Abstract: domestic architecture achieves a great impulse in the second half of xixth-century. from europe to the whole world, models are conformed to the new social order and spread as industrialization takes command. dwelling becomes the main concern among architects. new concepts are developed for the ideal house for 011 social strata: working class, middle-class, bourgeoisie. this essay traces the introduction in s?o paulo of european formal patterns and principies ihygiene, salubrity, comfort, social and domestic rites, social visibility) through the activity of f. p. ramos de azevedo! 1851-19281. the main projects he conceived for the local bourgeoisie are analysed.

Abstract: this article proposes a rereading of a reference work in the history of the brazilian education published in 1942 - the brazilian culture. this work was a result of the goverment?s requests to fernando de azevedo to write the "introduction" to the general census of 1940. this study intends to understand how one historic agent and a specific work have built a conception of the intelectuals and education?s role in the constitution of the brazilian public space. observing the way the concepts of civilization and culture, science and education are articulated, it was possible to establish some connections between a conception of culture and the building of a version of the history of the brazilian education.

Abstract: his interpretation of “Ideias íntimas”, a poem from the book Lira dos vinte anos, from álvares de Azevedo, proposes to investigate the elements that give a dramatic course to the text, considering the well-known approximation of the poet to the preface Do grotesco e do sublime, from Victor Hugo, which debates, besides aesthetic categories, the ideal dramatic conception from the romantic point of view, besides the pathos present in the poem and the movement of the character by the house and his feelings for objects. Based on Cilaine Alves’ interpretation which considers the poem as a “miscellaneous poem”, a mixture of literary styles, and on Camilo’s interpretation which considers the text as meditative, our interpretation considers the poem as a revision of many poetic postures and the search of the poet for a unique posture which legitimates the poetry in the XIX century, configuring, in this way, a short “drama”.

Abstract: the article analyses the book japan by aluísio de azevedo, who was brazils vice-consul in yokohama, between 1887 and 1889. it tries to insert the author's opinions and the fascination he seems to have for the emperor in the complex context of japonization-process which ran throughout japan at the end of the 80ies of the last century. talking into account that the country of that time is immersed in a debate which opposes modernization to tradition inside the parameters of an exalted nationalism, the aim here is to investigate the fundaments of a perspective suggested by an author characterized by his brasility and by an idyllic perception of japanese isolationism, a measure of purity in relation to europe. the analysis emphasizes the oscillation between a look which tends to see the orient as a homogeneous block contrasting with the occident as well as the national question, which precisely is the assertion of a specificity.

Abstract: this paper studies the proposals concerning brazilian education made by fernando de azevedo in his first intellectual work, a poesia do corpo (the poetry of the body), written in 1915. this author presented his text in 1916 in the form of a dissertation for the competitive examination for the title of professor at the chair of ginástica e educa??o física (gymnastics and physical education) of the ginásio mineiro. avoiding any kind of determinism, the text strives to verify the presence of "trends and conflicts" that may have marked his future intellectual production. it explores more specifically how the theme of the "lowering of the moral level" in brazil emerges in fernando de azevedo and other intellectuals of his time, such as olavo bilac, coelho neto, euclides da cunha and monteiro lobato.

Abstract: this paper focuses the historiography of the brazilian educational movement between 1920 and 1930, especially in studies about of the reform fernando de azevedo from rio de janeiro city. the first point discussed is the relevance and applicability of the idea of modernity to definite the period. it suggests that this idea was marked by the transformation in the educational movement historiography. the second point refers to the meaning of the idea of modernity to the organization of the interpretation about the educational movement from brazil. finally, the text examines the major change in historiographical sensibility of the studies about the reform fernando de azevedo.

Abstract: this article centers itself in the inheritance of milit?o augusto de azevedo (1837-1905) with the objective of investigate the different ways he represented the modernization process in the last decades of the 19th century in brazil and especially in the city of s?o paulo. the milit?o's documents analysis - photographs, letters and a índice das fotografias de antigos paulistas - configures a multiplicity of meanings about the transformations occurred in the s?o paulo city since 1860, and in the brazilian politics after the republic's proclamation. the character's comments about his changing world asseverate that, less than directly related to the "progress", the photographer's representations form an amalgam of mismatched temporalities, which imbricate and tension themselves.

Abstract: the first photographs of s?o paulo, taken by milit?o augusto de azevedo between 1862 and 1863, are always cited as documentary evidence of the city's backwardness, deterioration, and lethargy in the mid 19th century. however, our view is that things were quite different, based on a reading of prime sources dating back to that period. in fact, the architecture and urban spaces of s?o paulo already showed clear signs of modernization between the years 1850 and 1860, as depicted in azevedo's photographs, which belong to the collection of paulista museum and also of the iconography and museums division of the s?o paulo heritage department.
