in the present period: the real estate promotion for companies and their implications for the planning and the urban life, trying to consider the metropolis like a space that shelters a multiplicity of interests and conflicts. our approach is centered in the city of s?o paulo, host municipality of the greater metropolitan region of brazil, doing to emphasize the characteristics that also share with other metropolis of peripheral countries and their specificities
Assimetria e descompasso: as condi??es sociais na metrópole de S?o Paulo na década de 1990
Marques, Eduardo;Gon?alves, Renata;Saraiva, Camila;
Novos Estudos - CEBRAP , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-33002005000300007
Abstract: this article discusses the transformations that occurred through the 1990?s in the social conditions at the s?o paulo metropolis as a whole and at its different spaces. although that decade had negative economic results, indicators of several social dimensions suggest an improvement on the average material conditions for the major part of the city. however, our results also point out to the maintenance of the pre-existent spatial inequalities, as well as for an apparent rise of the income inequalities. our main goal is to present and discuss evidences of these processes, dialoguing with the academic debates about social conditions in the city.
Afinal, a desconcentra??o produtiva é ou n?o relevante? A cidade de S?o Paulo no olho do furac?o
Torres, Haroldo da Gama;
Novos Estudos - CEBRAP , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-33002012000300003
Abstract: the article draws attention to the social impacts of economic deconcentration from the capital of the state of s?o paulo towards its interior. the beneficial impacts identified by the specialized literature notwithstanding, intermunicipal fiscal war has diminished the city's capacity for economic growth and job creation, both in the industrial and the service sectors.
Construindo imagens, fazendo clichês: fotógrafos pela cidade
Rezende, Eliana Almeida de Souza;
Anais do Museu Paulista: História e Cultura Material , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-47142007000100003
Abstract: this paper is based on the analysis of two photographic collections taken as documentary assemblages and marked by a crisscross of intertwined themes. the research presented here is not intended as a sum of the different images or a segmentation of such images by producer; in fact, it is meant to be a discourse about the city, where every image dialogs with every other picture about the same theme. the dialog between the various images revolves around the topic of sanitation, and it is intended as a contribution to our understanding of the theme from one perspective, among so many other possible ways of looking at the city.
Uma ponte para a especula??o: ou a arte da renda na montagem de uma "cidade global"
Fix, Mariana;
Caderno CRH , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-49792009000100003
Abstract: this paper analyzes the conflicts and articulations behind the transformation of an old swampish area, the meadows of the pinheiros river, in one of the most valued regions of s?o paulo and its globalized face. the text discusses particularly the connections made in the last decades between the global financialization of the economy and the specific arrangements that take place in s?o paulo; among supposedly advanced mechanisms - such as urban operations, cepacs and real estate investment funds - and typical forms of primitive accumulation, in which strength, frauds, oppression and pillage are recurrently exhibited; between the "city proper" of the elites and the so-called clandestine city, that occupies stream edges, hillsides, margins of dams. i investigate three icons of that urban landscape: a cable-supported bridge, synthesis of the "new city" scenery; a gigantic walled development, that mixes residential, luxury trade and office buildings; and a business compound with office and hotel towers, interlinked by an underground shopping center.
